TODAY is World NF Awareness Day. 💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚 NF stands for neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that impacts 4 million people worldwide. One of those individuals happens to be my son. He was diagnosed at 14 months. I use any and all outlets in my life (including this board gaming community) to spread the word. I'm continuing the #blueandgreenbgtoendnf challenge this year. Throughout the month of May, I'm encouraging anyone and everyone to share a photo that includes blue and green board games in some way. It can be a game box, a game box with you in it, components, components with you in it, etc. Just post and use the hashtag above to help us spread the word. The more people who know about it, the closer we get to one day ending it. Oh! For many, May 1st is the day in which they post Justin Timberlake memes or create May baskets for people. All good things. I do enjoy a good "It's gonna be May" meme. 😊 However, in our household, it's also the start of a very busy month. Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs 🛡️⚔️🛡️⚔️🛡️⚔️🛡️⚔️🛡️⚔️🛡️⚔️🛡️⚔️🛡️⚔️🛡️⚔️🛡️⚔️🛡️ Don't let this tiny Gloomhaven game fool you for some cute adorable baby version of it's predecessors. It's a tough one. I lost the first scenario. Played it again and won, but not without some quarreling. It was barely a win. 😂😄😳 I'd say the major differences in gameplay between Buttons & Bugs and the big Gloomys are: ▪️ The size of the game, obviously. 📖 The time it takes to setup. ⏰ The time it takes to complete a scenario (which lessens the sting with a loss). 🧑🔧 The Minor tweaks to the actions (how you use your deck, etc.) 1️⃣ And of course, the player count: solo. My only complaint: the entirety of the rulebook is not in the box. The bulk of the rulebook is found online. I kinda wish I had the option to use a print copy or a digital copy. It's not horrible, but its not convenient either. If you are looking for a Gloomhaven fix, and don't have much time or the numbers to play the big games, Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs will do the trick. Another great game night last night! Busted out a new one. 😁😁😁 Godzilla: Tokyo Clash! Have you played this one?! I bought this on sale at Target awhile back. I had heard good things about it and had always wanted to try it. Last night, we finally made it happen. It was fun! It took a bit to get the hang of it. I think it's biggest downfall is the instruction booklet. Some parts are vague and inconsistent in terms of the layout and learning, but we overcame that, and the game took me by surprise. I recommend trying this one sometime, especially if you like Godzilla, and throwing Kaijus and vehicles at one another. That's pretty the sun of it. The scoring mechanic is VERY simple too. Simple AND unique. 🛫🛫FIRST IN FLIGHT🛬🛬 Though this First in Flight review is a little DELAYED, I'm happy to report it came in for a really srong LANDING. Delighted to share more about this SOARING game (and the upgraded bits) from @gotgeniusgames. 😁 First in Flight is a press-your-luck, deck-building game for 1-4 players. A play lasts about 45-75 minutes and it's for ages 12+. In First in Flight, players race to be thee leaders in early aviation. Players can be the famous Wright Brothers, Bessie Coleman, or other instrumental flight pioneers of the early 1900's. In the game, player's attempt flights using a deck of cards. Overtime, players will repair their planes (revise their deck for better, longer flight chances), gain experience, navigate crashes, and utilize friends, equipment, and skills to better their flight models throughout. First to 40 or after 4 years (rounds) ends the game. 🛩️ CONS ‼️ There's a lot of iconography in First in Flight. Not a huge flaw, but it does take some getting used, making the game have a bit of a learning curve. ‼️ Given the many icons and various actions, I do wish there was a better player turn reference card for each player. There is one on the player mat, but it is brief. PROS It may seem like I didn't like First in Flight. I'm being nit-picky. 😁 I actually loved it! This may become my favorite deck-builder! ✅ My first pro: the deck-building is as is. No more cards to purchase. There are different abilities, but not to the extent of a typical deck-builder. After you get the icons down, it's smooth sailing (or should I say FLYING). ✅ Beautiful artwork and theme. I love planes, so getting to play a plane themed game is a real treat. Oh, and the game bits: 😁😁😁 ✅ Historical aspects. Genius Games/Artana makes me want to learn more. They pride themselves on making games that are true to science and history. That's flippin' cool. ✅ The gameplay is smooth and exciting. On flights, am I gonna soar or crash?! 😧 ✅ My wife enjoys it too!!! More game nights! 😁 My rating: Game, up, up, and away! 🧇🧇🧇 TOP WAFFLE 🧇🧇🧇 I'm delighted to share a little bit with you about @lovemoregames' Top Waffle! 🧇 They were kind enough to send us this copy to share our thoughts, and we were able to get it to the table this weekend. 😁 In Top Waffle, 2-6 players compete to complete the most customer orders by collecting toppings and using items to satisfy the biggest of waffle fans. The game is played over 3 days (rounds). On a player's turn, they essentially take 2 actions (if applicable): 1️⃣ They collect two toppings or one item from the shared display. 2️⃣ And, if possible, use any items, and complete any number of orders they can with the toppings they have collected. After so many orders are completed, a round ends and all leftover toppings go to an individual's trash which can lose you points at the end of a game. As it says on the box, "...the player with the most points after...3 days wins, and becomes the Top Waffle!" CONS ‼️My only con with Top Waffle: I wished the cards were just a bit more durable. Why? Because this game requires a lot of picking up and moving cards around the table. Being it's a great game that could get played a lot, I think they should be a bit sturdier. (Side note: I sleeved this copy. I actually think that says a lot). 😁 PROS ✅ Great family game. A family game is great when both kids and adults enjoy themselves. That's what Top Waffle offers. My daughter loved it, and so did we. 😊 I see this one hitting the table frequently at family gatherings (hence: card sleeves). ✅ It has Point Salad vibes, but better. If someone takes an order you were working on, other orders still apply, so the "take that" element isn't too harsh. ✅ The theme, colors, and ease of play make this a keeper. It can be a great filler game as well. Finally, a fair warning: eat before playing. It can make you hungry. 🧇 My rating: Game, up, up, and away! (4 out of 4). Easy to learn, quick to play, strategic, and fun. So enjoyable. Thank you so much, @lovemoregames for letting us try this out! A play 5-6 years in the making. 😃 🦖🦕Jurassic Park: Danger Adventure Strategy Game.🦕🦖 I've had this since it appeared on the shelves at Target many moons ago. I've always wanted to try it, but never had the group for it. I finally got my chance last weekend with my gaming buddies. It was great. Those dinos are hard to win against... 😲🦖 👥 2-5 Players 🕒 50 Minutes 🎂 10+ 🦕Thematically, it's a win. Gotta love Jurassic Park, and the level of difficulty set within this game seems appropriate to the world of Jurassic Park. It would be a challenge to survive the dinosaurs, and the person playing the dinosaurs has an edge above the humans, so that works well. 🦕Game play is pretty straightforward. There are a couple things that can get confusing in the rules, but they just take some reminding. Playing in a group made it easier to disect the rules to make sure we were playing the game correctly. 🦕Ultimately, had I played this when it originally came out, I would have been head over heels for a game like this it, but over the years, I have played some pretty amazing games, so this has me enjoying it, but not raving over it. Plus, there are so many dino-themed, park-building, dino-chaos games out there now that are fantastic and feel like Jurassic Park. I actually think Dinogenics is a better Jurassic Park-like game (I kinda wished the IP would have just been slapped on that). All in all, we had fun with this one. I'm going to hang on to it to play with my kids. I plan on welcoming them to Jurassic Park sometime soon. 😄 Have you played Jurassic Park: Danger...? What are your thoughts? Had an excellent weekend of gaming this past weekend. One of the games I played was Under Falling Skies. So good. 😁😁😁 👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾👾 It had been awhile since I played UFS by @czech_games_edition. So, I revisited it. Got a play of the base game in (Roswell) and won, and then switched up locations (Washington DC). DC required me to play a couple rounds before I won. I'm hoping to playthrough the other locations in the coming weeks and take a stab at the campaign. This is an amazing solo, dice rollin', dice placement, Independence Day/Space Invaders-like board game that works sooooo well. It's pretty, fun, and challenging. I can't recommend it enough, especially if you dig solo games. Can't wait to give the campaign a go. Have you played Under Falling Skies? Have you tried the campaign? Any advice? My daughter and I gave Math Rush: Volume 1 from @gotgeniusgames a go yesterday, and I must say, this one was fun. Though it's apparent we need to work on our math skills. 🤣🤣🤣 Grateful Genius Games gifted us with this game so we can hone in on our Addition and Subtraction skills. 😁😁😁 👥1-5 Players 🕒15 Minutes 🎂 8+ In Math Rush, players work quickly together to meet 3 or more goals per round. Each player has a small hand of cards that consists of math equations, and the goal cards indicate how many cards you need to lay down to meet an objective. The goal cards may also include extra parameters such as "Addition Only" or "Odds Only" answers. Players calculate answers to the equations on their cards quickly in their head, and play them sporadically between other players in ascending or descending order while keeping the extra parameters in mind. At the end of 3 3-minute rounds, players add up the stars at the bottom of each goal card that they met to determine their overall score. Within the rulebook, teams then determine their level of mastery and try to beat their scores in future games. ➕➖🟰➕➖🟰➕➖🟰➕➖🟰➕➖🟰➕➖🟰 My daughter and I REALLY liked Math Rush, even though we didn't meet many goals. This game makes practicing math fun and engaging. It also has some rules to modify the game for younger players. I post about it quite a bit during the month of May ; NF Awareness Month. NF is a rare genetic disorder that impacts 1 in 2,000 individuals. 2.5 million people worldwide are fighting NF in many different ways. Each individual faces it differently, making it even more rare, if it wasn't rare enough. One of those fighters happens to be my son. If you want to learn more, I encourage you to visit CTF.org. It's the organization dedicated to ending NF, and the charity we support during our charity stream in May. 💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚 For those who started following since May, @board.at.home and I hold a marathon board-gaming stream to raise funds to #EndNF. All proceeds go directly to the Children's Tumor Foundation (CTF). CUBED: Next Level Dominoes is a real treat. This hexagonal, 3D domino-like game is pretty, pretty easy to play, pretty crunchy, and pretty fun. Did I mention it's pretty?! 😁 I played this for the first time with my son a few days ago. I was amazed how well he picked it up (he's 6), and he loved it! Not only that, but he beat me! 😂😂😳🤯 Crazy. Great, but crazy. ☺️ We had a lot of fun with this and look forward to playing it more, especially at family gatherings. This plays 1-11 players, and it plays quickly. I foresee it actually being pretty fun with higher players counts. In other news, I noticed The Friendly Rabbit (the publisher) doesn't have an Instagram account (from what I can tell), but that's who created the game in case you're interested. They have another one coming out soon: STAKD: Elevate Your Game. Looking forward to that abstract gem also. These are fun. 📊 Board Game Stats 📊 In February, I had a weekend away with @joshtholden1987 and a games day with @boardgamingwithmyfamily where lots of games were played, which got my stats up for the month, despite busy weekdays meaning few are ever played at home! Two new to me games tried this month - Trio, which is a memory card game - word of advice, if you are menopausal like me, don't bother playing this 🤣 The other new to me game was Marco Polo II, for which I had the world's most patient teacher in a young guy called Merlin I met at FBG Con. Had another awesome game night last night. ☺️ We kicked things off with 2 chapters of The Adventures of Robin Hood, and won both! I love this game. ♥️🏹♥️🏰♥️🌳 It's so good. It has interesting, unique mechanics. It's well-designed, and the built-in tutorial really does a nice job of setting things up. There's truly very little to complain about with this game. My only complaint: it can be challenging to flip over the various cardboard pieces on the map. And that's it. Such a minor thing. Otherwise, so good. I introduced this to my gaming buddies and they loved it. Needless to say, we'll be playing a chapter or two of this for the next few game nights, which is awesome. I'm hoping to even take this crew into the expansion... I love looking for board games at thrift stores, and I found this little beauty recently. I knew nothing about it, but all the pieces were there, so I bought it. Mensch turns out to be the precursor to 'Sorry,' so unfortunately I won't be playing it, because my son and I do not really like Sorry. But I had fun opening it and doing a bit of research on it. Mensch was developed in Germany over 100 years ago, and this particular copy still had the original (?) Price tag on it. The game is all in German, and the player board fits together like a puzzle. It's one of her new faves. 🦍🦩🦁🦦🐻❄️🐊🦒🐧🦍🦩🦁🦦🐻❄️🐊🦒🐧🦍🦩🦁🦦🐻❄️ In Nimalia, each person is in charge of designing their own habitats consisting of wetlands, grasslands, icelands, and jungles. Various animals live within these habitats as well. At the beginning of the game, 4 objective cards are revealed to guides players' placement of their habitat cards. They indicate how animals and habitats will score for the round. At the beginning of each round, each player is dealt 3 cards, and 2 or 3 of the 4 objectives are active during the round. They place a card (to be kept within a 6x6 square), and pass their hand (left or right depending on the round). This process repeats itself until each player has played 3 cards each. Scoring takes place based on the round's objectives, and then a new round begins. The game is played over 5 rounds, and whoever has the highest score at the end, wins! This is a fun, easy-to-learn, quick-to-play, beautiful-to-look-at game for 2-4 players. It plays in about 20-30 minutes (potentially even quicker once you get the hang of it), and is designed by William Liévin for ages 10+ (I think 8+ could play it). My wife and I got to our favorite spot (@teacellartea) yesterday to play some board games. It was kind of a late Valentine's Day date (hence those flamingos). 🥰 We revisited Uwe Rosenberg's New York Zoo. Playing it on BGA sparked a desire to play it in person. This game is lovely.
