I finally made it to Yogyakarta, a main pilgrimage spot on my journey through Java, and what better way to kick off my time in what is considered the cultural centre of the island than with a traditional shadow puppet show. "Wayang" - the Javanese word for "Shadow" or "Imagination" - is a form of puppet theatre that originates from the island of Java and is accompanied by the dreamy sound of a gamelan orchestra. Performances are usually held at certain rituals, ceremonies, events or even tourist attractions. In Bali the puppet shows are used for prayer rituals to cleanse children from bad luck or to give thanks for abundant crops. Four years since I collaborated with @rahul_pulavar1 (a Tholpavakoothu artist), it was only earlier this month that I finally got an opportunity to meet the much-acclaimed Padmashree Ramachandra Pulavar Sir. A long-cherished wish was thus fulfilled. And the icing on the cake was that I met him and his son @tholpavakoothu Rajeev Pulavar at the very temple where this traditional art form was 1st performed as a ritualistic offering—the Shree Purateel Bhagawati Temple in Kollengode. The Tholpavakoothu performance in this temple as a ritualistic offering, holds a profound historical significance. Legend has it that when Bhadrakali returned after slaying Darika, she expressed her desire to witness Ravana's demise. Thus, a tholpavakoothu (shadow puppetry) was performed to fulfill her wish. Despite the declining audience numbers, this is the only temple where Tholpavakoothu is performed twice a year for 14 nights. Spending an hour conversing with Sir and Rajeev about the art form, its past, present, and future, was incredibly insightful. As I was leaving, Ramachandra Sir posed a thought-provoking question: "Amidst increasing interest and research in Tholpavakoothu, what does the art itself gain?" This question has been lingering on my mind since. Haven’t shared a shadow puppet in a while……..so here’s that time I let my mind wander to ancient Mesopotamia ….. Enki is the Sumerian god of water, knowledge, crafts and creation-and one of the Anunnaki (a group of deities of the ancient Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians and Babylonians…..don’t worry I have a list of fabulous characters to explore after this one the length of my leg) The story/poem of Enki’s Hailstorm is part of one of the earliest of human creation myths-from the epic of Gilgamesh, a Sumerian version of The Great Flood. Enki commands the building a of a large boat (Noah’s arc vibes 1000 years prior) and sets sail on a perilous journey to the Netherworld. Aboard the boat were His relatives and craftsmen, and “all the beasts and animals of the field” . The boat is pelleted by relentless hail and battered by the storm of the gods…..still Enki manages to out-ride the flood and proves his Godly worth (spoiler-he doesn’t die). Instead himself and his wife are granted immortality. Anyway, this is my shadow puppet interpretation of Enki putting in an effort to scoop out and pour away the sea water which fills the boat during this epic journey. After what feels like the longest and wettest winter aboard my vessel, I can quite relate….. The music on the little video clip is Peter Pringle playing a Sumerian “gish-gudi”, the ancient ancestor of lutes. 🇬🇷 Το Σάββατο 30 Μαρτίου το Εργαστήριο μας θα παρουσιάσει στο Μουσείο Μαρμαροτεχνίας Τήνου την επετειακή παράσταση «Η Μονομαχία των δύο Ληστών». Η παράσταση αναφέρεται χρονικά στην περίοδο λίγο πριν την έκρηξη της Επανάστασης του 1821. Ο Τούρκος Πασάς, διώκτης των χριστιανών, οργανώνει ξιφομαχικούς αγώνες με πρωταγωνιστή έναν δεινό ξιφομάχο, τον Μαύρο της Ανατολής. Ως δέλεαρ τάζει γάμο με την όμορφη κόρη του και πλούσια αμοιβή για όποιον τον νικήσει. Η παρέα του Καραγκιόζη παρελαύνει διεκδικώντας το έπαθλο, πέφτοντας όμως θύμα του φοβερού ξιφομάχου. Ο Καραγκιόζης δεν θα μείνει απαθής και επιστρατεύοντας τα αστεία και την εξυπνάδα του θα δώσει λύση στο δράμα. 🖌️🎨 Της παράστασης θα προηγηθεί Εργαστήριο Κατασκευής Φιγουρών, από διάφορα υλικά για τους μικρούς και τους μεγάλους φίλους μας. Tonight we went to see a shadow puppet show @bambustage! It was AMAZING! One of the highlights of the Cambodia trip, honestly. The actors did some fun skits breaking the 4th wall and we even got to try the puppets after the show. The MC told us how shadow puppet theater has struggled since Covid.
