A really nice @dtwshots airport visit Friday night with two special moments. An 11-year-old stopped by with his Dad and was excited to learn about @allianceoftherapydogs junior handlers. He plans to train with his dog next year. My Dad told him about my brothers serving as junior handlers for years. On a sad note, a longtime employee who follows me shared that his father passed away two months ago. I was glad we connected since we hadn’t seen him for a while. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. The most of any biosecurity detector dog in the country! 🦮 Vespa’s results are an example of why detector dogs are highly regarded as a detection tool for biosecurity. This year Vespa ranged from sniffing out biosecurity risk items like beef burgers, to the smallest of items such as seeds. 🔍 Vespa detected 278 items that could have carried foot and mouth disease. If an outbreak were to occur it would have cost the Australian economy an estimated $80 billion. 🐾 After a hard day busting biosecurity risk items at our borders, Vespa likes to put her paws up and unwind. Tally’s first day as a therapy dog at the airport. We took it very slowly. I stopped and stood still many times throughout the facility, starting with the busy curbside check-in. Tally would walk around me, taking in the new sights, sounds and smells. She was very interested in looking out the windows at the activity on the ramp. Planes, vehicles and baggage handlers were all fascinating. Her first four therapy visits have all been in hospitals. This was quite a change, seeing hundreds of people at once, high ceilings, PA announcements, TSA checkpoints, door alarms and vehicles beeping. Tally took it all in stride and went right to work creating smiles. She quickly understood the idea of standing or sitting between two seated people to speed up the visits. She showed initiative in positioning herself to be more readily accessible and in maneuvering around luggage. This was one of our many breaks in a quiet corner to relax from the busy pace. Surprisingly, Tally did not want to drink any water until the very end. Many passengers and staff expressed their appreciation of our volunteer efforts. We are particularly appreciated on days like this when flights are delayed and cancelled. When Tally was visiting with someone, I would scan the room and inevitably saw eager faces thinking “Pick me, pick me!” And yes, she does match the carpet. #aussiedoodle #aussiedoodles #dog #dogs #airportdog

Casey and I had our second flight ever this evening! Casey did amazing with q crowded TSA at Dulles Airport. He set off the security machine, so I had to take off all of his gear (collar and leash included). The police officer asked if he was reliable with voice commands, and I said yes because of all of his practice for the various AKC CGC tests! I had him “stay” as I walked through and then called him through, which he did very well. We even saw a few pet dogs at Dulles and the Syracuse airport, and Casey was great at completely ignoring them, which made me so so happy! No one questioned his legitimacy as a service dog, which I was extremely grateful for. We even got a whole row to ourselves on the plane😱😱 The flight was a little under an hour, so that was a good duration for his second airplane experience. There is a before and after picture when we realized there was going to be no one else sitting next to us😂😂 Casey did fantastically with his loose leash walking on a flat collar in a very crowded airport, which amazed me and made me so proud! He also got to ride in several different elevators today. He did have a little bit of trouble settling at the beginning and during the middle of our flight, but he was eventually able to settle after 10-20 minutes. Overall, I was very stressed about our flight departing from Dulles; however, the trip went as smoothly as possible. It was good to be back home!
