It's pika season!! Tomorrow I'm working again with Friends of the Columbia Gorge helping middle schoolers discover the cutest mammal on the planet! If you find yourself between a rock & a hard place, just think about 'what would a pika do'....and you'll find your way out in no time at all!!

A nice furry PIKA on top of a rock. "Ochotona" est le nom scientifique du PIKA, et son surnom est "lièvre criard" : son cri est un OUIIIIKKKKKK et c'est un petit animal adorable, curieux et relativement peu farouche. On ne le trouve qu'en Amérique du Nord et en Asie. Tout en n'étant pas farouche, il se déplace à la vitesse de l'éclair à travers les éboulis de rochers dans lesquels il vit. Il fait aussi des réserves d'herbes et de petites fleurs pour les jours de grand froid. 💗 #pika #lievrecriard #ochotona #wildlife_perfection #wildlifephotography #rockrabbit #americanpika #nuts_about_wildlife #naturephotography #mammalsofwyoming #beartoothmountains

This year, you could visit the Columbia River Gorge to take in its breathtaking views, its unique geology, its brilliant wildflowers. Or...you could go in quest of cute! The Gorge’s cutest creature must be the American pika, a relative of the rabbit that resembles nothing so much as a fat, fuzzy potato with mouse like ears and stubby legs. Compounding the pika’s cute quotient is a cry like a squeak toy. Where in the Gorge can you locate such cuteness? That’s just what Cascades Pika Watch, a citizen-science effort coordinated by the Oregon Zoo, wants you to help find...Read the full story online at westcoasttraveller.com - Link in Bio! Ahhh the great American Pika! Pronounced pie-kuh, also nicknamed the “whistling hare” or the “rock rabbit” 🤘🏼 Albeit cute round balls of fluff they’re hard core! These alpine dwelling mammals are tough to survive harsh winters and still withstand warm summers in the mountain sun. This drawing was the first animal I knew I wanted to highlight with this series. Although often heard before they are seen they’re staples in the alpine animal community and climate change has put the American pika in great danger. As the planet warms, many species shift their habitat toward the poles or higher up in the mountains to escape the heat. But because the pika is already an alpine-dwelling creature, and there is no higher territory for it to escape to. I paired the Pike with a dragonfly friend because this flying friend is one of the strongest winged insects! The “globe skinner” dragonfly’s have the longest migration of any insect—11,000 miles back and forth across the Indian Ocean. And scientists theorize that during the Paleozoic era high oxygen levels helped dragonflies to grow to monster size. Hopefully his new friend can give this Pika strength and lift him up through these tough climate conditions! #americanpika #strongwings #savetheanimals #alpinemammals #pika #climatechangeanimals #whistlinghare #rockrabbit #dragonflies #aninmalillustration #animalcharcoal #mountainanimals #montanaart #mountainlifeart #mountainlifestyle

Wildlife Wednesday Spotlight: The American Pika 🏔️🐇 (Ochotona princeps) Habitat: American pikas are small mammals found in alpine regions of western North America. They inhabit rocky slopes, talus fields, and boulder-strewn areas at high elevations, typically above the tree line. Their preference for cool, rocky habitats makes them well-adapted to survive in harsh alpine environments. Nutrition: These herbivorous mammals primarily feed on grasses, herbs, and sedges. Their diet consists mainly of vegetation collected during the summer months, which they store in haypiles to sustain them through the winter when food is scarce. Their efficient foraging behavior allows them to gather and store enough food to survive during the colder months. Appearance: American pikas are small, round-bodied mammals with short limbs, rounded ears, and a short, blunt muzzle. They have dense fur that provides insulation against the cold mountain temperatures. Their fur ranges in color from grayish-brown to reddish-brown, blending in with their rocky surroundings. Natural Predators: While pikas face threats from aerial predators such as hawks and eagles, their main predators are terrestrial carnivores like weasels, foxes, and coyotes. These predators hunt pikas in their rocky habitats, preying on individuals or raiding their haypiles. Vocalizations: American pikas are known for their distinctive high-pitched calls, which they use to communicate with each other. These calls serve as warning signals to alert nearby individuals of potential predators or intruders in their territory. Their vocalizations play a crucial role in maintaining social cohesion within pika communities. Fun Facts: Pikas are adapted to cold, high-altitude environments and are sensitive to heat. They are susceptible to overheating in temperatures above 77°F (25°C) and may retreat to cooler areas or seek refuge in their burrows during hot weather. Despite their small size, pikas are considered ecosystem engineers, as their foraging and haying activities can influence plant communities and nutrient cycling in alpine ecosystems. #americanpika #wildlife #conservation #conservationist #animal #follow #fyp #viral

It's #WildlifeWednesday! Today we are highlighting the American Pika, a tough little critter who thrives high in the Rockies. Pika populations are well distributed throughout Colorado's mountains where their main habitat lies at and above the timberline. They are one of the few mammals that can survive their entire lives in this terrain! The pika's habitat is so high on the mountain that, unlike other mountain species, they have nowhere higher to go in a warming climate. They are trapped at the top making them vulnerable to vegetation changes, reduced winter snowpack, increased temperatures, the invasion of new pests and predators, and more. They are classified as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need under the Colorado State Wildlife Action Plan. #Pika #Wildlife #Colorado #ColoradoWildlife #CWF #Conservation #WildlifeConservation #AmericanPika #RockyMountains

My friend @deirdredenaliphotography turned me onto pika with her field work in the San Juan Mountains several years ago. I've only ever seen one a couple times and got super lucky with this shot while I was hiking the Cascade Canyon Trail in Grand Teton National Park back in May 2021, but now I know so much more about them and their habitat/behaviors and look forward to photographing them again one day. They are cute and adorable little creatures. Have you had a chance to see one? Listen for them in talus slopes in the subalpine if you want to catch a glimpse of them. For my Death Valley folks here, you can actually pick up one of her products in our general store called Cold Case, which is a thermal phone protector, and I believe you can find her pika book in the Rocky Mountain National Park gift shop. Give her a follow and help support her conservation projects! #pika #grandteton #americanpika

I am using Pika Thursday to make an announcement. International Pika Day will be on July 24th starting this year. Why July 24th? That was the day that the Ila Pika was discovered in 1983 by Li Weidong in the Tian Shan Mountains in Xinjiang, China ( look them up, they are really cute). It is also a good day for seeing pikas in the high country. So put it on your calendar! Today is World Wildlife Day from the worldwidelifeday.org website... What is World Wildlife Day? On 20 December 2013 at the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), March 3 was declared United Nations World Wildlife Day (WWD). This day holds significance as the day that the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was signed in 1973. The UNGA Resolution designated the CITES Secretariat as the facilitator for the global observance of this special day for wildlife on the UN calendar. UN World Wildlife Day has now become the global annual event dedicated to wildlife. People everywhere rely on wildlife and biodiversity-based resources to meet our needs - from food, to fuel, medicines, housing, and clothing. For us to enjoy the benefits and the beauty that nature brings us and our planet, people have been working together to make sure ecosystems are able to thrive and plant and animal species are able to exist for future generations. So, let’s celebrate wildlife and the important conservation work being done around the world! #wildlife #colorado #wildlifeincolorado #howspecialiscolorado #estespark #community #nationalparks #rockymountainnationalpark #elk #blackbears #bighornsheep #borrowingowl #trout #coloradochipmunk #pronghorn #bison #mountaingoat #americanpika #foxes

These guys aren't rodents; they're more closely related to hares and rabbits! They "sing" and squeak at high volume to communicate with each other, and these calls can be heard while hiking at high altitude in Colorado's mountains. Thanks for being here! American Pika Despite their cuddly appearance, American pikas are among North America’s toughest animals. Pikas are one of the few mammals that can survive their entire lives in alpine terrain. Pikas have short, stout bodies with big, round ears and do not have a visible tail. Pikas reach a size of about seven to eight inches (18 to 20 centimeters) in length. The American pika has a brown and black coloration, which is meant to camouflage them among rocks. Pika fur is thick to keep them warm in the winter. During the summer, they put on a much lighter coat of fur—however, the hair is still thick enough that a pika might overheat if exposed to very high heat for long periods of time. #americanpika #pika #medicinelake #jaspernationalpark #nikond800e #nikon500mmf56epf #romwpyon @romtoronto
