Here’s what happened on our 2024 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝗸𝗼𝘁𝗮 tour! We had a blast riding from Custer to Edgemont, wrapping up at a true western watering hole in small-town Edgemont, SD. Riders enjoyed a steam-powered train ride from Hill City, and visits to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. The last leg took us from the Needle’s Eye down the famed Needles Highway and through the wildlife loop in Custer State Park, ending with a ride on the Mickelson Trail to Deadwood. Pardon our radio silence. We've been too busy riding our bikes throughout the islands of southern Japan. Full summary to come, but this is the real first vacation I've taken in over 4 years. I'm neither the rider or traveler I used to be, as this process brought back so many memories that made me wonder how I did it. After a 9 hour flight, I hit the overnight Orange ferry outside Osaka and arrived in Imabari. A small drive up a couple islands and then settled into a lovely, quiet, rural island landscape. I really enjoyed my time here. It's coming to a close now, and I've had the pleasure of working on a traditional Japanese home, cooking, fishing, barbecuing, riding bridge to bridge and Island to island and making new friends. Since I'm pretty new to TCH, most trips I work have at least one person I haven't met, and by the end of the week, it feels like we've known each other for years. That's partly because we depend on each other throughout the week and spend so much time around a table eating together. Those two things create a strong bond that's super real. "I am heading to Gustavus, AK, for a friend's wedding in July. Simply getting to Gustavus seems like an adventure in its own right. Already missing Tenerife after a week! 😅 It's weird how quickly we get back to normal after a vacation, isn't it? In fact, our vacation didn't start out in such a relaxing way because I realized at the airport that I had forgotten my ID at home! 😳 Even though I had written out a packing list days beforehand, I had forgotten the most important thing! Two very swift taxi rides and a lot of money later, I was back at the airport just in time - with my ID - to catch the plane.
