Full grown already? Say it ain’t so! At only 8 weeks old our brand new Barn Owl, Salix, has officially fledged! A fledgling is a young bird that has grown their feathers and is learning to fly! In the wild, Salix would still be dependent on parental care at this stage and begin to hone their hunting skills. In captivity, Salix will also begin to hone in their skills, but for their role as an education ambassador. We are transitioning them into a new phase of training where we will focus on cooperative care like cleaning, weighing, and crating, and move into mentally and physically stimulating activities like flight demonstrations! As you can see, flying doesn't always start out very graceful, but Salix is demonstrating how most birds experiment with flight through scaling trees, testing out their wings, and starting with short distances! We can’t wait to see what is in store for Salix’s future and we are so excited to share their journey with you all! 📸Amanda Hancock #fledging #owlsofinstagram #babybarnowl #barnowl #nestling #salix #development #branching #EnvironmentalEducation #WorldCenterforBirdsofPrey #ConservationEducation #raptortraining #avianambassador #enviromentaleducators

Can you believe that Salix is 6 weeks old already?! The new addition to our team of avian ambassadors has been working hard to preen all of their new feathers and grow as much as birdly possible! You can now clearly see their heart shaped facial disk that works to funnel sounds into their ears. Salix the Barn Owl is becoming more confident in their daily routines and venturing out of their “cavity” more and more! We would like to thank everyone who has come to see Salix in our daily 1PM programs. You have helped us get Salix prepared for their life as an education ambassador! May 19th is your last chance to see them in our 1PM program for a while as we transition them into their next phase of training, so come on down to the World Center for Birds of Prey to see Salix before they are all grown up! 📸Amanda Hancock #development #nestling #EnvironmentalEducation #owlsofinstagram #salix #barnowl #babybarnowl #WorldCenterforBirdsofPrey #avianambassador #raptortraining

Time flies when you are growing this fast! Salix, our new Barn Owl is officially 5 weeks old! At this stage of development Salix is considered a 'nestling', or a young bird that cannot yet fly and leave it's nest. Salix is significantly more mobile than the last time you saw them and is walking around and even pouncing on their food! Speaking of food, they can now eat full mice without assistance. If you would like to see their growth in person, come on down to the World Center for Birds of Prey where we will be showing Salix to the public every day for our 1PM program until May 19th! 📸 Amanda Hancock #salix #development #barnowl #babybarnowl #avianambassador #owlsofinstagram #WorldCenterForBirdsOfPrey #nestling #EnvironmentalEducation

Baby season is in full swing everywhere, including here at The World Center for Birds of Prey! It is with great pleasure that we introduce Salix the Barn Owl, the brand new addition to our team of education ambassadors! At just three weeks old Salix has journeyed all the way from The World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis to The World Center for Birds of Prey here in Boise. Salix, pronounced SA-luhks, is named after the genus of willow trees where Barn Owls can often be found roosting. In the upcoming weeks Salix will be developing at a rapid rate and changing on a daily basis, and in order to progress in their role as an avian ambassador, we need your help! Young avian ambassadors like Salix need to be exposed to people early on so they can be confident and comfortable around guests and grow into their role of inspiring people to love birds of prey! To help facilitate this crucial step in their training, we invite you to join us for our 1PM programs where we will be presenting Salix every day starting Saturday, April 27th! These daily programs with Salix will go until May 19th, so don't miss your chance to see them in person before they are all grown up! If you can't make it down to the center fear not, because we will be keeping you all updated on their development and progress on our social media pages as well! 🦉❤️ #barnowl #salix #WorldCenterForBirdsOfPrey #EnvironmentalEducation #owlsofinstagram #avianambassador #babybarnowl #nestling #development

Time Flies! It was one year ago today that we celebrated the Grand Re-Opening and debut our brand new Welcome Center, exhibits, and the Open Skye Theater! Typically our volunteers have pretty defined roles and responsibilities but leading up to the big event there we lots of additional tasks that required attention. We all had to band together to get everything ready and volunteers were no exception! They went above and beyond helping staff to clean, organize, landscape, stock merchandise, erect fixtures, update exhibits, and more! When it came to the big day and we had all worked so hard that it was amazing to be able to celebrate this milestone as a team. It is with our heartfelt gratitude that we thank our volunteers for being flexible and willing to go above and beyond for our mission to conserve birds of prey worldwide. #GlobalVolunteerMonth #Volunteer #ConservationEducation #WorldCenterForBirdsOfPrey #BoiseIdaho #EarthDay #EnvironmentalEducation #ThePeregrineFund

The work of @peregrinefund does not end with the Peregrine Falcon. High on the list? The California Condor, who was down to only 22 individual birds in 1987. Now, thanks to the efforts of this organization and others, the population is estimated to be over 550! This was the first California Condor I ever saw, part of the rehabilitation program at @worldcenterforbirdsofprey but I later saw two in the wild flying over Zion NP and about a dozen at the Navajo Bridge in Page, AZ. … 📸 Canon 5D Mark IV x 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II … #planetbirds #your_best_birds #nuts_about_birds #birdsofinstagram #birds_of_ig #best_birds_photography #raw_birds #bird_watchers_daily #audubonsociety #ig_birdwatchers #best_birds_of_ig #bestoftheusa_birds #birdwatching #birds #bird_freaks #best_birds_of_instagram #bestbirdsofinstagram #yes_busa #birds_of_instagram #birds_adored #bird #birdphotography #women_wildlife_photography #digitalnomad #audubonsociety #californiacondor #peregrinefund #worldcenterforbirdsofprey #endangeredspecies #idaho

4/8/2024, 3:04:36 PM

One of my main motivators for the slight detour to Boise was to visit the @peregrinefund at their @worldcenterforbirdsofprey. I first learned about this organization from an excellent episode of the @ologies podcast. It was established in 1970 by ornithologist Tom Cade to help restore the Peregrine Falcon populations in the US. Remember Silent Spring and the DDT crisis? Rampant use of certain synthetic pesticides resulted in avian nerve & muscle damage as well as egg shell thinning and the poor things didn’t survive the nest. Peregrines were just one of the many species affected but with particularly devastating impact; by 1960 this species had disappeared entirely from the eastern US and much of the west. Predators are an incredibly important part of every ecosystem and are necessary to the overall balance and health of all living things on our planet. This fund pioneered methods to successfully breed birds in captivity and release them into the wild. At the time skeptics didn’t believe it would work and many said that humans shouldn’t meddle and just let the species die out. (But wasn’t it human meddling in the first place that nearly killed them??) Long story short, the Peregrine Falcon was removed from the endangered species list in 1999 🥰🤩. The Peregrine campaign is still recognized as one of the most successful conservation efforts in history. Their methods of captive breeding and release, combined with climate change prevention and restoration, are now used around the world to help other endangered bird species. … 📸 Canon 5D Mark IV x 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II … #nature #naturelover #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #wildlifeplanet #wildlifeonearth #wildlife #canonusa #canonphotography #canonphoto #canon #5dmarkiv #endangered #peregrinefund #worldcenterforbirdsofprey #idaho #conservation

That isn't a strange antenna on top of Tulio's head–those feathers form the crest, an identifying feature of the Ornate Hawk-eagle. "Ornate" is a fitting name for this species, with their piercing yellow eyes, stark black and white body feathers, and rusty nape. The patterning of their feathers helps them blend in with the patterned shadows that form through the vines and leaves in dense Neotropical rainforests. 📷 Amanda Hancock (@mrs.birder) . . . . #raptors #birdsofprey #wildlife #conservation #raptorconservation #wildlifeconservation #science #theperegrinefund #animals #birds #nature #BoiseIdaho #Idaho #Boise #VisitIdaho #WorldCenterforBirdsofPrey

Can you find the owls in all of these photos? Camouflage is an important characteristic for protection from predators, but owls also use camouflage to get uninterrupted sleep! Many owl species are nocturnal and sleep during daylight, which means they could be easily spotted by other animals. For small owls that are at risk of predation, blending into their environment is a mode of protection. Large owl species are known to be harassed by smaller birds who will fly at and alarm call around the perceived predator. As you can imagine, that would be quite annoying while trying to get some shut-eye, so blending in can help them avoid the annoying sleep disturbers. Have you ever heard of the Sokoke Scops-owl? If not, it's likely because not a lot is known about this highly reclusive owl. This owl species has only been found in a few locations: the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and Dakatcha Woodlands of Kenya, and the Usambara Mountains of Tanzania. Scientists from The Peregrine Fund have been working to gain information about this reclusive species in Kenya and estimate that the population dropped by more than 20% in a little over 15 years due to habitat loss! Vultures sometimes get a bad reputation because of how they look and what they eat. Oliver the Verreaux's Eagle-owl is showing off his rictal bristles, the whispy feathers around his beak. These modified feathers serve a similar purpose to the whiskers found in mammals—another way of sensing their environment. This is especially important for owls, who have poor vision up close. Rictal bristles help them feel and find their prey with their beak once it's in their talons. You might wonder why sometimes the rictal bristles stand up and other times lay flat against the face. Birds have muscles specific to each feather, which allow them to raise and lower feathers to help with body language and communication, temperature control, and sensory input. Come visit Oliver and our other Avian Ambassadors for Family Field Trip Weekends through February when youth admission is free! 📷 Amanda Hancock (@mrs.birder) #raptors #birdsofprey #wildlife #conservation #raptorconservation #wildlifeconservation #science #theperegrinefund #animals #birds #nature #BoiseIdaho #Idaho #Boise #VisitIdaho #WorldCenterforBirdsofPrey #owls #owlsofinstagram #education #scienceeducation #stem

Our Propagation Team is preparing for the upcoming breeding season! Aplomado Falcons are the only falcon on the U.S. Endangered Species List. The Peregrine Fund has an active Aplomado Falcon conservation program and one important aspect of this project is our captive breeding program. Our Propagation Team works hard to create safe and comfortable chambers for them to live in, which includes new perches, heat panels, nests, windows, skylights, and more! We hope they like their home improvements! 📷: Amber Zelmer @peregrinefund #raptors #birdsofprey #wildlife #conservation #raptorconservation #wildlifeconservation #science #theperegrinefund #animals #birds #nature #BoiseIdaho #Idaho #Boise #VisitIdaho #WorldCenterforBirdsofPrey #aplomadofalcon #captivebreeding

Winter is officially here and the birds came prepared! California Condors are known for their featherless heads and necks but, don’t worry, they are able to keep themselves warm by tucking their their head down into their built-in "feather boa" around their shoulders. It is essentially an insulated hood, and keeps them protected from the elements. 📷: Kelsey Tatton #raptors #birdsofprey #wildlife #conservation #raptorconservation #wildlifeconservation #science #theperegrinefund #animals #birds #nature #BoiseIdaho #Idaho #Boise #VisitIdaho #WorldCenterforBirdsofPrey #californiacondor #condors #winter

Farah the Ferruginous Hawk not only looks stunning with the snowy backdrop, but is made for the snow! Ferruginous Hawks remain in the United States for the winter, unlike many migratory species which fly south to the warmth of South America. You can spot them this time of year in grasslands and deserts, capitalizing on ground squirrel and prairie dog colonies. 📷 Kelsey Tatton #raptors #worldcenterforbirdsofprey #theperegrinefund #ferruginoushawk #hawks #birdsofprey #raptorconservation

Stay Wild Saturday! Help keep our raptors wild!Throwing food out your car windows while driving increases the likelihood of raptors getting hit on highways. Food attracts live animals to the side of the roads, which attracts hawks and eagles close to roads. And roadkill attracts scavengers like vultures, causing them to get hit by cars as well. HaRpy Hatch Day, Grayson! Grayson the Harpy Eagle celebrated his 21st birthday this past Sunday by shredding a sloth-shaped piñata created by Raptor Specialist Jadn! These photos are just a teaser... video of Grayson's celebration coming soon! Grayson hatched in Panama has part of The Peregrine Fund's captive breeding program for the Harpy Eagle. After being released into the wild in 2003, he was frequently fed by tour guides and became too comfortable with humans. For his safety, he was removed from the wild and brought to the World Center for Birds of Prey to become an ambassador for The Peregrine Fund's successful Harpy Eagle conservation program. 📷 Amanda Hancock (@mrs.birder) #wildlife #harpyeagle #panama #eagle #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #raptors #raptorconservation #worldcenterforbirdsofprey #theperegrinefund #birds

We are launching our new "People Series" to highlights the work of individuals who have made a difference here at The World Center for Birds of Prey. To kick things off we would like to highlight Jeff McElwee. Jeff started volunteering with The Peregrine Fund in July 2014. From Day 1, Jeff’s professionalism and charisma was apparent as he connected with guests with ease and contagious enthusiasm. Over the years Jeff has found himself serving in many roles as a Docent, Raptor Handler, and Guide (to name a few). It was a unique treat for visitors to join Jeff on a tour of the Archives of Falconry where he regaled visitors with international examples of our falconry heritage. In May 2021, he joined the staff at the World Center for Birds of Prey as an Education Programs Assistant. As a staff member, he continued to engage with guests in-person and through social media. In November 2023 Jeff retired as a staff member, but could not bear to leave the center completely, so he reprised his role as a volunteer Docent! Jeff has and continues to leave a lasting impact on The Peregrine Fund and our global community. After 9.5 years his enthusiasm, care for guests, love for birds, and brilliant photography is still shared and felt by staff and visitors alike and we cannot thank him enough for his dedication. #volunteer #worldcenterforbirdsofprey #theperegrinefund #raptorconservation #birdsofprey #ornithology #BoiseIdaho #Boise #VisitIdaho
