I know I have been very lucky in my career to be able to travel and talk about something I'm passionate about, but I often forget that there aren't many faces like mine at events like this. I was on stage talking to around 400 people about why cyber security is important in a virtual/cloud environment. Maybe not an exciting topic but something we all take for granted now 7 years later. Growing up my Chinese and Asian male role models were either my family running Chinese restaurants, takeaways or fish and chip shops. The ones you saw on film were martial arts stars or the butt of jokes. I forget how important it is to have Asian representation, and that we don't have to be Kung Fu stars to get on stage! Although I never forgot the hardwork, long hours, physical toll, verbal abuse and threats of violence that my parents had to endure to build theirs and our life in the UK. It has made me grateful for what I have achieved so far, with more to come. Representation is important. Remember that entitlement is when equality feels like discrimination. Her collegiate career was marked as the all-time assists leader and points scorer in NCAA history until 2011, then she tied second as the second- most decorated U.S. female winter Olympian. A recent study came out that stated 42% of Americans cannot name a single Asian American. Growing up, I really struggled being “different”. NOBODY looked like me. When I turned on my TV I saw beautiful individuals with light skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes. It wasn’t until I saw more #AsianRepresentation that I began to feel like I belonged. I’ve come to a point in my life where I’m at peace and confident with being “different”. It's Asian Pacific American Heritage month and we all know / have heard of the crazy stories lately of hate and violence towards the Asian community. I personally cannot say I have any personal experiences regarding this (and don't you come for me bec my Abba will come for you 😆) but, one thing that made me appreciate about all this talk, is how Family, especially honoring our elders/parents are put in the forefront. This month, I want to celebrate my Mother 💕🥰 (2nd pic is her fave photo of her!) My mom is full Asian but very non-conventional. She was not the "typical strict Asian parent". She always encouraged me to be bold and confident. The first one to believe in my gifts, the proudest when I use them. My mom taught me to stand up for myself, to use my voice, to express myself. Resilient in all ways, my mom showed me you can be fierce and loving. That you can work hard and STILL take care of yourself. She taught me you can handle the worse day with grace and style. Literally ALL her kids have nothing but AMAZING and GOOD things to say about her. I'm so blessed to have her as my mommy. Mabel Ping-Hua Lee (1896-1966) was a Chinese advocate for women's suffrage and a member of the Women’s Political Equality League. Her family emigrated to the US in 1898 as her father was a Baptist minister. After her father suffered from a heart attack, Mabel took over his work and became the head of the First Chinese Baptist Church in Chinatown, New York. She was New York through and through by growing up on Bayard Street, attending Erasmus High School in Brooklyn and matriculating at Barnard College. She later went on to be the first Chinese woman to earn her doctorate in economics at Columbia University. Mazie Keiko Hirono is the first Asian American woman elected to the US Senate and helped introduce the recent COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, a bill to address the rise in hate crimes and violence against the AAPI community. . She is a strong advocate for immigration laws and for women’s rights. This maybe due to her own experiences growing up, which is now captured in her anticipated 2021 autobiography, “Heart of Fire: An Immigrant Daughter’s Story” by @vikingbooks. Her grandparents immigrated to Hawaii in the 1920’s to work on the sugar plantations, but Hirono’s parents moved back to Japan when they were first married. After giving birth to three children, Hirono’s mother left an abusive marriage and moved back to Hawaii. As a single mother, she worked three jobs to make ends meet, and often had to move the family constantly. I’m sure her mother’s strength is the backbone of her own courage as she often speaks fearlessly against her opponents. I just wanted to take a moment to recognize the founder of Zoom, Eric Yuan. He is an Asian role model we should all strive to be. He has faced doubts and rejection about his ideas many times and he even had trouble obtaining a visa when coming to the United States. However, Mr. Yuan kept on trying and eventually, he became one of the most successful and rich people in the world who assisted in keeping things afloat during the pandemic. Without Zoom technology, schools, businesses and relationships would further suffer due to COVID-19. Only 100 years ago were women allowed to vote and with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, Chinese Americans were not able to vote until 1943. Mabel Ping-Hua Lee (1896-1966) was a Chinese advocate for women's suffrage and a member of the Women’s Political Equality League. Her family emigrated to the US in 1898 as her father was a Baptist minister. After her father suffered from a heart attack, Mabel took over his work and became the head of the First Chinese Baptist Church in Chinatown, New York. She was New York through and through by growing up on Bayard Street, attending Erasmus High School in Brooklyn and matriculating at Barnard College. She later went on to be the first Chinese woman to earn her doctorate in economics at Columbia University. The “model minority” stereotype has its roots in political narratives promoted by the US during the Cold War. This term is often used to portray Asian Americans as a hardworking, successful, and well-educated ethnic minority that contrasts with other minority groups. This misperception does nothing but renders Asian Americans invisible in discussions of racism and prejudice in the US and other countries. Question of the day: How can the Asian communities enhance their visibility and representation in a sustainable manner? E.g. Education, extracurricular activities, career, networking, etc. . . . Mitsuye May Yamada is an acclaimed poet, feminist writer, and human rights activist. Much of Yamada's work draws on the wartime incarceration of Japanese Americans. Yamada was born on 5 July 1923 in Fukuoka, Japan. Her mother was an Issei, a first generation Japanese immigrant. Yamada spent the first years of her life in Japan with a neighbour family while her mother returned to the US. Indeed, she had to care for one of Mitsuye's brothers who was seriously ill and rejoined Yamada's father, in Seattle. After returning from Japan, she spent her remaining childhood with her parents and three brothers. When WWII broke out her father was arrested and branded an enemy alien, despite working for the government as an interpreter and immigration service official. The family was forcibly removed to Minidoka, the concentration camp located in Hunt, Idaho. Yamada was then 19 years old. Yamada was so affected by this experience that she documented her time there in her first book, Camp Notes and Other Poems. Although it was written during and just after her internment, this work remained unpublished until 1976. Throughout her career, she encouraged Asian American women, and all women from other ethnic minorities, to assert their rights in society. In 1982, she received a Vesta Award from the Los Angeles Woman's Building. Yamada published her latest book Full Circle in 2019 at the age of 96. . . It’s primary day in NY and polls are open. If I were in this district I would be voting for her. Yuh-Line Niou, who serves the 65th NYS Assembly District, which represents the lower Manhattan neighborhoods that include Chinatown and other minority neighborhoods. She was one of the very first legislators to sponsor the proposals to fully repeal 50-a (the shielding of prior police disciplinary acts), the creation of the False 9-1-1 complaints (a law to penalize falsehoods exampled by Amy Cooper), the appointment of the Special Prosecutor (an independent oversight over police crimes) and others. Ironically, she is the first Chinese American to represent one of the oldest Chinatown districts in the country, and that has an extremely mixed population due to the dense housing developments. Senator Tammy Duckworth hits all the firsts - First Asian American woman elected to Congress in Illinois, first female double amputee in the Senate, and the first Senator to give birth while in office. Following her father’s footsteps, she joined the Army and was deployed to Iraq in 2004. As she co-piloted a helicopter, she was shot down by insurgents, and lost her leg.
