Huge congratulations to #NYUTandon computer engineering alum (BS '23) Weijie Wang on receiving high honors in the AERPAW Find a Rover (AFAR) challenge, which calls upon students to use a UAV outfitted with a software-defined radio to pinpoint the signal from an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). Thanks to an algorithm he had developed while working with Research Assistant Professor Fraida Fund, during last year’s Undergraduate Summer Research Program, Wang placed second in the category measuring which team had the smallest localization error after three minutes of flight time and third in the category that measured smallest localization error after a 10-minute flight — an incredible performance given that he was a team of one and has not yet embarked upon graduate studies. “In the future, drones could boost 5G service by providing increased coverage and connectivity, while 5G could enhance drone operations by providing improved signal quality and precise location data, so that’s a win-win situation,” he says. “Overall, I believe my work could be of significant benefit in various sectors. This event featured a trio of trailblazers in cybersecurity, including: —Grace Chi, the Cofounder and COO of Pulsedive, a company dedicated to providing frictionless and community-driven threat intelligence for growing teams. —Ruth Gittens, an executive cybersecurity leader. —Alexandra Tarabour, the COO of ForceField, a company with patent-pending software for digital evidence that verifies metadata in real-time, offering solvability and provability against disinformation, content deletion/spoofing, physical threats, and cyber attacks. —As well as the panel's moderator, Alexandra Adegoke, a recent cybersecurity graduate. #NYUTandon has been a school of many firsts, one of which being the first school in the United States to have a research facility dedicated to polymer science. And this is all thanks to long time faculty member, Herman F. Mark. Before coming to Tandon (then known as Brooklyn Poly) and earning the nickname, “Father of Polymer Science,” Mark was born and raised in Vienna, Austria and was introduced to science at a young age. However, Mark was forced to flee Germany in 1938 to escape Hitler’s impending takeover. His lengthy journey eventually took him to the United States, where he accepted a position in 1942 as an adjunct professor of chemistry at what was then known as the Polytechnic Institute. In 1946, Mark found the Polymer Research Institute. The Institute became world-renowned, drawing students and postdoctoral fellows from around the globe, and laying the foundation for materials exploration that continues at NYU Tandon to this day. In addition to creating the Institute, Mark also founded the first American polymer journal, the Journal of Polymer Science, in 1946. Mark received a National Medal of Science @nsfgov in 1979 and in 2003, @amerchemsociety designated the Polymer Research Institute as a National Historic Chemical Landmark. 《Remnant》is an interactive installation representing my depiction of dreams for my Graduate Thesis. The installation is based on Calvin Hall's Continuity Hypothesis, which suggests that dreams are a collage of fragments from our different waking life memories. Remnant explores this intriguing concept, focusing on the philosophical aspects of memory remnants and their links to daily experiences. It creatively represents these ideas through an intricate arrangement of kinetic fragments triggered by human movement detection. As far as I am concerned, the fragments represent the memory shard inside our dreams. Remnant’s interactivity lies in the rotation speed of the winch system that controls the ups and downs of the fragments, and the speed intensity is controlled by the detection of human movement by the Fresnel lens. The combination of big, mid, and small fragments represents the diverse memory debris inside a human dream, when an audience comes under the array, it mimics the action of entering into one’s dream. The ups and downs movements match the human sleeping cycle, iterated by an array of numbers inside Arduino codes, and eventually translate to interactivity. What do you get when you bring together three #NYUTandon master’s graduates and a professor of Civil & Urban Engineering and Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering? Well, in this case, you’d get Building Diagnostic Robotics — an AI-enabled robotic building-inspection system. BDR was created by Bilal Sher (Tandon ‘22), Talha Javed (Tandon ‘23), Sruti Madhusudhan (Tandon ‘23), and Professor Chen Feng. As a graduate student from Feng’s AI4CE lab, Sher developed EASEEbot, a precursor to his eventual company that offers commercialized AI-powered robotic building inspections. This team participated in not only the NSF I-Corps program, but was part of the inaugural Tech Venture Accelerator, an initiative launched this past year thanks to funding from alumnus and trustee Mark Leslie and his wife, Debra. Huge congratulations to #NYUTandon teams CaroRhythm and UniqLearn for winning the NYU Entrepreneurs Challenge Healthcare & Biomed Venture Competition — and it's $75,000 prize! The NYU Entrepreneurs Challenge, hosted annually by the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship, is a springboard for promising NYU startups. CaroRhythm is a non-invasive medical device that provides point-of-care carotid artery monitoring and stimulation to improve the outcome and quality of life of stroke survivors through early detection of and control over recurrent stroke symptoms. This team consists of PhD candidate Nisha Maheshwari and MS student Lokesh Sharma. UniqLearn is a platform that creates learning profiles for K12 students to generate uniquely tailored learning material, igniting student engagement while providing teachers with actionable insights into what each student needs and how they can help. This team consists of Tandon BS student Daniel Kenigsberg and @nyugallatin BA student Aidan McDowell. Past Tandon winners of this competition include 2023-2022 co-hort members Vital Audio Inc. and Stepwise, 2019-2018 co-hort members Blue Instrument and MICSI, 2018-2017 co-hort member Sunthetics, 2016-2015 co-hort member Elements Digital Health and 2015-2014 co-hort members Ephemeral Tattoo. #NYUTandonMade

The two schools, founded to bring engineering education to America's largest metropolis, would merge, diverge, and merge again over the next 170 years.
