Someday my prince will come (back)… At the end of the season, I’m bidding a sad, but hopefully temporary farewell to my dahlias. They’ve pretty much finished blooming now, and I picked and snapped these Samoan Prince a week or so ago. This week I’ll be cutting the plants back, and in a few weeks, I’ll dig up the tubers for winter storage. Well thank goodness that’s over! Like many of you in Australia, we’ve had a full-on heatwave, and at last it’s broken. Today was a very pleasant 32, and after the high 30’s and low 40’s, that is such a relief. The garden has held up ok, I just now need to hold up a bank to pay my water bill 🏦😫. There’s not a whole lot lot flowering, but a few dahlias have struggled through, and the zinnias are doing well. TBH, it was just too hot to even go out and pick anything… so I’m looking forward to this week, with mild temperatures and hopefully renewed energy for me too! I escaped home last night and visited my daughter in ADL. We went to the movies, went for a walk, got takeaway for dinner, and today stocked up at a fab Italian grocer, then back to reality and garden watering 🤣. Hope you all had a lovely weekend. sometimes, just sometimes, the planets align… and that’s what happened last week. A combination of cheap airfares, availability and wanderlust led to a spur-of-the-moment getaway to Queenstown in @purenewzealand. Even better, was I did it with my two oldest friends. And you know by oldest, I mean longest-term 🤣🥰. We’ve been friends for 35 years (we met working in a pub) and the chance to go to a place that none of us had ever been was too good to let pass. So off we jetted. And landed in the most breathtaking place I think I’ve ever been. In the five days we were there, we walked, talked, rode the gondola, took a helicopter flight and landed on a glacier, jet boated, para-sailed, and ate and drank extremely well. This glorious bed of Rudbeckia and Echinacea was on display at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens last year, and I came across them tonight when I was cleaning out the camera card. I just adore mass plantings like this and the staff at the gardens do it so well. From autumny displays like this to glorious swathes of summer annuals and spring bulbs. Don’t make this mistake with your marketing 👇 As business owners, we’re often head down in our work, and when it comes to marketing our product/service/business, we worry that we’re being repetitive, or that our online community get annoyed when we post about our products or services. The good news is that’s not the case! 🥳 There are many reasons why, but the reality is that your audience will only see some (not all) of your posted content. On Instagram alone, there are posts, stories, reels, lives, broadcast channels, DMs. And then of course there are other social platforms, your website, your email database etc. Chances are that your audience is not the same across all platforms, and even if there is some crossover, it’s unlikely that they are seeing your content every time you post. But don’t let that discourage you! Think of it as an opportunity to delve deeper with your content, or repurpose old posts. Recycling past content is a great way to inform and reinforce your message - you’ll often find that your existing community thank you for the reminder, and that you attract a new audience too - yay. 🎉 So don’t assume that everyone: 🤔 knows what you do 🛒 knows where/how to buy it 🛠 knows how to use it Don’t be afraid to talk about what you do 👍☺️. a carpet of roses and dahlias has made the cut for my February release greeting card. This pretty floral rainbow is made up of homegrown dahlias including Cafe au Lait, Florelie Seastar and some pink pretties that I’ve lost the label for… 🙃 along with Alnwick Rose, Crown Princess Margareta, William Morris and the Lady Gardener rose. The card is part of my floral collection, all grown and photographed by me, then printed into beautiful greeting cards that are: - 14cm square - blank on the inside - printed in Australia (from my original photograph) on premium 400gsm matte paper. The cards have a silky, smooth feel and are uncoated on the inside to make writing on them a breeze. Cards come with a white envelope, and are sealed in a recyclable cello bag. Be careful what you ask for they say…! Last night I asked for reading recommendations, and yay (!) received loads of tips, including many I’d never heard of which is always interesting! So here’s the list! 📚 Trent Dalton’s Boy Swallows Universe & Lola in the Mirror were faves of @tinajevans8, @clemhf10 & @sueybunting Demon Copperhead which I’d not heard of, also got a big wrap from @sueybunting & @robbyr1132 @alison_thepines had a busy month of reading and recommended: The Atlas Six (Olivie Blake) Deadly Education (Naomi Novik) Six of Crows (Leigh Bardugo) Fourth Wing (Rebecca Yarros) The Exiles (Jane Harper) The Thursday Murder Club series was recommended by @coffeepaperyarn, who also had Lessons in Chemistry on her list. @tinajevans8 was also starting the Thursday Murder Club and had some great tips including Fleur McDonald, an Australian author who bases her story in rural areas in WA and SA (sounds interesting). She had also read Scrublands and The Ballard of Songbirds and Snakes. All of which are new to me and I look forward to looking up. My sister @clemhf10 is one of the things that matter most to me, so I loved that one of her recommendations was ‘The Things That Matter Most’ by Gabbie Stroud. And finally, @milliestirling recommends ‘The Postcard’ by Anne Berest. And I always believe everything Meg says, so that’s on the list for sure. Thanks all for your contributions. This urn caught my eye as it’s bigger than the few tiny ones I already have. One of the handles had been broken and glued, so it was in the ‘broken’ basket, but I loved the shape and size, so bought it and have put it to good use at home. 42 degrees. And after an early watering session, and a quick pick in the rose and dahlia beds, the curtains are drawn, and we hunker down for the day. A good word that. Hunker. We’ve had a very mild summer so far, so there’s been very little hunkering, but tbh, I was glad for it today. I know I’m not alone when I daydream about a shed that I could escape to as the need arises… no ordinary shed of course, because while it would look rustic on the outside, inside I see it as part bar, part lounge room, part studio, basically a fabulous space that answers all needs. Why are you here? And by ‘here’, I mean on Instagram. It’s a question I’ve found myself asking over the past few months. I know why I joined (11.5 years ago unbelievably…!), and that was to share random pics with friends and family interstate. But over time that changed. I started to rediscover my love of photography and immerse myself into online creative communities like @its_my_week. Each week they would set a different theme, and I loved the challenges that would bring. For example, I took my first ever proper flat lay photo to join in a challenge in 2015. Taking part also gave the opportunity to make a heap of global connections with lovely peeps with similar interests. But then in 2018 my work situation changed as I started working full-time in my own business, and that triggered a shift in the type of content that I was creating. My pics became more ‘worky’, and to be honest, more of a chore to create. And I’m missing both the creativity and the community that I used to enjoy so much on Instagram. I’ve made so many lovely ‘insty-friends’ over the years, and I miss that. So this year I’m going to try and balance the work and creative content. Ok, So we’ve collectively embraced JOMO (see yesterday’s post) and I think that’s just marvellous. Something else I’m (re)embracing is some faffing with flowers. For the last few years I’ve marked the start of each month with an image, and last year I tried video. And it seems that both you and I prefer a still image. And that sure works with me, because it meant I had 15 minutes this afternoon of picking, arranging, shooting and editing. These flowers are from my garden, and the dahlias and really starting to bloom. This beauty is a Cafe au Lait, and the roses include Crown Princess Margareta, Alnwick, Just Joey and Peace. I don’t know about you, but I’m not so sure about resolutions 🤔. Lists however I can work with. I LOVE me a good list… Whether it’s ticking things off, or adding to an ongoing list, it just works better for me. Fireworks are a bit of a no-no in country towns due to the fire risk, so I’m playing it safe this NYE and have flowers as fireworks instead 🎆🎇. These crazy balls are giant/elephant/russian garlic flowers and once cut, will last for months. They also dry really well and I still have a jug of last year’s flowers (I’ll pop a pic in stories). Their explosive little flowers always remind me of fireworks and they always flower at this time of year so it’s perfect really 🤩🥳. And speaking of NYE, what are your plans? good morning Tammy, and thank you for being the first of my dahlias to flower. On a grey morning, your bloom is very welcome. Her tuber was planted on 26 September and I’ve been checking her every morning for the last week and giving the occasional words of encouragement 🤣. After growing a few tubers in pots last year, I’ve planted 24 tubers in my veggie beds. Unfortunately I’ve lost about 6 to rot which I’m sad about. But hopefully lesson learnt and I now realise the soil was too damp when I planted them. With that in mind, having my first flower appear is even more exciting. tell me it’s December without saying it’s December… When we moved here, the girls (who were 3 & 6) used to call these ‘Tim Tams’, and round bales were ‘snails’. We still call them that, and I smile when I see stacks of Tim Tams in the paddocks along Gomersal Road. When I drove back from Adelaide this afternoon, Tim Tam bales were being loaded onto trucks - hot work on a 38 degree day! Would you like a peek behind the scenes? Swipe through to see the steps I took to create my latest greeting / Christmas card - ‘Merry Citrus’ 🍊. 1. This is the overhead look at the setup. I’ve used the ‘Rustic Wood’ background, and rolled it out onto my table. The props/subject are placed on top, ready to be photographed. 2. The photo is imported into Lightroom, and edited to increase clarity. 3. The image is cropped and added to my greeting card design. 4. The final product! well hello there first hydrangeas of the season… (and cute little op-shop jug) 💚 in a recent-ish decision to grow what I love (think roses, dahlias, hydrangeas etc) I now have nine different hydies, with six all starting to bloom. As it’s so hot in Barossa, they are all in pots so I can move them to shady areas when required. These ones however are in a wine barrel so I have to try and remember to pop a sheet over them on warm days 🤔 🥵. These wee blooms got a little torched in the heat and aren’t quite the big full flowers I was hoping for, but hopefully there’s some of those still to come.
