Metagoon & Project Raccogliere are inviting you to visit their work in Salizada Malipiero, Venice City (San Samuele/Palazzo Grassi) on Friday 15th (10 am–7pm) and Saturday 16th (10 am–12 noon) March. Metagoon is a tool for observing and investigating the Venetian lagoon. The project, which was started in 2015 and is still expanding and developing, consists of an archive of footage and interviews that survey the varied and complex aspects of the Venetian lagoon and the communities that inhabit it. Metagoon seeks to cast a light on the knowledge, traditions, transformations, and contradictions of the lagoon ecosystem, creating a map in which borders are outlined by interviews, stories and silent observations. Project Raccogliere started from a more-than-human perspective with salicornia and the Barene at its core. It aims to narrate a rather complex intertidal ecosystem in decline, challenged by global warming, salinisation as well as the loss of population alike. By portraying the plant and other halophytes as vital for the marshlands, as well as by interviewing locals ranging from scientists, chefs, arts & culture who practise acts of regeneration and resistance, new blueprints of living with the lagoon emerge. Project Raccogliere features them in our dedicated zine started in 2023 and we continue this work on our platform online (PagineBlue). Both Metagoon and Project Raccogliere understand their practices as deeply rooted in exchange. Passeggiando attraverso i campi, le dune e la pineta si trovano le 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 per osservare gli uccelli stanziali e migratori, ma anche la 𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹’𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗹𝗮 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝗽𝗲, 𝗹𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼. We took a little field trip to Lazaretto Nuovo last weekend. In the 1460s, this was a stopping point to inspect and quarantine ships and crews to prevent the spread of the black plague. The word quarantine actually comes from Venetian “quarantena” for the forty days that ships & crews were isolated. The isola also features the Sentiero delle Barene— a path through the sand marsh, where you can experience some of the lagoons natural ecosystem, including seeing halophytes native to the lagoon like Salicornia. In the world of glassmaking, Cotisso represents a fascinating journey of transformation. It describes the first melt of glass, baptized by water and then reborn in the crucible's fiery embrace. Cotisso embodies sustainability and innovation, ready to be reborn as scrap in future melts with different techniques. It's the art of glass evolution, where every shard tells a story of renewal and endless possibilities.⁠ ⁠ Our recent exploration on ways to reuse Cotisso is the collaboration with @StudioNucleo, that brought Barene to life. Barene, inspired by the the submerged tabular terrains in the Venice Lagoon, is manufactured through glass fusing technique and solely uses recycled Cotisso from blown glass production. From the perspective of our non-human actor salicornia, we started to investigate the fragile intertidal zone that is the Venetian lagoon and marshlands (barene) There, salicornia and other halophytes are setting the ground for itself and other species to thrive. With increasing salinisation in the otherwise fertile soil, and the presence of the plant even further up the Po river, Venice turns into the forefront of global warming. On the other hand it is hailed as a possible-at least temporary-solution to agricultural land that is deemed lost. In mainland Europe the plant is even commercially grown, as its potential for healthy salt is slowly recognised. How might a Venetian food culture look like where this to be a core ingredient in its cuisine? Our interviewees from @venissa_tenuta and @prometheus_lab are looking into these questions as they are witnessing these changes in the local foodscapes. @sigrid_schmeisser brings together the interviews and perspectives on the changing lagoon in the publication raccogliere in which many initiatives in the lagoon that promote regenerative and resistance actions such as the work of @baralberto and LifeVimine are featured. Cristina mi ha proposto tempo fa le sue opere e quando ho pensato alla mostra sui Veneti antichi e la laguna mi è venuta in mente lei, che usa le sabbie e che gioca con i colori… questo quadro, “Flusso” l’ho sentito adatto, io ci vedevo la nostra laguna ed ho invitato Cristina a partecipare! Leggete e poi visitare il suo sito! Cristina Bruniera è un'artista italiana la cui forma espressiva preferita è la pittura. Il suo stile artistico ha subito una svolta durante il suo soggiorno in Australia nel 1991, dove ha trovato ispirazione nei colori e nelle forme della natura australiana, soprattutto nella sabbia rossa e bianca. Questa esperienza ha influenzato profondamente il suo modo di dipingere. Le sue opere si concentrano sulla cattura di momenti significativi della vita, ispirati dalla natura e da persone amate. Oggi vi voglio presentare il quadro dell’artista Veneziana Claudia Coró, l’ho chiamata a partecipare ed appena sentito il tema ha subito pensato a questo quadro, per me è stato amore vedendolo sposarsi perfettamente al mio progetto! “Pescatori a Deo” Pescatori a dita, due pescatori in acqua che pescano a mano, e dietro ed intorno laguna! Claudia in questo periodo si trova ad avere in un doppio legame artistico con la sua terra di nascita … oltre che presentare da noi il suo quadro all’interno della mostra “Venezia prima di Venezia”, l’artista ha recentemente presentato l’ installazione ambientale “Luce Sommersa” sul progetto “Terra/Cielo”, svoltasi all’isola di Torcello, (una delle prime isole abitate dai nostri Veneto antichi in fuga dalla terraferma) usando mosaico vitreo come omaggio agli straordinari mosaici bizantini della Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta su frammenti di Bricole e Paiolato di barche. In quanto Veneziana di nascita, chi meglio di lei può immaginare e reinterpretare la sua laguna !! Da quando è diventata mamma ogni tanto ospita anche altri artisti nel suo Giudecca Art Space. Ieri sera abbiamo avuto un appuntamento in studio con la storica, docente, scrittrice ed autrice dei libri dove ho studiato per la preparazione della mostra in corso, ci ha parlato di Veneti Antichi e dei loro riti e di quanto i cavalli Veneti avessero importanza, non solo per l’allevamento ed il commercio ma anche per riti sacri… nei terreni sottostanti ad Altino se ne sono trovati sepolti ma importantissimo è il cavallo con tutta la bardatura scoperto ad Oderzo ed ora al museo civico della città! Per la sacralità ed importanza del cavallo ho deciso di inserire un’opera che lo raffigurasse … ho pensato subito all’arte di Stefania Gallina pittrice con il suo bellissimo cavallo bianco “Bardatura Calda”. Grazie Stefania per aver arricchito la mostra e le mie opere in vetro “Venezia prima di Venezia… andata e ritorno”!!
