Day 35 we hiked 15.8 miles descending almost 6,000 feet into Nankoweap Canyon. The hike down Nakoweap trail was amazing and crazy! The route contours around the upper most cliffs as it slowly descended to the bottom of the canyon. Some of the exposure had my nerves shot by the bottom. In the desert of La Guajira, Colombia, it doesn’t rain much, but when it rains, the dirt roads turn into mud. Even people on motorcycles rode through the mud, but barefoot (2). Our truck had only rear-wheel drive, so it occasionally got stuck (3). If you pushed from behind, you had to be careful not to get bombarded with mud (4). Some people came to help, others came to laugh at their friend, our truck driver (5). Only after seeing the pictures, I realize that one of them is wearing sports pants of the Dutch football club “PSV”. What a coincidence! Later the truck broke down, so it had to be repaired (6). SandRaiders 2024: la seconda tappa è stata molto faticosa per il nostro Matteo, prima gli si è spezzato il codino della sua Honda 750 Africa Twin che prontamente ha provveduto a eliminare per proseguire la tappa, ovviamente Matteo che ha restaurato personalmente la sua moto, la conosce come le sue tasche, problema risolto e ripartenza ma… non è finita qui, intorno alle 17 si è guastata la pompa della benzina. Moto ferma e richiesta soccorsi sopraggiunti verso le 20 con benzina, riempito il serbatoio, sopperito al problema pompa la benzina è tornata a fornire il suo apporto al motore per caduta. Risultato, arrivo al campo della seconda tappa alle 22,30, passando le ultime ore al tramonto nel deserto, “un’esperienza che non dimenticherò mai più ”.
