*This memory popped up on Bries’ Facebook from a post last year & just like that all the emotions from that day are back* Nursing is HARD. Plain & simple. You go into every shift with nothing but good intention and would never wish ill will on anyone. You do what the dr asks, you preform your tasks, you clean, you answer call lights, you speak to family members, you consult other disciplines to be involved in a specific patients case, you give meds, you monitor vitals, you chart on not 1 but 4 patients all while making sure everyone’s needs are addressed & no one is deteriorating....without giving much information, I spent my entire 12 hour shift getting completely berated by a patient over & over & over again due to the fact that the MD (by law) had to report her to the DMV & revoke her drivers license for safety reasons for not only her self but OTHER PEOPLE on the road. I was this patients punching bag, I was the reason why this was happening to her, I was the reason why she was loosing her job, I was the reason why her life was over. She even asked me to place a bullet in her head.... all while in the next room my patient was being placed on comfort care with 10 family members at bedside asking me questions regarding time left & prognosis. This is just a quick glimpse into the day to day struggles as a nurse, not every day is like this day. But, when it does happen to you don’t forget.... You too are human, You too have feelings & believe it or not even though you are doing your job you too are empathetic towards whatever that family member or patient is going through. Don’t make yourself feel like you need to be a super human & act like you aren’t affected, sometimes your feelings are just as raw as the person going through them. A lot inspires me. People inspire me. Working in the NHS, I see the most amazing professionals going about doing their job, day in and day out tirelessly, changing lives in small and sometimes great ways. I see these professionals and it inspires me to want to do better. They inspire me to want to be more knowledgeable and to do more in my profession so I have more experience to pass on. My patients inspire me. They inspire me to be more thoughtful, less judgmental and generally just kinder to human beings. Because really, life can be a massive shit, and people don’t want more shit do they. I (sometimes) see my friends. The ones that have stuck around to try to appreciate the NHS hard-worker, inspire me to be patient like them. My family inspire me to love deeply and live in the now. We don’t chose family, but they are the only ones we get. We see too much in the NHS, as nurses, every day, and you really do learn to appreciate the fact that life is far too short. So get up, go out, breathe in some fresh air, exhale, repeat, and inspire those around you with the strength and determination you carry 🖤.
