Huge first! Eating his dinner IN THE KITCHEN... OUTSIDE his safe space! Never ever has done this. He'll come in to get treats & will quickly retreat. Just now even allowed me to walk past him to get more dry kibble to put in his bowl. He didn't run away when I walked towards him. I'm stunned. Truly amazed. He may not do it again for a while but that's ok. It's a huge step that he feels safe enough to eat not only out of his safe space but off of a mat. He's standing on the tile floor. Happy Re-Birthday to me! I got so excited I sneezed & hacked - please excuse me! No idea how old I really am but best guess is I'm turning 8. Mama chose 6/25 because it was the date in 2017 I was officially named by & processed into the rescue after having been saved 6 days earlier from the truck taking 1300 of us dogs to slaughter at Yulin. It was the start of my new journey so it's my re-birthday. I was given the name Carter at that time & it was my name for the 3+ years I was at the rescue in China but I never answered to it. Bramble was very brave wearing his angel fur brother's rain coat for his evening bathroom break here at the beach . He's never worn a coat before but he did great! OK my leg looks pretty terrible with the bruising & swelling - the surgeon did say it would look worse before it gets better - but my leg position is looking almost normal & I don't have stitches or anything! I'm home now & relaxing & starting the healing process. I may be missing some floof but I did my business outside & I even ate all my dinner & took my medicine like I'm supposed to do. Bramble is out of surgery & things went well. He will come home sometime tomorrow. It's been a long time coming but now that his knees have been repaired he'll hopefully be able to really start living his new life. It'll be a long recovery with lots of work doing rehab to help him build even muscle tone & to help him learn to distribute his weight properly. Hopefully he will lose some of his linebacker appearance now that he will be able to use his back legs properly. Was ready for my physical therapy walk this morning & I wasn't afraid of that weird old fountain at the park today! It's that red thing covered in black plastic in the 2nd photo. I didn't limp as much after my walk today either! My surgeon said my implant & bone are solid & staying in place but I gotta work on using the muscles she moved & tightened so they stretch & strengthen. I can't remember a time when my knees haven't popped out of socket & hurt & while my left knee still needs to be fixed my right leg is stronger than it's ever been! Don't let my floof fool you. You can see how narrow my back end is compared to my front. Happy Birthday Bramble! Today is listed as his "birthday" because I think this must've been the day he was processed/registered with @nodogsleftbehind after being rescued on 6/19/17. They have him as born in 2015 so we're going with the fact he's turning 6 today! He's been here 4 months now & it's been so hard for him but I am seeing some small wins. He's happiest outside but has just recently started to have the courage to cross into the living room inside Andy's house. Bramble acts like the bare floor is lava & his bed, mats, rug are islands. He has to touch the mat at the front door when going back & forth from the living room & will not go off the rug in the living room even though you can see he might want to. It's not that he isn't sure of his footing (I know some dogs need mats to gain traction), it's definitely a behavioral quirk. But it's a cute one & isn't doing any harm. It's a big deal that he's being brave enough to investigate. . It's the first time he's been confident enough to do so. He's still not eating like I wish he would but I do see less panic in his eyes. The whites of his eyes show less often, one sign indicating he's less a little less fearful. As long as he has an escape route back to his safe space he's been coming in the living room if we call him in. That's a big deal. Happy 6th birthday Bramble!
