Este dia, instituído pela ONU em 2017, visa aumentar a conscientização sobre a importância das abelhas e outros polinizadores para o meio ambiente e a segurança alimentar. A data presta tributo a Anton Janša, pioneiro da apicultura moderna, nascido em 20 de maio de 1734 na Eslovênia. On April 9, more than 200 seventh and eighth graders at Meridian Middle School explored careers through a program called STEM Like ME! Career Connect NW, hosted at the NWESD 189, scheduled eleven employers and presenters to engage small groups of students in hands-on activities to learn more about family-wage, high-demand career paths in the region. Each student engaged in three 10-minute sessions to learn about a variety of careers including information technology, computer science, human-centered design, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, environmental sciences, and maritime apprenticeships. Students enjoyed the hands-on activities and were able to understand more about these careers. In a post-event survey, 75% of student survey respondents indicated that their knowledge of STEM careers and pathways increased, and 44% of student survey respondents indicated an increase in their interest toward pursuing a career in a STEM field after participating in this event. Many states have some sort of “epic” trail that showcases the entire scope of its geography. Ohio has the Buckeye Trail, North Carolina has the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, and Michigan has the Iron Belle—named for its connection of Ironwood in the far west UP to Belle Isle in Detroit. The Iron Belle is really two trails in one; two completely separate routes for hiking and biking, adding up to over 2,000 miles in length. The hiking trail sensibly follows the route of the North Country National Scenic Trail, which conveniently passes through both peninsulas on its way from North Dakota to Vermont. Eventually though, the trail parts ways with the NCT near Homer, MI, angling towards Detroit for the homestretch. Unfortunately, the Michigan DNR is making no attempt to preserve the “hiking” nature of this Homer-to-Detroit section, and so those final ~150 miles will consist of paved multi-use paths and bike lanes, despite numerous pre-existing hiking trails following the necessary trajectory. For a trail that’s actively prioritizing off-road, unpaved singletrack, stick to the NCT, which continues on from Homer to the Ohio line and beyond. But I digress. The biking trail will be ~828 miles of beautiful, intentionally-built bike paths, hugging the shores of Lake Michigan, circumnavigating Mackinac Island, and consisting of ex-rail trails connecting small towns all throughout the Wolverine State. At Mile 0.0 in Ironwood, there’s an actual iron bell you can ring when you start or finish your epic journey. It’s National Park week! Did you know Michigan has 7 units within the @nationalparkservice? While Isle Royale is the Mitten State’s only National Park, Michigan is also home to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Keweenaw National Historical Park, River Raisin National Battlefield Park, MotorCities National Heritage Area, and my personal favorite, the North Country National Scenic Trail. Even though it’s more than twice as long as the more well-known National Scenic Trails like the Appalachian & Pacific Crest, the North Country Trail truly flies under the radar. At 4,800 miles long, the NCT is the longest unit in the National Park Service system, stretching from North Dakota to Vermont. 1,180 of those miles traverse Michigan, winding through the most beautiful areas of our state: Porcupine Mountains, Pictured Rocks, Tahquamenon Falls, and along the Manistee River. Hiking it locally, you’re sure to discover even more hidden gems close to home you never knew existed.
