Chung-Fu Chang, Full Professor at Colorado State University, is presenting “Creating Delicious Space in Movement Practice” sessions for both Educators and Students! This modern dance class is inspired by the philosophical exploration of Empty Space in Chinese Paintings, which encourages dancers to create and explore delicious space through dance movement practice with attention to movement initiation, breath, articulation and expression Chung-Fu Chang was born in Taiwan, where he danced professionally with the country’s internationally renowned Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. He has choreographed, performed, taught, and presented his choreography nationally and internationally. He has received nearly one hundred commissioned works from professional ballet and modern dance companies, festivals, and dance educational institutes worldwide. He is a Full Professor of Dance at Colorado State University, where he received the College of Liberal Arts Academic Enrichment Program Award in 2006, the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Mortar Board in 2008, and the 2009 Best Teacher Award from the Alumni Association. He was named the 2021 Legends of Dance from The University of Denver’s Carson Brierly Giffin Dance Library, now The Dance Archive. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the program's founding partner, the Daniels Fund, are working with chambers across the country to promote the National Civics Bee, a competition for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to test their civic knowledge and win cash prizes. The Denver Metro Chamber is currently accepting applications from middle schoolers throughout the Metro Denver region, and applications close Jan. 22, 2024. The top three students from the Denver Metro Chamber's regional contest will advance to the state competition afterwards, and then the top students from the state content will advance to the national competition in Washington D.C. Known as the slowest soft shoe routine in the world, Honi Coles and Cholly Atkins paired up to create this historical routine in the 1960’s when the rest of the tap world seemed to be dancing as fast as possible. Dr. Alyssa Arms will be presenting sessions for the student and educator tracks: Students will learn to take their dance to the next level by not only learning the anatomy but how to apply it into their dance. Make it easier to balance, support your arms, control your turnout, & more. Optimizing Anatomy Knowledge for Dancers: Dance educators will learn anatomy and how to best use it when it comes to dancers. Attendees will experience what it feels like to properly engage muscles or control movements, how to cue the same in the dancers, as well as exercises that help build strength or mobility in key areas. The goal of this session is to help dance educators optimize their dancers’ performance and minimize injury risk. Dr. Alyssa Arms, PT, DPT, OCS is a physical therapist, educator, and dancer. She is the owner of Back in Step Physical Therapy, where she specializes in working with dancers of all ages and genres. Dr. Alyssa works with dancers and dance teachers in her clinic, in the studio, and at events. With over 30 years of dance training, she continues to take classes across a variety of styles and is a current competitor on the national circuit for West Coast Swing. Glenda “Āiwa” Florez”, founder of the Nonprofit Organization, Hālau Kalama, also founded Polynesian Party Planners Inc & the Kalama Polynesian Dance Group was founded in 2007. Glenda is a Professional Polynesian Dancer, instructor and mentor who has trained with many Hālau (Hula Schools) across the Country. Glenda danced professionally for more than 12 years at The Mai-Kai Polynesian Restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale, FL where she learned the Polynesian Dances from the islands of Tahiti, New Zealand & Samoa. Her team trains men & women of all ages in the Art of Polynesian Dance & Fire Performances. In addition to performing at social events, Kalama also has a presence in many competitions throughout the year. Trained individuals in the group have placed in Tahitian Dance, Hula Dance, Siva Afi (Fire Knife Dance), & Tahitian Drumming. Glenda & some of her Instructors also teach on an online World Dance Platform called Raqs Online. Nai’a Bautista was taught at an early age (4 years old) by her mom, Glenda Florez. Nai’a has been trained in Tahitian, Hula, Samoa,New Zealand, & Tongan dance & she is also a Fire Knife Dancer. She & her mother currently teach Tahitian Dance Classes in Aurora CO. Featured instructors at many workshops, as well as recently a Workshop Retreat in Costa Rica, they aspire to teach more workshops abroad. A teacher at Hālau Kalama Studios, she is also part of Kalama Polynesian Dancers & performs at many events. Nai’a continues to learn dance & competes at numerous Tahitian Dance Competitions throughout the year. Nai’a has won two First Place Tahitian Dance Titles, 1 First Place World Dance, & currently named Top 10 Overall in Tahitian Dance in New York.
