This week we welcome Jonny Leitch @leitchdrums (Sound Designer, Drummer / Performer), Elana Binysh @elanabinysh (Live Artist/Dramaturg) and Jenny Davies @jenny_r_davies (Theatre maker/Director) to LEVEL! They are the second group of artists to visit us as part of our Parallel Perspectives Residency, in collaboration with Old Diorama Arts Centre @olddiorama in London. This collaboration is an exploration of what it means to unmask – as people making a show, and as people watching one. What does it mean to have a practice that is completely Neurodiverse, and is this achievable within Capitalism? Never Made Sense In The First Place will be an experimental piece of a gig theatre: a noisy, chaotic celebration of neurodiverse thought patterns. We're really excited by what they're getting up to in our main space this week... there's music, dancing, props, lights and loads of experimentation and energy! ODAC and LEVEL launched Parallel Perspectives as a joint open call for disabled artists interested in undertaking a paid residency in both centres, providing two distinctly different locations in which to explore their work. This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and the theme for this year is ‘Movement: Moving more for our mental health’. Our bodies and our minds are connected! Exercise releases “feel good” hormones, that reduce feelings of stress and anger. It helps us feel better about our bodies and can improve our sleep too. It can also be a way to connect with others and reduce feelings of loneliness or isolation. But new research from the @mentalhealthfoundation shows that too many people are facing barriers to moving for their mental health due to inequality. One in seven people (15%) said that a long-term condition or disability prevented them from doing more physical activity. For others, feeling low, depressed or anxious was also a barrier to being more active, particularly amongst young people. At LEVEL we see the benefits of movement to our LEVEL Makes learning disabled participants. They take part in performance and movement sessions here at the centre every Monday. And when the weather is good, the group can combine creative activities with walks around our local area. Everyone is supported to do the amount and type of movement that is comfortable for them. It's so important that we help people overcome barriers to movement. We're over the moon to announce that £135,000 has been awarded to LEVEL Centre, from Arts Council England’s Capital Investment Programme! This is the news everyone here at LEVEL has been waiting for! LEVEL Centre will benefit from a share of the £24.2million Capital Investment funding programme, to help with: - building works - purchase of equipment and other assets to improve access - technological opportunities - reducing environmental impact Our amazing Executive and Artistic Director Kerry Andrews, who worked so hard on our application alongside the rest of the team, says: 'We extend our deepest thanks to Arts Council England for their generosity in providing £135,000 towards capital improvements for our accessible rural arts centre. This invaluable support will enable us to enhance our facilities, advance our commitment to environmental responsibility, improve accessibility, and upgrade our technology. Everyone had a great time and got really creative on one of the fantastic old print presses in the studio. Some of the work created on Saturday will be part of an exhibition that Youth Collective are producing and curating. This will be exhibiting at Bakewell Old House Museum next year! Includes 42 digital kite designs made by adults with learning disabilities and local young people 2.
