I wanted to stop at every one of them! The tree also produces these attractive large fragrant yellow/golden flowers. Inside the fruit pod contains the fruit which is naturally dried on the tree itself. The only fruit in the world that does this. The seeds inside are surrounded by the pithy edible dried fruit. When you touch it you can break it apart and it turns to powder. I love the taste of the fruit, just like a citrus sherbet, smooth and moorish. The Indigenous people of the region often use the hard outer casing of the fruit to make attractive ornamental engravings and its fun for the children to rattle the nut and hear the clucking of the fruit pod inside. The boab nut can stay intact many months after it has fallen but also cracks open upon hitting the ground. HENRY'S HUMP DAY BOAB TREES Today we went for a drive along Parry creek and part of the Gibb river road n got grubby in search of boab tree fruit for me and mum and dad to try. We came home with 4 ripe fruits, so im going to tell you all about them. The fruit is hard and has a fuzzy Layer on the outside. Some refer to it as a nut because you need to crack open the woody shell. If you shake it you can hear the hard flesh rattling around. Once inside you find a white chalky flesh and some hard seeds. It has the chalky texture of a musk lollie. You can either crack some away and suck on it or soak it in water for a more 'cooked apple' texture and a banana lollie taste. The local aboriginal people in Wyndham carved beautiful artwork into the side of some to show us. They told us that its like a syrup if you mix it with sugar water. They also explained that its a good medicine for tummy upsets. We had fun eating it and spitting out the seeds. Its supposed to have more vitamin c than oranges and more iron than beef, so i should grow extra big and strong this week. The tree forms a hollow in the middle of its famously shaped bottle trunk where it stores drinkable water. They have historically been used as shelter and prison cells since they get very large. Some are suspected to be over 2000 years old. They are only found in the Kimberley region and parts of Africa.
