I stood in front of this door just over 3.5 months ago in minus temps, excited to start spring block calving. It's been my home, and I'm a little sad to pack up my stuff to go. I definitely needed this block calving to test myself after feeling a little stale, just relief milking for the past few years. We'll I can honestly say this spring tested us all!!! ๐ CALVING ๐ Over half of our cows have now calved, and we have a bunch of beautiful brown and white calves skipping around. ๐ฅ Our calves stay with their mums from birth, getting all the nutrition they need from their mother's milk. ๐ฟ Our cows are 100% pasture fed. We do not feed them any concentrates or grain to make them produce more milk. ๐ฅ The rest of the cows are due to calve within the next fortnight so we are hoping to have the milk shed re-open before the end of the month. Elbows deep sounds a bit much but I definitely was with this heifer. Most folk hate this job just as the smell of disintegrating afterbirth may turn many stomachs but its a job I love doing and helping the cow feel better. At this farm retained cleansings are few and fair between as the minerals are at the required levels for each group, dry cows, milkers etc. This heifer had twins so her reason for not cleansing properly was down to that. If a cow does not shed her placenta within 36 hours following birth, there's a good chance she won't shed it for seven to 10 days, since uterine contractions have ceased. It then takes the shrinking of the uterus and disintegration of the attachments for the tissues to come loose. Most cows shed the afterbirth 3 - 8 hours after calving. All farms should have protocols which are discussed with or set out by their vet. On this farm we intervene at 7 days unless we think the cow would benefit sooner. This heifer looked tucked up at a few days post calving so on examination I found quite a bit of afterbirth still inside her with her cervix still very much open. I removed as much as I could gently, gave her a wash out and took her temperature which is normal. She looked much better in herself afterwards probably feeling much relief. I'll check her in again in a couple days as there were a few bits left I could not pull out and should be left until they cone freely. If need be she will be given an oral drench and an antibiotic injection if an infection is present. This morning like many mornings on the ranch don't go as planned. This little bull calf was born as few days sooner than expected and it was a pretty cold ๐ฅถ morning. He was shivering and narrowly escaped a worse fate. Less than 50 yards away a coyote lurked waiting to make him breakfast. The coyote was hazed away with the tractor and he was hauled back to the house to warm up, despite being very chilled is showing improvement. He is in front of the ready heater, drank from the bottle and resting, hoping soon to return to his mama. These are the times folks not in agriculture rarely see, but it's reality for a rancher. It's been 5 weeks since I started working on this farm. In those 5 weeks a few random cows have come up to me to check me out. It's like they remember me from the last time I was here. They come up giving me a good ol sniff with that, I know her from somewhere look on their faces. Some say cows aren't able to store much memory but I think that's rubbish. I used to live 20 minutes up the road from here and relief milk for the family, and I'm excited to be back for calving time. After a few weeks of sleepless nights worrying/stressing about gale force storm after storm wrecking my ferry crossing, in between the heavy rain getting my allotment winter ready putting muck out on it then covering so it's not a mess come May when I go home, getting my car fixed up for the journey, packing everything I need into my handbag car, working everyday right up to the morning I left. Luckily, I saw a calm sea opportunity and jumped at it. I suffer from anxiety and sometimes heart palpitations. I can worry about anything and everything if I let my mind run riot. Some are born warriors, and some are born worriers. I'm kinda both at the time. When I have lot on my mind I go quiet too quiet. Registering the 2 latest little Angus calves this morning. They both needed names & we had some great suggestions on my Facebook post from a couple of weeks back. Fred & Clem really wanted to call the first one Eric but I just canโt use the same name twice so Iโve gone with โEzraโ & Saturdays arrival is little โLeoโ. Both will hopefully grow into lovely bulls over the next year. Ezra weighed 52kg at birth and is already a stocky little fluff ball! Leo needed a little hand to enter the world because Mum decided to take her time with labour! A little food for thought on gut colonization of the new born calf! Nature has it's order and we have much to learn! Vaginal delivery plays a key role in colonizing the calf with beneficial microbiota at birth. Typically, vaginal microbiota is dominated by one of four Lactobacillus species. These bacteria are swallowed by calf and colonization of the digestive tract begins. Other bacteria are also ingested by the calf as it enters a new environment. These bacteria are not always helpful. It is important to provide the calf with a clean area to be born so that harmful bacteria do not outcompete the beneficial ones during colonization of the digestive tract. It's a balancing scale of establishing enough beneficial microbiota to outweigh the bad! Probiotic supplements can sometimes be helpful in this balancing act!
