I HATE USAA Bank. I have lost well over $300, more like $700 just by banking with them. They used to reimburse when someone would steal money or a card or something like that but now they just give a temporary credit and take it back and then it's like they didn't do anything about the problem after that they don't even credit the account but they'll do an investigation and then after their investigation doesn't do anything different they'll reverse the money again without giving the credit but then they'll reference the credit that they gave the first time. I've been with them for 12 years, I have lost a lot of money because of their recent bullshit. I try not to hate anything or anyone, but I hate USAA Bank. Beneath the iconic art deco façade of Launceston’s iconic Holyman House building, a bustling newsagency thrives amid changing times. Brisbane Street News and Lotto, with dedicated owners Garry and Donna Matthews at the helm, provides a rich shopping experience for regulars and passers-by. This beloved small business is best known for three things: its busy lotto counter, extraordinary selection of magazines, and welcoming staff. “We’re all very friendly, personal sort of people,” says Garry of his team, comprising himself, Donna, and two staff members, Jacob and Angela. The offerings at Brisbane Street News and Lotto haven’t changed a lot since Garry took it on 21 years ago – alongside vast shelves of the latest magazines, customers can still pick up the morning paper and peruse a great selection of greeting cards, stationery, gifts, souvenirs, and snacks. “The only thing that’s evolved,” Garry says, “is that our lotto sales have grown while our newspaper sales are less. “Our prime mover is certainly lotto – that’s where our strength is these days. Initially, the strength was more in papers and magazines, but they have slowed down a bit with the changed that have occurred in print.” Even so, the shop remains a go-to for many locals who enjoy a tactile reading experience. “Magazines are still very much a strong part of our business,” Garry says. “There are people who say that magazines have fallen away, but they haven’t for us. For more than 40 years, Launceston Sport and Surf has been supplying locals with everything they need to embrace the great outdoors in style. The St John Street shop is one of Australia’s largest locally owned surf stores, stocking a ripper range of adventure clothing and gear from the best brands in the biz. “Particularly through January, we get a lot of international visitors into the shop and people are always asking, ‘Where are your other outlets in Melbourne and Sydney?’,” says owner Amanda Gutwein-Burke, better known to locals as Mandy or Mands. “It’s just us. We’re an independent single store, and that’s fairly unique.” The store underwent an exciting interior renovation in 2023: the counter space and change rooms were redeveloped, and the upstairs ski hire workshop transformed into a groovy surf hub where avid and novice surfers can pick up surfboards, accessories, wetsuits, and more. “I love the response from people who haven’t been in before or for a while, and they say, ‘Oh gosh, look at all this!’” Mandy says. “That ‘wow’ moment is really satisfying.” The friendly staff at Launceston Sport and Surf vary in age and experience, from Steven, who recently celebrated his 40-year anniversary at the store, to students learning the ropes. “Steve’s an enormous asset,” Mandy says. “And we have other team members that are part of our journey while they’re building their own worlds, whether it be while they’re at university or at school.” Mandy says that together, the people at Launceston Sport and Surf are its biggest asset. “We had a training night one evening and were working out who’d worked in retail, where they’d come from and their different experiences,” Mandy says. “Collectively, we had about 60 years of experience, which is pretty epic.” For the full version of this interview, head over to the link in our bio!
