EXCITING NEWS ABOUT THE ROYAL HOTEL IN HAYFIELD! 👑 ⭐ Today myself and Hayfield Parish Council received an email from one of the officers at @highpeakbc to say that the Council had received a disposal notification from the Wellington Pub Company PLC in relation to the Royal. As it is listed as an Asset of Community Value this has triggered a moratorium of 6 weeks which will allow the Save the Royal Group to put together an expression of interest in purchasing the property. If this expression of interest is submitted the community has 6 months to put together a bid to buy the pub! There's a lot of work to be done but we have a very able and committed group who are passionate about saving the Royal for our village. Thanks to all of you for the great work you are doing! As it happens there is a Public Consultation event on at the Cricket Club until 8pm tonight! There was a warm welcome from The Three Tuns in Guilden Morden for the Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, Dr Nik Johnson, who visited the community-owned pub with Plunkett UK yesterday. After opening in 2019, the pub is thriving today. It is a warm, comfortable place for different groups and societies from the village to meet together, and for people who live alone to find company. The visit to Guilden Morden by Plunkett UK and representatives from the Combined Authority was an opportunity to promote our ongoing partnership programme. In a remote part of the west Highlands of Scotland, a pub sits on the shore of the Knoydart peninsula. With views over the blue waters of Loch Nevis and the surrounding hilly, lush landscapes, The Old Forge (@theoldforgeknoydart) is the beating heart of the village of Inverie, a close-knit community with around 120 full-time residents. But this isn’t the only unusual thing about this local watering hole. Since March 2022, The Old Forge has been community-owned. Exactly what it sounds like, a community pub is owned and run by locals, who all have an equal say in how the business is run. And it’s not alone. The Old Forge is part of a swelling trend when it comes to community-owned pubs. According to the Plunkett Foundation, a charity that helps people set up community-owned businesses, there are 174 such pubs in the UK, as of January 2024. Research from trade body Co-Operatives UK found that the number of community-owned pubs in the UK has increased by 62.6% over the last five years. You may notice a blue plaque outside the pub, which commemorates its traditional role as a coaching inn where Britain's first mail coach changed horses in 1784! Other Pubs: Bell & Bear The Bell And Bear in Emberton closed in May 2019 and the owners, Wellington Pub Company, put the pub up for sale. At a public meeting in Aug 2019 a community group was formed to raise the funds to purchase the pub, with 84 people investing in a community share scheme, with shares in the Bell and Bear Limited which was formed in Jan 2021. The pub reopened in late 2021. The pub is run by a management committee elected from among the 84 shareholders, who are overwhelmingly local villagers. Our Vision Statement for Hull's first community pub - the essence of what we're trying to achieve. With the help of our advisors we've calculated that we will need a minimum of £520,000. That sounds like a huge sum, but we're hopeful of receiving £300,000 from government via a scheme called the Community Ownership Fund, and we have several other funding bids in process. Our initial share issue target (see link in comments) is just £150,000. Our business plan has been subjected to rigorous scrutiny and the share offer has been awarded the Community Shares Standard Mark from Co-operatives UK, an official ‘kite-mark’ for offers. We also needed approval from the Financial Conduct Authority to establish ourseleves as a Community Benefit Society - a company model that commits to re-investing profits in the local community, so it's fair to say we're doing a good job so far. Cheers to 2023 and everything we celebrated and achieved throughout the year! 🎉 We started off the year by beating the January blues with Jägermeister and helped those in need with the Winter Warmth campaign, in partnership with Only a Pavement Away ❤️ February bought us some delicious pink drinks and our fantastic Love Your Local campaign which again helped those in need with some fantastic nominations and donations 👍 We have had some fun celebrations for days such as St Patricks, Easter and the Kings Coronation just to name a few!
