Day One in Japan We’re in the coastal town of Kamakura, which is a bit like the Japanese version of Waikiki, located near the megatropolis of Tokyo and being a popular destination for beginning and intermediate surfers to enjoy it’s soft, rolling waves. See the compass in that first vid? Beach faces southeast, looking out across the Pacific from the opposite side. There are incredibly beautiful shrines and sculptures throughout the region. As a carver and lifelong student of religion, I am frequently thunderstruck by the power and serenity of the stone effigies and animal forms all around us. This entire adventure is made possible by my dear friend and colleague Tomoko “Tomtom” Yakota. We have known each other for decades and she is one of my very favorite people on earth. So grateful for all her support, her intelligence and kindness, and for this incredible opportunity. After a full day wandering around Endoshima Island we visited the legendary Buddha of Kamakura, the massive Kamakura Daibutsu. Cast entirely of bronze, the Kamakura Diabatsu stands over thirteen meters tall and weighs more than 240,000 pounds. Construction on it began in 1252 and it has been radiating enlightenment for over seven hundred years. We were fortunate enough to get to go inside it to see the seams of all the castings from the inside. When I placed my hand upon it I was startled to feel the warmth of the surface from today’s sunshine, radiating warmth and wisdom to us all. Surrounded by magic and mystery. Seems so long ago now that we were still in #Japan with our friends. Here are a few #snapshots of some of the sites in and around #kyoto. I miss Japan and l miss my friend @noriko_kwkt of course. FYI: #amanoshidate is featured here - of which #basho - 17th century poet & traveller said - was one of the three most beautiful places to behold in Japan.
