Car boot sale treasure. ⭐ I went to my first car boot sale last week in nearly 3 years! The last one must have been the summer of 2019. This is one of my finds that I bought instantly! It is mosaic made on an old tin plate. It's very old and all the fragments look like they are set in putty. As well as china there are fragments of glass, mirror and beads. Of all the things I’ve found this broken piece of china depicting a bulls head has to be one of my very favourites - at the very least because it makes me laugh (for all the obvious reasons) but from time to time it reminds me to check my innate impatience. A warning to the hasty if you will. There seem to be numerous notions as to why so much broken pottery & china ends up in the garden. One such idea was that people worked the fragments into the soil to improve it - ceramics being comprised of animal bone ash, high in nitrogen & phosphorus. I remember my dad was always digging up pottery in the house I grew up in. The odd bit of Roman pottery would turn up occasionally (there was a fortification nearby). He still collects it. Lines it up neatly on the sandstone window sills. I think one day I’ll gather it all together & make one huge ‘boodyware’ dish in honour of all his finds. Day 10 of #marchmeetthemaker and the title is ‘Small Detail’ so, here are some close-ups of my mosaics. 💕 I love adding little details for example words or names in letter beads, old buttons, glass beads, bits of patterned vintage plates, coloured glass, silver charms, 3D ceramic flowers or special little pieces of crockery with animals or flowers. 🌸 I look for the back stamps that say ‘made in England’ and include them, and save the gold edges of vintage plates to place on the outside edge so they shine in the light. 🌞 Colours, patterns, textures and little details are important to me. I select from a huge collection of crockery and recycled treasures that I have accumulated mostly from charity shop finds. Day2 #marchmeetthemaker Instagram challenge and it’s all about ‘style’. ☕️ The method of mosaic making that I use has many different names including Pique Assiette or Pic Assiette, meaning stolen plate mosaics. It’s also known as broken crockery mosaic or a term I learnt recently that includes using found ‘treasures’ is Memoryware Mosaics. 🫖 I love using broken vintage and modern crockery, recycled tiles, pieces of mirror, coloured glass, old buttons, silver charms, semi-precious stones, bits of broken jewellery, glass beads, pretty bottle tops, marbles and Millefiori beads. 💎 I enjoy thinking about the history of each piece I use. All the people who have held it or studied the colours and patterns. I see my mosaics as being similar to a patchwork quilt. 🌸 Colours are very important and so are the textures. The choice of grout colour is also important. I often use words in my work. I make signs, house numbers and I can personalise mosaics with names. I also enjoy incorporating the back-stamps from the bottom of the crockery, particularly the words ‘Made in England’. 🇬🇧 It’s all about the details. My 9 from 2019. 1. On the top my #twoforjoy #magpies I loved making this mosaic and I was sad to sell it but I know it has gone to a loving home, and hopefully it will bring them much joy! 2. In January I made the no. 9 house-number for the BBC TV programme #insidenumber9. It will feature at the beginning of an episode in series 5. 3. I love this mosaic #sugarskull I made for #dayofthedead. 4. The #number16 was a wedding present for friends, it has little Egyptian pieces of crockery and charms in it. 5. I like the simplicity of this little #blueandwhitechina plant pot. I have been growing and giving little money plants to friends. 6. The red rose mosaic mirror reads #mirrormirroronthewall and is now in my sister Rosie’s bathroom. 7. The #thehub sign was a community mosaic for a centre in #hurstpierpoint made by local people and coordinated by me. 8. The little personalised decorations were made for my family for Christmas but I also was commissioned to make lots more by lovely customers supporting my #smallbusiness . 9. And finally a beautiful #bluejay commission for a lovely lady who has chosen Brighton as her home but she is originally from Canada 🇨🇦.
