Did you know that American robins are known for their early morning songs, often heard before sunrise announcing the start of a new day? And yes the get the worms as a result. No really, they are renowned for their unique feeding habits. They are skilled at finding worms by cocking their heads to listen for movement in the soil, then quickly pouncing to catch their prey. An American Kestrel. It perched on a lamp post and watched me for a while before soaring through the urban landscape and disappearing into the whispy sky. Watching it made me think about how these birds/animals perceive the world around them and how we can better coexist. I saw a beautiful spot by the local pond that produces a soft and ethereal light in the evenings. I was hoping to take an environmental shot and luckily, I captured a majestic Eastern Towhee. It's actually one of my favorite singers, much better than Justin Timberlake (since it's gonna be May) 😅🤣. I said what I said 🐦 ✨ From chatting with a few of you, I know this week/month has been busy - heck for both birds and us! With migrations, ever mounting workloads, and daily stresses, it is even more important to remember to take some time to rest. #TrailblazerTuesday doloreshuerta is an influential labor activist and important leader of the Chicano civil rights movement. She founded the Agricultural Workers Association and co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), which later became the United Farm Workers’ Union (UFW), alongside activist César Chávez. She organized workers, negotiated contracts, advocated for safer working conditions and worked to end the use of harmful pesticides. She led numerous consumer boycotts that led to successful negotiations for improved working conditions for farmers. She continues the lucha today, working on increasing Latino and women representation and founding @doloreshuertafd. We enjoyed a beautiful hike through Van Cortlandt Park last week! Whether it was in Spanish, English, or Spanglish, we’re so glad to have connected with some incredible explorers in the sunshine (and, yes, even with a bit rain—good thing we didn’t melt 😉)! My first ghost sighting 👻 a Grey ghost, aka Northern Harrier! Happy Earth Day! ❤️ 🌎 This Northern Harrier was traversing the fields searching for food. They made their presence known instantly, yet came seemingly out of nowhere. I still remember that hot afternoon in October 2022 when a massive flock of Yellow-Headed Black Birds showed up at the local watering hole. I observed a lovely Field Sparrow, which reminded me of the natural cycles of life happening all around us. Without going into too much detail, after a prep session, I watched as they devoured the worm with the same enthusiasm as I enjoy eating a gummy worm (candy). 🐛 🐦 🍴 😂 North American Field Sparrows play a crucial role in the ecosystem as seed dispersers, aiding in plant regeneration despite their small size. “A little later-gram action to share a fun educational event from back in November. Latino Outdoors worked in collaboration with @savethesnakesorg to get volunteers from across California trained on venomous snakes, including identification, first aid, critical steps for care after a bite, as well as working directly with Save the Snakes ambassador animals, including California kingsnake, Pacific gopher snake, and Northern Pacific rattlesnake. Next time you’re on a hike with us, ask us about snakes! We’ll be happy to share what we learned 🐍 we’d like to send a huge thank you to Save the Snakes for opening their doors to us and sharing such important information on our snake relatives and safety!
