This small cottage is supposedly the house of Jock Howieson who, in 1532, rescued James V (father of Mary, Queen of Scots) from a gang of robbers who attacked him as he was crossing Cramond Brig. However, there is no evidence that this is a true story - the building dates from the 18th century and this would appear to be simply an 18th century tale, told by Walter Scott in his “Tales of a Grandfather”.
