******TRIGGER WARNING****** It literally happened in the matter of seconds. Delilah was outside, enjoying the nice weather. (1st picture) She was getting covered in freshly cut grass and dandelions (which her environmental allergies will hate) and then in a few seconds she started acting weird. (The video) As soon as I walked over to her, she slumped to the ground and started seizing. MEDITATING WITH DOGS Ready to turn down the anxiety in your life or your animal’s life? Try this easy meditation for 3 minutes every day for 40 days. The 1-minute breath: gently activate the ease of your parasympathetic nervous system to calm dissonance in your energetic field as well as the energetic field of the precious beings who live with you and love you. Always remember our animals naturally sync with us, mirroring our frequency. Begin by sitting quietly with your animal next to you- if you can, place your hand gently on their body. Make sure you are sitting tall, chest lifted, and chin slightly tucked. Close your mouth and begin to breathe through your nose, taking a few easy breaths-slowly and deliberately without force. Notice the air flowing through your nostrils. Keep breathing and start to count to 10-15 seconds as you breathe in, then hold the breath in for 10-15 seconds, and then let the air out your nose for 15 seconds. Ideally, we work up to 20 seconds for each parcel of breath in, 20 seconds holding, and 20 seconds breathing out. I'd be remiss if I didn't introduce my cubicle partner and company mascot – Rufus Teague. Yes, he's named after @rufusteaguebbq because it is in fact that good. He's a six year old Vizsla who grew up in the @navhdainternational system. Being my first hunting dog I've made more mistakes with him than I've got time to type, but training him has also taught me many, many (many) lessons that have enriched my life beyond the fields. When he was about 3.5 years old he had a grand mal seizure and was diagnosed with epilepsy. It crushed a lot of my dreams for his future, but also helped me to appreciate how finite and fragile a dog's life can be. Managing his (multiple) medications is very challenging and requires lots of red tape due to the nature of controlled substances. When things are "good" he will have one seizure about every month or month and a half. When things are bad, it can spiral into multiple days of trying to get him back to normal – it's taxing. Not to be be all doom and gloom, we still get to hike before work almost every morning. He's a very friendly and affectionate dog and I'm thankful for this remote work life that let's me spend the days with him. Last weekend Finn had his 4th seizure episode, a cluster of 2 brief generalized seizures. We took him by ferry to the @vca_canada Central Animal Hosiptal in Victoria BC for an emergency overnight stay. The staff are amazing. Finn made lots of new friends. He had IV phenobarbital, an MRI, CSF tap, test for MDR1 gene (multi drug resistance is common in border collies and australian shepherds, and can affect how phenobarbital is metabolized). This photo was taken on our way home, waiting in line at #swartzbayferryterminal . The back of his head was shaved, and he was exhausted from the general anesthetic, but so happy to be sitting up front with poppa (clipped into the seat belt by his harness, of course.) Finn has been started on Keppra. The aim is 8 to 12 weeks between episodes. It's not usual for Finn's breeds to require more than one medication. The median survival rate for border collies is 2.5 years from first episode. We'll devote ourselves to beating those odds. In between episodes, Finn is his usual self. He's coping well with Keppra. Today we came TOO CLOSE to losing our sweet Freyja.😔🐾 She had 2 back-to-back Grand Mal seizures that included 7 rounds of intense convulsions. After almost an hour, her condition stabilized enough for us to carry her to our local animal clinic. They ran several tests, increased her current medication, & gave us a rescue drug. She is back home with us now. Seizures SUCK!!! Sadly, there is still very little information available on the causes of epileptic seizures in both animals and humans.
