PFP is partnering with @TMIProject to provide a series of true storytelling workshops culminating in a live performance and digital content. Led by an experienced Black facilitation team, this summer collective will gather to create brave space for Black, Latinx and Asian-identified Poughkeepsie teens and adults to explore relationship to nature and growing food, or barriers to creating connections with land. Freedom Walker’s story of being displaced from her home in Harlem was first shared at TMI Project’s first Black Stories Matter performance in Kingston, NY in 2017. Since then, Kingston has also experienced sweeping gentrification, making her story all the more relevant. Today TMI Project presented at a Planned Parenthood conference in Milwaukee for nearly 200 employees. Wisconsin was one of many states unable to provide medical abortion health care services after Roe was overturned; that is until a few weeks ago. This dedicated group of people have been hard at work to make it possible. It was an emotional room to be in. Grateful we got to be there. This year, @tmiproject honored Jay Jackson at Voices in Action. To say it’s easily one of the highlights of my 30s is an understatement. I have been inspired by, in awe of, and loved by Jay for nearly 15 years. Her spirit embodies everything I love about art: fearlessness, ferociousness, and full of fervor. And how, you might ask, does a person become a world-class performing artist like the woman behind the character of @laganjaestranja? Jay will tell you: through unmitigated belief in yourself. (Easier said than done, but when you catch glimpses of it… mm mm mm.) I hate these kinds of dumb posts, but I think, in the midst of the miraculous shitshow we find the planet in right now, finding reasons to celebrate the audacity and tenacity of the otherwise very stupid and scary human experience is the only way we’re gonna be able to enjoy ourselves while we still can. But even before the doom and gloom of 2020 flipped it all inside out, I had Jay to admire and adore. I don’t get to see this beaut as much as I’d like, but if every five-ish years we get to hang and dote on each other, I’m fine with that. Congrats on your first of many awards and accolades, mama.
