Frank D. Peregory 29th Infantry Division 116th Infantry Regiment He was born April 10, 1916, at Esmont, Virginia. In May, he joined Company K (Monticello Guard) of the 116th Infantry Regiment of the Virginia National Guard at Charlottesville. He moved with it to Fort Meade and the unit began training. While patrolling a beach in North Carolina, he rescued a drowning comrade. In recognition of his action and disregard of danger to himself, he was awarded the Soldier’s Medal, the highest non-combat award that a soldier can receive for saving a life. On D-Day, he landed on Omaha Beach and his unit made its way to the town of Grandcamp-Maisy, by June 8. While his unit advanced on the German defenses, the leading elements of his unit began receiving fire from German forces. Numerous attempts to neutralize the enemy position by supporting artillery and tank fire had proved ineffective until he risked his own life by advancing up the hill under heavy enemy fire. When he encountered a squad of enemy riflemen, he attacked them with hand grenades and his bayonet, killed 8 and forced 3 to surrender. He then continued along the trench, forcing more than 32 German soldiers to surrender. Six days later, Peregory was killed while fighting in the hedgerows. #americandday #omahabeach #omahabeachmemorial #omahabeachnormandy #normandy #normandie #dday #ddayveteran #ddayanniversary #normandy1944 #ww2veteran #debarquementnormandie #normandylandings #ww2reenactment #usarmy #usarmysoldier #usarmyveteran #savingprivateryan

Jimmie W. Monteith Jr 1st Infantry Division 16th Infantry Regiment He was born on July 1, 1917, in Low Moor, Virginia. In March 1942, he was commissioned 2nd lieutenant. In April 1943 he was shipped to Algeria, where he joined the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One). The division moved to Sicily in July 1943, and he received a field promotion to 1st lieutenant during the campaign. On D-Day he landed with the initial assault waves under heavy enemy fire. Without regard to his own personal safety he continually moved up and down the beach reorganizing men for further assault. He then led the assault over a narrow protective ledge and across the flat, exposed terrain to the comparative safety of a cliff. Retracing his steps across the field to the beach, he moved over to where two tanks were buttoned up and blind under violent enemy artillery and machinegun fire. Completely exposed to the intense fire, He led the tanks on foot through a minefield and into firing positions. Under his direction several enemy positions were destroyed. He then rejoined his company and under his leadership his men captured an advantageous position on the hill. Supervising the defense of his newly won position against repeated vicious counterattacks, he continued to ignore his own personal safety, repeatedly crossing the 200 or 300 yards of open terrain under heavy fire to strengthen links in his defensive chain. He was killed by enemy fire and received the Medal of Honor posthumously. #americandday #omahabeach #omahabeachmemorial #omahabeachnormandy #normandy #normandie #dday #ddayveteran #ddayanniversary #normandy1944 #ww2veteran #debarquementnormandie #normandylandings #ww2reenactment #usarmy #usarmysoldier #usarmyveteran

William J. Guarnere Sr 101st Airborne Division 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment He was born in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 28, 1923. He joined the Citizens Military Training Camp program during the Great Depression, gaining entrance at age 15 because his mother told the government her son was two years older. On 31 August 1942, he enlisted in the military and started training at Camp Toccoa, Georgia. He was assigned to Easy Company. In the early hours of June 6, he joined lieutenant Richard Winters and a few others trying to secure the small village of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont and the exit of causeway number 2 leading from the beach. As they headed south, they heard a German platoon coming to bring supplies and took up ambush positions. Winters told the men to wait for his order to fire, but Guarnere, claiming he thought Winters might be hesitant to kill, opened fire immediately, killing most of the unit. Later that morning, he also joined Winters in assaulting a group of four 105 mm guns at Brecourt Manor. #americandday #utahbeachnormandy #normandy #normandie #dday #ddayveteran #ddayanniversary #normandy1944 #ww2veteran #debarquementnormandie #normandylandings #ww2reenactment #usarmy #usarmysoldier #usarmyveteran #bandofbrothers

James M. Gavin 82nd Airborne Division He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 22, 1907. At the end of March 1924, aged just 17, he spoke to a sergeant in the Army. Since he was under 18, he needed parental consent to enlist. Knowing that his adoptive parents would not consent, he told the recruiter he was an orphan. The recruiter took him and a few other underage boys, who were orphans, to a lawyer who declared himself their guardian and signed the parental consent paperwork. On April 1, 1924, he was sworn into the army. He arrived at West Point in the summer of 1925, three months after his 18th birthday and 14 months after enlistment. On the application forms, he indicated his age as 21 (instead of 18) to hide the fact that he was not old enough to join the army when he did. He began training at the new Parachute School at Fort Benning in August 1941. After graduating in August, he served in an experimental unit. In August 1942, he became the commanding officer of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning which had been activated shortly before on July 6. He was, aged just 35, promoted to colonel shortly thereafter. On December 9, 1943, Gavin was promoted to brigadier general to and became the assistant division commander of the 82nd Airborne Division. On D-Day he was part of Mission Boston. The intended objective was to secure an area of roughly 10 square miles on either side of the Merderet River. They were to capture the town of Sainte-Mère-Eglise, a crucial communications crossroad behind Utah Beach. #americandday #utahbeachnormandy #normandy #normandie #dday #ddayveteran #ddayanniversary #normandy1944 #ww2veteran #debarquementnormandie #normandylandings #ww2reenactment #usarmy #usarmysoldier #usarmyveteran #82ndairborne #82ndairbornedivision

Hundreds of young m’en would never return home having given their lives as the last full measure of devotion to the cause of liberty. Many a mother, father, wife or child would never see their son, husband, father again except in pictures or memories, while many others spend the rest of their lives wounded in body or mind. Band of brothers (2001) The story of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army. S1.E2 - Day of Days In the very early hours of the D-Day invasion, Easy Company along with thousands of other Allied paratroopers land behind enemy lines in Normandy. In the chaos of the jump however, they are spread far and wide with many landing far from their expected drop zone. Lt. Winters assembles the few men they can find and slowly make their way to their rendezvous point. As the men straggle in, they also must adjust such as when Malarkey meets a German soldier who grew up in Oregon. Easy's Company commander is still missing so Winters is left in charge and is ordered to take out a German artillery bunker that is wreaking havoc with the troops landing on the beach. They do so with great efficiency and are rewarded with several Bronze and Silver Stars and the Distinguished Service Cross for Winters. #americandday #omahabeach #pointeduhoc #utahbeachnormandy #dday #ddayveteran #ddayanniversary #june61944 #june6th1944 #6june1944 #6juin1944 #ww2veteran #debarquementnormandie #normandylandings #ww2reenactment #bandofbrothers

Band of brothers (2001) The story of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army. S1.E1 - Currahee In 1942, men from across the USA are in Camp Toccoa, Georgia to undergo paratrooper training. For the men of 'E' Easy Company the training is particularly difficult as a result of their demanding commander, Captain Herbert Sobel. He drives them incessantly to excel, canceling their weekend passes on a whim. His favorite chore is to have the men undertake a run up a hill known as Currahee. While the men are fit and ready for battle, thanks to Sobel, he has unfortunately shown himself to be a weak tactical commander. Once in England, and knowing they will soon be invading the Continent, the sergeants stage a rebellion. Sobel's excesses come to an end when Lt. Dick Winters requests a court martial rather than accept punishment for one of Sobel's lame charges. #americandday #omahabeach #pointeduhoc #utahbeachnormandy #dday #ddayveteran #ddayanniversary #june61944 #june6th1944 #6june1944 #6juin1944 #ww2veteran #debarquementnormandie #normandylandings #ww2reenactment #bandofbrothers

This pathfinder unit parachuted into Normandy in advance of the rest of the division in order to mark out the landing zones, and these officers, (left to right, - Lieutenants, Bobby de la Tour, Don Wells, John Vischer and Bob Midwood), were among the first Allied troops to land in France.
