What if I told you there is a SINGLE mindset shift you could make that has been proven to increase your... 🧠 Motivation 🧠 Resilience 🧠 Persistence 🧠 Well-being Too good to be true, right?!? Wrong! That is the power of MINDSET!💪🏻 What in the world am I talking about? Well… Ever feel like your brain has a built-in "limited edition" label? ❌ That's a FIXED MINDSET talking!😣 A FIXED MINDSET believes you're born with a set amount of smarts, skills, and talents, and that’s it! No upgrades, learning, or modifications possible. Booooring! But also - UNTRUE! The truth is that your brain is more like a video game, with every challenge an opportunity to LEVEL UP! Every stumble is a stepping stone, every mistake a chance to learn. When we have a GROWTH MINDSET🪴 we embrace this reality and see failure and mistakes as data and opportunities to learn rather than indications of our inability. Think of it like this: When you work out at the gym, it hurts! But that pain means you're building muscle, right? The same goes for our brains! Pushing past our comfort zone feels uncomfortable, but that discomfort- it’s a sign that we are GROWING! What mountains can you and your ADHD brain scale if you embrace a growth mindset?⛰️🧠

Let's Talk About Home Organization⬇️🏠 Getting organized, and particularly staying organized, is difficult for ADHD brains, who tend to struggle with executive functioning (the basis of all organizational tasks). This is why it’s essential to use ADHD-friendly and ADHD-crafted strategies that actually work with the way your brain naturally works instead of against it! Some of my favorite organization strategies include: Visual Storage and Labels 🏷️ ADHD brains have a unique relationship with object permanence so when things get put into drawers or bins, they seem to disappear from our brains. Clear storage containers and labels are huge for this - making it obvious where things should go when they need to be returned. DOOM Baskets 🧺 DOOM baskets stand for “Didn’t Organize, Only Moved,” and they are, ideally, large, attractive, and covered containers for any and everything that gets out of order in your day. Then, once a week, you create a prompt and schedule to go through, categorize, and return everything that’s piled up. Chore Charts 📊 Starting a chore chart is a great way to stay organized, keep track, and remind everyone to keep on top of the chores. ADHD brains are fishbowl brains- they don’t think of things until they are prompted to do so. Therefore, having a visual chore chart is useful for keeping on top of chores. ‼️And Remember - Organization can be extra hard for ADHD brains. BUT! It’s not a character flaw. It’s not about being lazy. And you’re not the only one! Share your favorite home organization strategies below to help out fellow ADHDers⬇️

Ever feel like you opened Instagram to check a message, then suddenly you're an expert on llama grooming and the history of the spork? (We've all been there…) 🤦🏼‍♀️ Social media these days is basically a black hole for our attention spans. Hyperlinks, tagged pictures, pop-up ads - it's all designed to keep us jumping from one shiny object to the next. A quick check turns into an hour-long rabbit hole of dog tricks and sourdough starter tutorials (don't judge, we've all been there!). No wonder our focus feels like a goldfish's memory! But hold on! Before you blame yourself for the struggle, here's the truth: social media is sneaky. Those platforms are masters at manipulation. Their algorithms study your every click and like, feeding you a personalized content stream that's practically irresistible! Social media is designed to… ➡️ Distract us ➡️ Keep us coming back ➡️ Fulfill our need for connection The good news? You're not powerless! 🤯Struggling with perfectionism and ADHD? You're not alone! Research shows that perfectionism in ADHD often stems from fear of failure and a desire for control. But breaking the cycle is possible. Here are some tips to help: 🔄 Start with acceptance: Embrace who you are and acknowledge your strengths and imperfections. Research indicates that self-acceptance can significantly improve mental well-being. 🎯 Aim for progress, not perfection: Shifting your mindset can reduce stress and anxiety. What happens to our brains and bodies when we get angry? ANGER is our body’s natural response to THREAT‼️ Back when we had to be cautious of wild animals, we developed the ability to sense and respond to danger as a survival tactic. When our body senses a THREAT, we enter fight or flight mode to either flee or fight it off. Some of the PHYSICAL processes that occur when we are in fight/flight include… ▶️ Heart Rate Increasing ▶️ Shallow Breathing ▶️ Muscles Tensing ▶️ Digestion Slowing ▶️ Body Sweating and MANY more! Do you struggle with anger? What physical symptoms do YOU notice when in fight or flight mode? Tell us in the comments below!

The interrupting struggle is real for the ADHD brain😫 WHY? This is because the ADHD brain struggles to regulate itself. Its actual functions often work perfectly but it has a hard time turning those functions on or off at the right time (among other regulating functions). The impulse or desire to add to a conversation is no different and the ADHD brain struggles to wait its turn. Do you have a hard time keeping yourself from interrupting? 1️⃣ The most important first step is to take care of yourself! 2️⃣ Next, before an important interaction where it is important that you limit the interruptions, try to take that other perspective and think through how they will feel if interrupted. 3️⃣ Finally, if you do interrupt- own it quickly, honestly, and without too much drama. It’s not the worst thing in the world! At the end of the day, remember that interrupting is a sign of excitement, passion, and engagement and is not done with malintent. Remember this if someone interrupts you. If you find yourself interrupting others, explain this to them so they can interpret it for what it is - excitement and engagement! ➡️ Try it out. Have a conversation with your partner - how do they feel when you interrupt? Do they know what it feels like for you? Share with us below!

Parenting with ADHD: The Land of Extremes 📈 Parenting with ADHD can feel like a volume knob cranked to 11, then suddenly stuck on mute. 🔇 While neurotypical brains operate more like a dimmer switch, ADHD brains operate in the extremes. Sort of like an on/off switch! 💡🎚️ One minute you’re building the coolest Lego castle ever, the next you’re lost in thought. But here’s the good news! This intense focus is something that can actually benefit our relationships. When you’re engaged, your child gets your full, undivided attention. They feel seen, heard, and loved. Kids flourish under this focused attention. ❤️ However, the “off” switch can be a challenge. You might miss subtle cues from your kids, leaving them feeling disconnected. The key is understanding your brain and working with it! How does on/off regulation impact your parenting? Share below to help out fellow ADHD parents!

Why oh why do we put things off until the very last minute? Asking for a friend (who may or may not be wearing yesterday's clothes because laundry folding is SO next week's problem) 🤦🏼‍♀️ Turns out, everyone does it – even those neurotypical brains. But for our sparkly ADHD brains?!? Well, procrastination can be a whole other beast! The white coats tell us that: 🧠 ADHD brains procrastinate more frequently (I know! Cue the shock and awe!!!) 🧠 ADHD brains pay the price of procrastination more often (whomp, whomp) So all that ⬆️ is about as shocking as finding out your couch doesn't actually double as a trampoline. But you know that ACTUALLY kind of revelatory thing those smarty-pants have found? Procrastination is actually not about time management at all!!!! It's about EMOTION regulation! Yup! You read that right! We procrastinate because we start feeling pesky feelings like: 🧠 Boredom 🧠 Frustration 🧠 Confusion 🧠 Disinterest 🧠 Shame It's not a laziness thing. It's not a time management thing. It's not always even a motivation thing. Often it's an EMOTION thing! Any other master procrastinators out there?🙋🏼‍♀️ What are your best tips for getting things done (eventually)? Together we can bust through this emotional wall and get stuff done!

Anger is normal, and you're not alone! ADHD brains can struggle with managing that anger. Want to know a QUICK way to overwhelm your sensory system?! . . . . Let CLUTTER build up around your house. 😬 Let's break this down: Clutter Overwhelm ➡️Overwhelm caused by having TOO MUCH stuff. We're probably all guilty of this to an extent, but the impact and magnitude of clutter can be felt more intensely by those with ADHD. You see...ADHD brains struggle to finish a task to completion. Practically, this looks like: 🔸 Bagsdropped at the front door 🔸Keys hanging in the lock 🔸60-80% finished projects collecting dust in the corner All this stuff can overwhelm your sensory system and make it hard to sort your way through your tasks or your day. 🥴 Do you feel constantly overwhelmed by all your clutter? Oh distraction… A near and dear “friend” (or frenemy) of the ADHD brain. But - just because distraction may be a natural tendency does NOT mean that it has to be your day-to-day reality. There are tools and strategies that can help! Once of my favorites is "TIME BLOCKING." Time blocking ➡️a technique where you break your day up into blocks of time and assign each block to one specific task. Why is this helpful? 👉Time blocking allows you to focus your energy on one task at a time and spend less time switching back and forth between tasks. This means that instead of multitasking all day long, you are dedicating chunks of time to single tasks. By assigning specialized times for specific tasks every day, time blocking helps you: 🔸Stay organized 🔸Avoid distractions 🔸Make the most out of your day Do YOU practice time blocking? When it comes to prioritizing tasks and *actually* getting stuff done... ⭐A brain dump is a great place to start! ⭐ Put everything on paper. (Yes, I do mean EVERYTHING.) I want it all, in no particular order (unless it helps spur your thought process). Don't worry if you forget things...you will! 😉And that’s ok. A good task list (which is what this will evolve into) is a living breathing thing. You can’t ever mess it up - you just keep adding and subtracting. So don’t shoot for perfection here- just unload as many things as you can think of. Have you ever tried brain dumping? How was your experience? You read that right! Your justice sensitivity can actually become a STRENGTH rather than a weakness! "But how, Marcy?!" It’s all about UNDERSTANDING your circles of influence, control, and concern. Let's break this down, shall we? 1️⃣CIRCLE OF CONTROL 👉the things you have true control over (i.e our actions, choice, and bodies) 2️⃣CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE👉things that we don’t have control over but we do have some ability to influence (i.e family, nearby situations, friends, etc.) 3️⃣CIRCLE OF CONCERN👉things that no matter what we do, we have little to no control or influence over (i.e weather, politics, global situations, the future, etc.) Sure, your "justice sensitivity" may be alarmed by situations within ALL THREE circles. Your little alarm bells might be ringing because of family issue, personal stressors, AND political situations that grind your gears. I know what you're wondering..."How on earth is that a GOOD thing?!" I promise, it can be...as long as you focus on ONE IMPORTANT KEY: ✨Stay within the first two circles: CONTROL and INFLUENCE.✨ (That’s where the good stuff happens. 😉) ➡️If you focus and act within your circles of control and influence, not only will you be happier and more successful— but you can increase your impact over time. Why? Because this is where you actually have the capacity to make a meaningful difference! So when you star to feel sensitive about a perceived injustice --- if you're focusing within your circles of control and influence, you can actually DO SOMETHING about it! The Executive Functioning System ➡️Your brain's symphony conductor. This is part of the brain that tells the others when to start, when to stop, to work harder, to ease up, get faster or go slower. The conductor makes sure everyone is on the same page, is playing the same song and he leads the group so that they can work together. What happens when that conductor is exhausted and asleep at the podium? Well, it isn't pretty. Probably not something you'd pay money to listen to, that's for sure. This is executive dysfunction ➡️a conductor that's asleep on the job. In order to make sure you avoid this cacophony - it's important to properly care for your brain's executive functioning system. Give these tips a try today! Tell me…how do YOU experience executive dysfunction in your life?? Follow for more ADHD friendly tips and strategies.

Being a new mom is HARD. Yes, it's beautiful! It's a time filled with precious memories and adorable baby snuggles... BUT - it's also really challenging!! Boobs-leaking, tears-flowing, I-have-no-idea-what-I’m-doing, I want to scream (and probably will) kind of hard. 😬 Being a new mom with ADHD?!?!? Oh, my lordy! That right there is reaching epic, superhero levels of difficulty! Here's why: A lot happens when you have new creatures to care for. All of a sudden, your entire life has been transformed. There are: ➡️Hormonal changes ➡️Lifestyle changes ➡️Relationship changes ➡️Additional responsibilities and demands Basically, it's the perfect storm for an ADHD brain. ⛈️ If you were previously able to "get by" with coping strategies you've learned along the way, new motherhood can reveal new things about ourselves. You may notice deficits in attention or feelings of intense overwhelm that you previously ignored. These new revelations...they don't simply impact ourselves (they impact our babies too.) For many women, this new self-knowledge combined with a desire to be our best for our kids is the motivation we need to pursue a potential diagnosis. So for all you Moms that no longer qualify as “new” - give yourself a giant pat on the back and hug- you did it, you got through!! 🙌 And for those just about to enter this battlezone or currently in the trenches? Well, first: Know that we are all here, cheering you on every step of the way. And second: If you find yourself wondering, "Could I have ADHD?" remember: it never hurts to ask questions and seek support. ❤️

Sensory overload in the ADHD brain. Let’s talk about it! So you have a brain more likely to get overloaded. But what does that mean? What’s it look like when your brain’s processing system goes into meltdown mode? This graphic shows a few of the ways that sensory overload can manifest for the ADHD brain. How do YOU experience this? Share in the comments below.

Did you know... Simply crossing something off your to-do list actually gives your brain a little shot of dopamine. It’s true! Every time you complete a task on your list, your brain rewards you with a boost of happy juice! But there’s a catch… Because not all to-do lists are created equal. They can be too long, too unfocused, or too scattered to help you achieve your goals. (We've all been there.) When this happens, it creates more chaos and overwhelm—rather than helping you out! SO...what makes a great to-do list? One that works FOR you, rather than AGAINST you. USE THE BUCKET SYSTEM. Buckets are smaller, categorized to-do lists) of things that you do at specific times based on your energy levels. For example, you may create three different lists (or buckets): 🔸High Energy Tasks 🔸Moderate Energy Tasks 🔸Low Energy Tasks Separate your tasks into the appropriate energy level bucket. This will allow you to tackle your tasks more strategically and effectively. Tell me... What is ONE "high energy" task on your list today?

Too. Much. Input. This can look like: 🔹Flashing lights 🔹Harsh lighting 🔹Loud music 🔹Loud, repetitive noises 🔹Obnoxious odors 🔹Itchy sweaters 🔹Dry skin 🔹Tight clothing I think you get the picture. And while many people get overloaded from time to time, your ADHD makes it much more likely to happen to you. How do you handle sensory overload when it happens in your life? Share you stories and tips in the comments below.

Let's talk about REJECTION SENSITIVITY. Basically, rejection sensitivity disorder (RSD) is exactly what it sounds like...feeling intense emotional pain connected to experiences of failure or rejection. This is extremely common for those with #adhd - in fact, ADHD is one of the 5️⃣ brain types most likely to be sensitive to rejection. ✨ADHD brains sensitive to rejection don't just FEEL that rejection (or criticism) more intensely, they also anxiously expect it.✨ This means, they are constantly on the lookout for rejection, believing it's "only a matter of time." SO, if your brain is expecting rejection, it's going to find it. It just knows it's going to happen, and so when something kind of ambiguous happens- something that could be read a couple of different ways- a rejection-sensitive brain will say- "See!! I was right! They do hate me!" As you can imagine...RSD can be problematic when it comes to maintaining healthy relationships. Do you (or your loved one) experience rejection sensitivity? How do you handle it?

There is there a lot of overlap in Anxiety and ADHD- both in terms of the symptoms and the brain functions that create those symptoms. The two conditions show up together with incredible frequency. In fact, between 50-55% of adults with ADHD also have an anxiety disorder. And in my clinical experience, a huge majority of the remaining 45-50% may not meet the full criteria for an anxiety disorder but still, show significant anxiety symptoms. Do you have ADHD and experience symptoms of anxiety? Which did you become aware of first? I'd love to hear about it!

Harness the Power of Visual Cues for Your ADHD Brain 😍🧠 Using visual cues can be such a game changer when it comes to supporting our ADHD brains. Read on for five ways you can use visual cues in your day-to-day life to help reduce the demand on your executive functions. (Yes, please!) 1️⃣ Engage Your Senses: Bright colors and visual cues provide the extra stimulation your ADHD brain loves to capture and hold your attention. Use color-coded calendars, stickers, or bright highlighters to make important information more engaging and memorable. 2️⃣ Save Time: Color-coded calendars, sticky notes, and folders offer clear, quick organization. Separate colors assigned to different tasks allow you to glance at your calendar and know what's coming up next without having to search for important information. 3️⃣ Enhance Comprehension and Retention: Visual cues support comprehension and retention. By finding ways to represent information visually with symbols or images, you help your brain process and internalize what you're learning more effectively. 4️⃣ Planning and Organization: Visual timelines and color-coded calendars facilitate clearer planning and organization. You can identify double bookings, see how you’re spending time, and ensure you're using it in alignment with your priorities. 5️⃣ Avoid Overstimulation: While visual cues are powerful, be careful not to go overboard because when everything is highlighted, nothing stands out. Be intentional when using colors and reminders to ensure they truly catch your eye and help you remember what matters most. How do you use visual cues in your day-to-day? Let’s face it… ADHD brains 🧠 crank the volume of emotions up really HIGH! This can be GREAT when it comes to pleasant emotions (I.e joy, excitement, etc) but can absolutely wreak havoc when those more difficult emotions pop up. 🥴 Why is this? ⭐️ADHD brains go all in or all out. ⭐️ In other words, they can’t pay “just a little” attention to anything. They either feel it big or not at all. Do you relate to this? Which emotions become the biggest for you? Looking for ADHD tips and strategies to help in your life? Let’s talk about it! The neurotypical norm of our world tells us all the neurotypical ways of being are right and good. So, we try to fit in, avoid negative reactions, and protect ourselves from others' judgment by covering over, hiding, or otherwise masking the ways that our ADHD brains make us different. This is normal and occasionally even necessary. Ex ➡️ forcing yourself to sit still in the annual review meeting with the board But it’s also exhausting, isolating, and can hurt our relationships.🥱 Friendships are built on knowing and seeing each other. And while that happens gradually over time, eventually, it can start to block friendships from developing when we don’t show up as our whole and complete selves (missed text messages and all), causing us to have a bunch of casual friends but no one who gets our complete package. Sound relatable? Tell me…do you find yourself consciously or subconsciously “masking” your ADHD in relationships? Share your experiences below!

I’ll be honest with you… FRIENDSHIP is one of the most common struggles I encounter in my clincal practice. As it turns out, so many adults with ADHD find building and maintaining good quality friendships to be, well, difficult. AND YET…we rarely hear about this. Let’s talk about it, shall we? HOW exactly does ADHD make friendship harder? ➡️First, we have the twin frenemies of making friends: social anxiety and rejection sensitivity keeping us from building our crew. ➡️Next, we have the logistical nightmare of maintaining communication with those friends who have actually managed to burst through our protective walls of social isolation. ➡️Finally, masking comes in to keep us from deepening those connections we work so hard to make and maintain. Not all ADHD brains struggle with each step of the equation, but most folks that I know grapple with at least one– In spite of being some of the best friends around! Tell me… How do you see your ADHD impact your friendships? Any tips you’d like to offer? Want more?! I’ve written a whole blog post unpacking the top 5 ways ADHD gets in the way of adult friendships. Let’s face it. Time is finite. There will ALWAYS be more to do than is time to do it. It's time to accept the facts: 🔥It will not all get done. I repeat: It will not all get done. This means we need to figure out the MOST IMPORTANT thing to do and ignore the rest. That’s a whole lot easier said than done, though- right?!? It’s rife with executive functioning cost: problem-solving, decision making, ordering- each one of these tasks drains that precious supply of executive functioning energy. And so people often skip all the prioritizing and just get right into action. (Sound familiar?!) Instead of allowing the reality that you simply can't accomplish everything keep you back, let it be your ticket to freedom. The freedom to CHOOSE your priorities and let yourself off the hook for the rest. What is top of your priority list today?

There are many things that can leave your brain feeling EXHAUSTED. Let's talk about ONE of them: TOO MANY THOUGHTS. Your brain thinks. It thinks ALL the time, and it thinks ALL the thoughts. It pinballs around, having thought after thought after thought after thought... you get the picture. Now, let’s not forget that there’s some benefit here- some of those thoughts are incredible. Some of those thoughts can change the world. 💪 BUT - Let’s also be real- if your brain can’t finish the thought, it’s pretty hard to enact it. 😬 COGNITIVE OVERWHELM = TOO MANY THOUGHTS It's EXHAUSTING trying to follow each and every pinball thought around. It's a good and fast way to deplete your executive functioning tank. Exhaustion ➡️ Overwhelm It won't take long for your executive functioning system to wear out, leaving you with nothing but a bunch of frantic pinballs. Whewwwwww. 🥱I'm getting tired just thinking about it! Have you expereinced "cognitive overwhelm?" How do you manage it?

3/29/2024, 6:05:16 PM

Isn't that counter-productive? Nope! Here's why: Fact ➡️You can't focus for 8 hours straight. (That's not your ADHD, that's just being human.) We all need breaks - lots of breaks, actually. Taking breaks can allow our brains a moment to "reset" and "refresh" - ultimately improving our ability to focus. 🚫CAUTION: 🚫 Just switching over to YouTube - that's not a restorative break. Instead, I recommend getting up and moving around. Go for a short walk. Get a drink of water. Something like that. How often do you take breaks while you are working?

Why am I SO sensitive?! Have you ever wondered this? You're not alone. ❤️This is a pretty typical experience for individuals with ADHD. You see, the ADHD brain cannot ignore "unfairness." They perceive unfairness and wrongdoing in the world - and feel it more acutely - than neurotypical peers. ☝️This is called "JUSTICE SENSITIVITY."☝️ Here are a few additional signs of justice sensitivity: ➡️Hopelessness about large-scale issues facing the world ➡️Feelings of worthlessness when unfairly treated ➡️Rumination about inequity and injustice ➡️Intense guilt or shame about causing injustice Want to learn more? FEELING LOW ON DOPAMINE? 🐸// TRY THIS (AND REMEMBER TO SAVE FOR FUTURE REF!) There’s a theory that says you should do the most unpleasant task first, it’s called ‘Eating the Frog’. 🐸 For me personally, this doesn't work, but I still have to entice myself with something dopamine worthy to do the things on my list that I want to avoid. This is how I do it... I always write a list of things for the day, both in my journal and on my wipeable glass top desk by PURUS Life ( #gamechanger). I add the nice things at the top and intersperse things I don’t want to do at all and alternate between the two. Think of your brain as a bank account that uses dopamine as currency. 💰💰💰 I’m adding tiny deposits of dopamine to my brain bank by doing nice things and when I make a withdrawal by doing something I really don’t want to do, I can then go and do something I do want to do, and top up my savings account again. Sounds bonkers but it works! 🤯 Scroll through the above slides to see an example of a morning might look like when using this theory. The trick is not to allow your dopamine account to go overdrawn and risk burning out!! Let me know how you got on with the theory? Did it work for you? It's no surprise... The ADHD brain is wired differently than neurotypical brains. This includes the way in which the ADHD brain is motivated. It doesn't respond to "should" and "ought to." It doesn't hear, "It would be better if..." INSTEAD... ⭐The ADHD brain responds to the present moment. ⭐ And in the present moment? It always feels better to stay still than to move. So still it stays. UNLESS... There is something really good driving it forward. Something that gets it going. 🎉 So what actually gets the ADHD brain rolling? ➡️PRESSURE ➡️COMPETITION ➡️NOVELTY ➡️INTEREST/PASSION Knowing what motivates your ADHD brain helps you get into action and avoid the things that will naturally take your attention. Imagine a Venn diagram… ➡️One circle represents giftedness, bursting at the seams with intellect and imagination. ➡️Now, add a second circle swirling with the chaotic energy of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dancing to its own unpredictable rhythm. ➡️In the middle, where the circles intersect, is the magical realm of twice-exceptional adults with ADHD – a harmonious yet bewildering blend of soaring intellect, boundless creativity, and occasional bouts of organized chaos. It's like having a genius conductor guiding a symphony of fireworks while simultaneously chasing after a mischievous butterfly.
