Austrian Postal Savings Bank, Vienna, 1904-06, 1910-12. Architect: Otto Wagner (1841 Vienna - 1918 Vienna). The exterior of the Post Office Savings Bank is ornamented with aluminum rivets that purport to “hold” the stone slabs of the facade. But they famously have no constructional function - their varied rhythms merely - and musically - articulate the different parts of the facade. It has vaguely classical proportions and parts, like a Sullivan building - base, shaft, crown - but the specific parts are stunningly idiosyncratic and original, though they clearly “interpret” historical forms (rustication, cornice, architectural dentils, etc). Wagner wanted to create urban buildings that were of the spirit of their times and equal to anything in the other great cosmopolitan centers of the day - Paris or London. Austrian Postal Savings Bank, Vienna, 1904-06, 1910-12. Architect: Otto Wagner (1841 Vienna - 1918 Vienna). Wagner’s most important work is a great thrill to visit; the great banking hall is an expression of clarity and simplicity, articulating the correspondence between its design and its usage. It is a mature work that trumpets the arrival of a new kind of space - clean, light, open, elegant, refined, modern. It has something of an industrial train station - but it is more self-aware and deliberate. Wagner uses the newest materials - it has a glass ceiling and a glass floor; it has slender steel piers and electric luminaires, and it has fancy aluminum air outlets with small aluminum spheres to maintain the open passage of air. The details are tectonically developed: rivets and spacers necessary for construction and beauty alike. Very rare collection of 47 loose lithographic printed plates showing a wide variety of stucco design artworks for all interior aspects. Most of the plates have a number of designs which coordinate as a group, others as a single design. The design folios were created as versatile inspiration boards highlighting the latest trends in the Art Nouveau / Jugendstil aesthetic for interior designers/decorators/architects of the period. In overall good condition..blemishes/imperfections commensurate with age. Folio having discolouration, marks and some foxing. Cloth binding partially split and the ribbon is torn/missing. Plates generally clean, with some age toning, darkening along edges of green backing cards, marginal foxing etc. Some roughening to card edges from being stacked loosely within portfolio and ribbon tie likely causing some wear over time. All in all a nice and very rare turn of the century graphic arts folio which is an amazing reference library and window into interior designs of the period. The former Thom-Bauklempnerei (plumbing) in Friedenau was built in 1904 by the architect Peter Vogler. The combination of cinnabar red bricks and plastered ochre-coloured façade elements can be seen more frequently in Berlin. The so-called nutcracker faces to the left and right of the arched portal of the side entrance also place the listed building in the Art Nouveau style. Stadtbahn Stations Karlsplatz, Stadtpark, Vienna, 1894. Architect: Otto Wagner (1841 Vienna - 1918 Vienna). Wagner was responsible for the design of Vienna’s new municipal railway stations, viaducts, and bridges throughout the city and they survive as exemplary evidence of the visionary and modernizing public works of the era. The works also demonstrate the Vienna Secession’s contribution to the development of modern architecture - ideas about tectonics, new materials, function. For the Karlsplatz and Stadtpark Stadtbahn stations, Wagner (and his team) integrate decorative motifs with exposed structural elements, demonstrating what Wagner summarized in his 1896 book Modern Architecture, “only that which is practical can be beautiful.” The visible iron framework was filled with 2 cm thick marble slabs on one side and 5 cm thick plaster panels on the other - a 3 cm void is held between. Wagner’s use of glass and steel in the station’s construction was innovative for its time, allowing for natural light to penetrate into the generous interior public spaces. One sometimes reads that Wagner’s students Olbrich or Hoffmann or Plečnik “actually” designed these stations - but it was Wagner’s office, they worked for him, and they were “draftsmen” - all were a team led by Wagner and the design is surely consistent with his authorship. Secession Building, Vienna, 1897-98. Architect: Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867 Troppau - 1908 Düsseldorf). A Temple for the Arts - the architectural manifesto for the Vienna Secession, a group of artists and architects who rebelled from the academic Association of Austrian Artists in protest against their support for traditional artistic expression. The Secession Building is a pivotal monument in the development of modern architecture, rebelliously proclaiming a departure from historicist architectural styles. Olbich, a young architect who was working for Otto Wagner, does not use traditional historicist ornamentation - but incorporates other decorative motifs based on geometric and stylized naturalistic forms - and incorporates the archaic and the modern. Among the founders of the secession was Gustav Klimt (1862 Baumgarten bei Wien - 1918 Vienna) , and Frampton credits his influence on the design of the building to a sketch, especially the perforated metal dome made from gilded laurel leaves. In the basement of the building is Klimt’s own monumental wall cycle Beethoven Frieze (1902; image 9). Majolica House, Wienzeile Houses, Vienna, 1898-99. Architect: Otto Wagner (1841 Vienna - 1918 Vienna). Otto Wagner was one of the pivotal figures in the transition from historicism to rationalism, and so, in the very origin of Modernism itself. He was tremendously influential, through his work, his writing, and maybe even most impactful - through his students, several of whom who were individually innovative and influential in their own right. This particular group of three beautiful Wienzeile Houses demonstrates the moment of Wagner’s provocative and scandalous rejection of the then-academic orthodoxy that, as a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, he was very much part of - and the full acceptance of the Secession, the heady aesthetic revolution that he was to join and champion with his students. The Majolica House’s radically flat facade presents a canvas of floral abstraction, made of glazed earthenware tiles, by Wagner’s student Alois Ludwig (1872 Brno - 1969 Munich). Wagner also designed the adjacent buildings - the immediate neighbor has gilded stucco medallions designed by Wagner’s influential student and frequent collaborator, Koloman Moser (1868 Vienna - 1918 Vienna). Woonhuizen, kantoorpanden, winkels in heel Nederland werden rond 1900 uitbundig met tegels gedecoreerd. Het was dan ook een bloeiperiode van de Nederlandse ceramiekindustrie, die zelfs in het buitenland succes had en op de wereldtentoonstelling van 1900 in Parijs een aantal gouden medailles in de wacht sleepte. In deze lezing geeft Max Put voorbeelden van de tegelkunst van de Nederlandse Art Nouveau. Hij zal het o.a. hebben over welke soorten tegelwerk je kunt aantreffen aan gebouwen uit deze periode, door welke bedrijven het geproduceerd werd, wie de ontwerpers en/of schilders waren en wat de symboliek is van wat er zoal op tegeltableaus werd afgebeeld. English👇 Фамильная часовня-усыпальница семьи Захарьиных при Владимирской церкви в Куркино. В часовне захоронен Г.А. Захарьин (1829 - 1897) - русский терапевт, ученый, сторонник и популяризатор здорового образа жизни, а также его жена и сын. Возведением часовни занимался, на минуточку, сам Ф. Шехтель (семья была из богатых). На табличке снаружи год постройки указан как 1900, но в Википедии другие сведения: "Через два года после смерти Г. А. Захарьина его вдова и дочь заказали известному архитектору Ф.О. Шехтелю проект семейной часовни-склепа. В 1907—1908 годах часовня-усыпальница была построена и здесь был помещён прах известного врача". Непонятно, где именно расположен склеп - ни внутри часовни (туда заглянем в следующем посте), ни снаружи никаких спусков в подземную часть нет🤔 Видимых изменений - по крайней мере, внешних - за годы советской власти часовня не претерпела и сейчас выглядит практически так же, как на последнем старом фото (1920-х гг). Zakharyin (1829 - 1897) is buried in the chapel - Russian therapist, scientist, supporter and popularizer of a healthy lifestyle. It is not clear where exactly the crypt is located - neither inside the chapel (we'll look there in the next post), nor outside there are any descents into the underground part🤔 The chapel has not undergone any visible changes over the Soviet years and now looks almost like in the last old photo (1920s). It is therefore not surprising that it still symbolised hospitality in the Art Nouveau style around 1900. De Liefde Pharmacy is an Art Nouveau building in the Dutch city of Utrecht . It was commissioned by Johan de Liefde - a publisher who was the founder of the Utrechts Nieuwsblad. Built by architect R. Rijksen in 1903 - 1094, it was designated as a national monument in 2001. Located at Voorstraat 6, it is arguably the city's most famous Art Nouveau building. The building is asymmetrical with a hexagonal tower at the top right. It is largely constructed in white brick. On the ground floor there is a shop front in natural stone with a skylight in a large arch . Found on Reddit of all places - Frederich von Poschinger vase c.1900 😍 Someone posted this on Reddit as a piece too expensive for them to buy, but it was right up my alley! I only have one other uranium glass jugendstil piece. I asked the OP where they found this and it was at a tiny town antique store 1,000 miles away but only 30 minutes from where my dad lives. He grabbed it and shipped it to me. I'm so happy I absolutely love it! It's opalescent pink encased in copper with turquoise cabochons. 12 inches tall. I'm pretty sure there are a LOT of art nouveau uranium glass pieces out there but no one ever checks them because they are such collectible pieces that no one cares if they are uranium or not. I would still like to add more to my collection so I think I'm gonna start asking sellers about it.
