Welcome to Element City, fans and followers of #fantASIAcelebration2024!! 🔥💧☁️🪵🌿 We’re celebrating the genius, deeply personal & heartfelt work of @petesohn18’s amazing Pixar film, ELEMENTAL, and I of course chose to bound as my fireball girl ᏋᎷᏰᏋᏒ ᏝᏬᎷᏋN (voiced by AAPI queen @leahmlewis!) 🔥🧡 . I’m deeply disappointed in myself for not having seen this movie til last month (+ Disney for not marketing this gem well/enough), and now? It has become one of my top 5 favorite comfort films. 🥹❤️ I resonate with it so deeply because it felt very parallel to the story & relationship I had with my father growing up—not pursuing my artistic dreams to pursue what I thought was “right” in his eyes, and for so long, never giving myself the permission to truly ask for it. Peter’s integration of his parents’ immigration story & his personal relationships woven into the fabric that is Elemental is what makes it an incredible film that I know many AANHPI immigrant kids can see themselves in. When Ember angrily tells Wade “Getting to do what you 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 is a 𝘭𝘶𝘹𝘶𝘳𝘺, and not for people like 𝘮𝘦!”, I felt as if I was transported back to 16 when I believed that too. I have been in her shoes; I know what it’s like to feel “the only way to repay a sacrifice so big is by sacrificing your life too.” But when Ember meets others that not only bring out the best in her & ignite her soul’s passion, but also when she realizes all her parents truly want for her is her happiness in life, she sets course for her own path that will continue to stoke her inner fire. It took me a long time to learn that too, but I did, and I hope all people get to do so with the support of their loved ones. . Thank you SO much Peter & the amazing team at @pixar for this film. I think what’s made both Bao & Turning Red so beloved and relatable to not just the AANHPI community, but to so many, is how Domee roots her characters & story in truth and the honest comedy & bittersweetness of growing up. It’s exactly THESE stories—that can be both universally relatable & also deeply personal/rooted in one’s own culture and experiences—that need to be seen, be heard, be told. It's Day 10 of March #disneyboundchallenge and today's theme is Nintendo Characters ! My son is a huge fan of Mario and made me discover the lovely Harmony. She is a major character in the Super Mario Brothers video game series. She is a human from a distant planet and the princess of a kingdom once ruled by her mother, but which she left to inhabit with the Lumas and protect the cosmos. Harmony made its debut in the series with Super Mario Galaxy, a video game released for the Nintendo Wii in 2007, and occasionally returned in subsequent installments.
