Chasing Goth Sun (Total Solar Eclipse 2024) Bloomington, IN 3rd of 3 tile spread I learned who my people were and who mattered the most that ended up being there for me even for being last minute so thank you @chancesprague, @noyzirra, my brother & @mollieyaj for making this such a memorable experience. I got to see my nieces but too bad I didn't get to see my nephew who was off to college so we just need to do a proper, planned visit next time. I was happy to have shared this trip with our son, Isaac, too who did mostly well throughout the trip. He didn't want to sleep outside of his bed for the first couple nights, but realized he will have to sleep at some point haha... Chasing Goth Sun (Total Solar Eclipse 2024) Bloomington, IN 2nd of 3 tile spread This was a journey of a lifetime, though completely last minute with next to nothing planning haha... we had quite a few hiccups getting there, but coming back was a lot easier. We had so much driving to do scaling across 3/4 of United States crossing all 4 time zones. If we had more time, we would've wanted to go all the way into the east coast, that would've been a dream come true and still plan to do that one day. In the meantime, we only had 3 days to get from CA to IN and somehow we managed to do it through snow storms, wind storms, highway closures with new detour route into a new state, even losing my phone in a panic, more snow + wind storms, dust storms, and possible flooding. With all this in mind, it was still not guaranteed that the eclipse would be visible hiding behind stormy clouds which is why we changed last minute to not go to TX, even though TX still ended up working out for the most part and that's great for everyone in TX. This wasn't just a journey across states, but it was a huge personal journey for me too. I learned that I can do a lot of things on my own, but I would've never ever been able to have done this without @chancesprague. We really did make a good team, even though there were moments where we were not at our best especially when I lost my phone and I was in utter panic. I didn't actually lose it, more like I stupidly misplaced it. But he held it together and stayed my rock. We did have to do a lot of problem solving on the fly and survived haha... Of all my eclipse photos, and I had many, this one I'm most proud of for some reason haha... the original photo was basically shrouded in clouds and was brighter since it was taken right after the eclipse was done. But when I went to turn down the exposure, I saw this little gem hiding behind all those clouds and light pollution. Never would've thought I'd find a diamond ring shot. I was ecstatic! Canyonlands National Park We saw quite a bit of wild animals during our trip, but I wanted so badly to see a baby bison at Yellowstone and name it Tyson! Unfortunately, no baby bison yet and only saw maybe a couple adolescent ones hanging around the herd of females. These bison will get all up on the road and take their sweet time moving hahaha... I loved it! I also thought bison were much bigger in person, but they are not. Maybe even slightly smaller than cows? Elks are ginormous though! I always knew elks and moose were huge. The raven had zero fear of humans and while I was taking a photo of it then placed Apex kind of near it, it started hopping to me and I was like whoaaaaaa... what are we doing here?! So what are we now? haha... It probably thought I laid out food for it. The ravens at Yosemite were also fearless and would follow us or get super close too. It was kind of a joke that Chance would spot vultures, that I don't think are. So any bird or animal I saw around, I would ask him if it were a vulture hahaha... Chasing Goth Sun - Arizona I will always love driving through Arizona and its red deserts. We wanted to drive through Monument Valley on our way from Utah, but we were too late because of being held up at Arches National Park having to wait 3 hours to enter the park. We were still in Utah when the sun was setting so we knew it would be too dark. We got to see Sunset Volcanic Crater from a distance. It would've cost $25 to get in to see it up close? That's like almost National Park price! Though we were not sure if you can actually hike up to the crater or anything, but if that's the case, then yeah, I would've paid if we had the time to do it. Goth Sun - Canyonlands National Park, UT This was a very impressive canyon terrain. For some reason, I thought it would be similar to the Grand Canyon, but it's totally not. This canyon wasteland stretches on along the horizon end to end. It's insane! I could not capture on photograph its sheer vastness and depth. I went through so many photos and most of them just didn't do it justice. Chance found this place to be more impressive than the Grand Canyon and he was really impressed with the Grand Canyon the last time we went. You have to do the road up to Needle Lookout to be on top of the canyon in order to see the vastness and depth. It's worth the long drive and almost felt like we were going nowhere haha.. But stick to it and the road will end at the lookout point. We were surprised to see how empty it was there, a true hidden gem. Goth Sun - Arches National Park, UT We learned that in order to enter the park between the hours of 7 AM to 4 PM, you need to have reservations for a time slot for entry. We didn't know that prior to going there. The park is so small that they can only have a small amount of people there at a time. Because of this, we had to come back after 4 PM which gave us an even smaller window of time to visit. We were not able to hike to any of the arches unless they were close to the road. But still, I have always wanted to come here so I had to at least try to drive through park, which took only 45 minutes to get to other end from the entrance. We did some side road stops to take some photos, but that was the most we can do. Just means we will need to come back! Chasing Goth Sun - Mill Canyon Dinosaur Track, UT My inner child was jumping for joy when I learned that you can visit dinosaur footprints in the Moab area in Utah. I found 3 different locations and because we were short on time, I chose the easiest, closest one we can visit. It's a pretty big area with so many markings and you do have to try to spot the footprints, but there were several on this site. The easiest ones to find were the 3 toed footprints. I saw the blue colored stones and even pocketed a small piece for myself. Looks to be some type of clay? That's probably why the markings and footprints were so well preserved after millions of years. A side note, they had a dinosaur bone trail there too that I didn't know. Totally missed the opportunity to see bones embedded in rocks! That would've been so neat to see. Next time! Chasing Goth Sun - Meteor Crater, AZ Happy birthday to my dearest @chancesprague!! I was saving the meteor photos to post last, but nah... it's too perfect for Chance's birthday. We've had many adventures together for like 2 decades now since we became friends from the beginning. But we've always shared our love for space. Here's to more adventures to come... The way they nerd up the Meteor Crater was so cute. On the exit to the crater, there is a gas station that looks like a planetarium dome (last slide). Then there are mile markers up until you get to the crater with fun facts about space to kind of hype you up. The visitor's center is expensive to get in, like $29 each adult, but it was the nicest visitor's center I've ever visited and believe me, I've visited many across the globe. Plus it's a freaking meteor crater! I would've paid doubled that hahaha... It was very surreal and inspiring. How can something so destructive leave such an extraordinary beauty mark forever scarring the Earth? It's poetic, really. Idaho We unlocked many new states in this trip including Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado, Missouri, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois (for Chance and Isaac), and Indiana. Goth Sun - Yellowstone National Park, WY Yellowstone has always been on the top of my bucket list since I was young and impressionable. The first time I saw a photo of the Grand Prismatic Spring, I thought no way! That's gotta be fake, right? It is not, it is very real. I had to see it for myself one day. Well, that day still has not come haha... most of the park was still closed for their Winter season. We were only able to drive through 53 miles of the park. So we made the best of it. There was only one hot spring area that was open by the visitor's center. We walked that whole maze pathway and I was so blown away. This is just a morsel, imagine the rest of the park with the more extravagant hot springs?! The park is so huge I would need to spend at least a week or 2 in order to taste every fruit Yellowstone has to offer. So for anyone wanting to visit Yellowstone, do not visit it until after mid-May when everything is open. The road to the Grand Prismatic Spring was literally opening exactly 1 week later... We were only 1 week too early! Again, this trip was planned last minute so we didn't do the proper research. It is my next goal to visit here for a week and stay in one of the cabins inside the park. Though I would love to stay at that cottage we rented this time in Gardener. Gorgeous! Chasing Goth Sun - Devils Tower, WY You know how I've been trying to visit Devils Postpile here in the Sierras since like 2020, but the road to it has been closed for construction and finally opened a few months ago. Well, it was because of Devils Tower why I was so fascinated with Devils Postpile thinking I had a much better chance seeing something similar locally. Here we are. How is it that I get to see Devils Tower before Devils Postpile? Now I feel like Devils Postpile will be a disappointment haha... I've always been fascinated with Devils Tower since the movie and I stand corrected, it truly is a marvel to see in person. Trying to photograph this was the reason I dropped Apex. I tried to get a shot of Apex in the foreground of the tower from the top of my car. Between switching lenses, I forgot Apex was still on top of my car. We drove off and heard some thumps and my heart sank. Long story short, found some epoxy at the gas station for truckers and mended him that night. Apex is whole again with some battle scars haha... Fun fact: the columns are made of phonolite porphyry containing white feldspar crystals. Chasing Goth Sun - Mount Rushmore, SD I've always wanted to see Mount Rushmore being a portrait artist, I wanted to see the carved faces in person. To be honest, it's smaller than I thought. Not to minimize its size and how difficult it would have been to create, but I don't know why I thought it was going to be super massive like you can see it from dozens of miles away haha... They had a helicopter drill while we were there so that was kind of cool to watch. In today's age, it would have been devastatingly abhorrent to ever deface a mountain hahaha... Chasing Goth Sun - Utah Utah is one of my most favorite states to visit. It is such a gorgeous state between the mountains/mesas, canyons, lakes, and deserts. There's a reason why they have 1 less national park than Cali (state housing the most national parks) even though it is a much smaller state. Chasing Goth Sun - Illinois I had been to Illinois, specifically Chicago, many moons ago in the dead of winter. This Cali valley girl did not bode well in negative degree weather at all haha... but I remember how much I enjoyed it. I thought Chance would enjoy it too and at first he said to just drive by. Last minute decided to just stay one night there. I'm glad we did because my boys did enjoy the short time we spent there. Though driving there was a nightmare and we're used to aggressive driving in SF or LA, but it was how much you had to leap frog between lanes because there were multiple exits going on at once haha... Then driving under the buildings were wild too! Though it is smart by utilizing space vertically for saving space, but that could never happen in Cali with earthquakes and all. I wanted to see the Bean, Cloud Gate, but it was fenced off for maintenance. I even stood on a pillar to get a better view and got yelled at by one of the park staff haha... Next time! Chasing Goth Sun - The Kids I was so happy I was able to do a quick visit with my brother's family--Dennis and @mollieyaj, and the bestie's family-- @noyzirra! Both happened to live just 20 minutes of each other on the other side of Minneapolis haha... I miss my nephew and nieces dearly! I was so bummed we didn't get to see Zander, but got a little time with Ivy and Aylah. We've always had boys in the family. Chance's side has 5 boys and no girls so Isaac grew up with male cousins. So for my brother to have 1 boy and 2 girls, it's a real treat and blessing. Of course, there's the cutest, little red haired, Lao boy-- Elliot. Isaac and Elliot hit it off! Chance told me if Isaac starts acting up, usually within a couple hours of any home visit, he would be happy to take Isaac back to the hotel and let me hang out with Noy a little longer and pick me up later. But it was the exact opposite, we had to drag Isaac out of her house! He was so angry with us even the next morning he was still pouty! Warmed my heart and broke it at the same time. He also has a great connection with his cousins too so it just means we need to do a proper, long visit next time in the Midwest. I didn't even get to visit @jmw1001 and @macaron_dy!! I've always wanted to do a Yooperlite night tour at the Great Lakes and House on the Rock in Wisconsin too. But I'm grateful to have spent just that little time though, so much love for my people in Minnesota. So how do you pronounce Terre Haute? The city in Indiana where I met up at the park with Noy haha... it's a beautiful town and looks upscale? I guess if you can't pronounce it, you can't afford it haha... Chasing Goth Sun - Great Salt Lake, UT Everyone knows how much I love Mono Lake and that area, so of course, I had to see the Great Salt Lake in Utah. When we were leaving our hotel in Salt Lake City, it was snowing and super gloomy. It looked like the snow storm had caught up to us. We were close to just skipping the lake thinking it would be snowy anyway. But my philosophy has always been to at least try especially if you're already there. As we started driving towards the lake, we saw a huge break in the sky and saw blue skies with some clouds in the direction of the lake. It was amazing and we got lucky! Chasing Goth Sun (Total Solar Eclipse 2024) Bloomington, IN After a last minute change in plans due to terrible weather conditions along the totality pathway, we decided on Indiana 2 days before hitting the road. Meaning we had 3 days to drive from California to Indiana. For perspective, we had to cross 3 time zones. It was already stressful having to change last minute plans, but we were really chasing the storm across the country. We'd drive away from it, only to wake up the next day to some type of storm from snow storm, wind storm, snow storm + wind storm, dust storm, flood warnings, tornado warnings, highway closures, rerouting to different states, and we counted about 6-7 cars and trucks flipped on the road. But we made it alive'ish haha... I'd do it all over again just to experience these 4 minutes again and again with tears of joy. My first love has always been with the sky so this truly brings me so much happiness and I will always hold astronomy very close to my heart. I got to share this moment with my boys, Isaac and @chancesprague. I used my 250 mm long lens to shoot in different exposures, as you can see when you swipe. I got one shot of the sun before totality using a filter. The 5th photo has a small dot on the bottom, right that we think is Jupiter? Correct me if I'm wrong. The last photo, a plane happened to fly by on the top right.
