Designed specifically for Afghan newcomers in the United States, this program provided more than just sewing skills. Through weekly gatherings in Minneapolis, it offered Afghan women much-needed support, healing, and a sense of community during their challenging transitions to a new country. 🧵👭 We've seen significant benefits: a 44% reduction in loneliness and a 55% decrease in depression among participants. "This is only my second session, and I have learnt so much" - @sewing_st.albans during our session earlier this week. I was quick to note down this fabulous quote after Kerri asked for some advice. The session, like so many, had lots of advice and sharing, which is what I really love hearing - I've learnt a few things myself! If you are stuck, want advice or guidance, other attendees are always willing to help out if you ask. Once we have done introductions, we then go into our chatty space where you can ask anything. So glad it has become a social and helpful space. We love hearing about how she manages her small sewing stash, taking part in challenges (most recently March mending) and sewing weekends she goes to! In Béa words; "Hi, I’m Béa (Béatrice @MissBeaCurtis), from Guildford in Surrey. I’ve been sewing for as long as I can remember, one way or another. I love the magic of transforming a bit of fabric to something that you can actually wear! Most of my wardrobe is me-made, and I’m an advocate for amending and hacking patterns, to make the most of them, and to engage your creativity and ingenuity. Apart from Sewing, I teach Bellydance, and of course I made my own costumes when I was performing. I had to stop when I realised I had more costumes than opportunities to wear them! I'm half French, hence the accent. Since 18th April 2023, we've hosted 39 regular sessions, two sewalongs, over 800 sign ups on Eventbrite, of which over 200 unique sign ups. FAQ. Do I need to be sewing during the session? No. . Sew, unpick, mend, knit, plan, tidy, handsew, crochet, cutting out fabric, quilting, printing out patterns, drafting, shoe making....etc. This is time you can put aside to do what you want/need in your creative space. We like to share what we are up to during the session, however long you are staying. FAQ - I'm shy/anxious/nervous about joining.... You can keep your camera and mic off and just listen in. THAT IS OK! If you sign up and are feeling anxious about joining, you are welcome to send me a message or email. I can make sure the host for your session is aware IF you want me to. We don't pick or force anyone to talk if they don't want to - VSR is all about a relaxed environment. That said, if you attend and think there are ways to help you feel more relaxed, let me know. We are a friendly bunch, and if you want to listen in during session whilst sewing away, THAT'S IS OK! You can use the chat function to communicate at any point. . I'm a naturally introverted and anxious person, as are a few of our attendees too. FAQ - Do I need to attend the whole session? No! The sessions are generally 2 hours and you can come and go as you need to. People often apologise for being late, but there is no need. No register is taken, and l totally understand life often calls, whether that's children, work, pets, or other life stuff. You are welcome to pop in for 10 minutes to get a feel of sessions. The space is here for you if you want to socialise with other like-minded people. We are a relaxed space. If you arrive late, give us a wave, and we'll try to say hello when the conversation allows.
