I have been out of Federal Prison now 3+ years and was granted early termination of supervised release (probation) just over a month ago. I started Brand 316 in 2022 focused on helping inmates successfully reintegrate back into society. Saturday was my first time back to prison since my release - something I have been praying for several months. It was surreal - the sounds of loud steel doors slamming behind you only so the one in front of you can open were all too familiar. The relentless sound of keys jangling, tall steel fences wrapped in layers of barbed wire, the stagnant smell and so on. You will just never forget that. While incarcerated I never imagined a future of going back into Prison but God had different plans. I am free to visit any state prison in Kansas to disciple, train and equip inmates using the Brand 316 curriculum. Brand 316 trains dozens of inmates currently incarcerated in both state and federal prisons. The ability to meet with them face to face in group settings is an answer to prayers – it is a game changer! Praise the Lord! The rate of exonerations for wrongful convictions has increased tenfold since the National Registry of Exonerations began tracking the data in 1989. In total, more than 31,000 years have been lost by innocent people spending an average of 11.6 years behind bars. The vast majority of these are due to DNA evidence, because it provides unquestionable evidence. Wrongful convictions can be a result of eyewitness misidentification, false confessions, misleading forensic evidence and police or prosecutorial misconduct. ⭐It is much harder to prove when informants are enticed to lie, when police are given false information, when prosecutors care more about their win rate than justice etc.⭐ I saw this on the Innocence Project Hats🎩 off to them – the amount of lives they have saved, names they have cleared and lives changed is incredible. Those wrongfully convicted still face the #stigma of incarceration – felons leave prison after “justice has been served” to an unwelcoming society, employers unwilling to hire, landlords unwilling to rent and a society unwilling to forgive. Preparation is key to success after prison including planning, training, a society willing to give a second chance and more. 3 years ago today I was released from Federal #Prison after being granted a compassionate release. I learned so much about the judicial system. After I was arrested, the government quickly offered a plea deal with a significant time reduction. I refused to consider it because I would not admit to something I did not do - even if it resulted in minimal time in prison. During my criminal trial, pertinent evidence was withheld, witnesses deliberately lied under oath for their direct benefit, and so on. The appeals court found there was “error” in my trial but it was “harmless.” How can any ERROR/detail in a jury trial, split for multiple days be harmless - especially after the trial Judge called it the most “complicated” case he has ever seen. There is a reason the federal government has a 99.6% win rate, innocence or guilt matters little. With that said, I also firmly believe that without nearly 4 years in Prison I would not have the relationship with #Christ I have now. I was and am totally dependent on Him! I would not have understood the serious need for people coming out of prison to get #employment, to have a strong and consistent support network and have the tools needed to succeed in life after prison. I would not truly understand the need of society and our churches to give people a true second chance. The #stigma of #incarceration keeps people #unemployed, forces people into #homelessness and puts them in desperate situations. I believe the Body of Christ can change that! Brand 316 #trains inmates while they are still #incarcerated for 2-4 years and upon release from prison for 52 weeks and beyond. Upon release they have full time #employment waiting for them, #Christian mentors, churches willing to accept them and a #training program that truly prepares them from adjusting from one world to another. He spent 48 years locked up for a crime he did not do. The prosecutor’s made a well thought out decision to withhold evidence that would have assisted his case significantly all to increase their win rate! This happens often in our system. So sad to read and glad he was exonerated, but how do you make up for 48 years? It is impossible to do. I will be praying for him. Christian Mentors are needed and dramatically impact the lives of others - specifically our members that are coming out of prison or recently released.
