Love Story Magazine - Feb. 27, 1937. Art by Modest Stein. I do not normally post much from the Romance genre of pulps. When I saw this one, I felt that it stood out as one of the better covers. On this day in 1876, Alexander Graham Bell received a patent for his invention of the telephone. ☎️ ☎️ ☎️ A native of Scotland, Bell developed his telephone while teaching at a school for the deaf in Boston, Massachusetts. His prototype featured vibrations that electronically transferred sound from one instrument to another. A few days after filing the patent, Bell ran his first successful test of the telephone, famously calling his assistant, “Mr. Watson, come here, I need you.” Did you know? The invention of the telephone was key in Bell’s love life. When he fell in love with his future wife, Mabel, her father opposed the match based on Bell’s low finances. They finally married a few days after he secured his fortune with the Bell Telephone Company, and he referred to her as “the girl for whom the telephone was invented.” ❤️ 📞 ❤️ 📞 ❤️ A Live Wire, Modest Stein, 1914 . . . #otd #onthisday #thisdayinhistory #onthisdayinhistory #historyfacts #americanhistory #alexandergrahambell #alexandergrahambellquotes #telephone #telephonelove #invention #inventions #finestinventions #inventionking #coolinventions #phoneguy #firstphone #firstphonecall #firsttelephone #belltelephone #lovequotes #bostonhistory #modeststein

Thanks to the generosity of our dealers, PulpFest will celebrate the convention's return with pizza at 5 PM on Thursday, August 19. All PulpFest attendees are invited to have a slice or two. We'll have cheese, pepperoni, and margherita pizzas available. PulpFest is more than a dealers’ room filled with tens of thousands of collectible items from pulp magazines (such as the September 23, 1923 LOVE STORY MAGAZINE, featuring cover art by Modest Stein) to first edition hardcovers to original art and more. Nor is it several evenings of fantastic presentations such as Jim Beard's “The Shadow — Multimedia Hero” or Henry G. Franke’s “The Amazing, Thrilling, and Fantastic Edgar Rice Burroughs,” one of our ERBFest presentations. PulpFest is people — readers, collectors, and dealers with a love for popular fiction and art. People who realize that the pulps had a profound impact on American popular culture. Now, thanks to the convention's dealers, attendees of PulpFest -- and this summer's ERBFest -- will learn just how generous the pulp community can be.

8/16/2021, 3:00:31 AM

There’s just one week left until PulpFest 2021 begins. PulpFest is the summertime destination for fans and collectors of popular fiction, both old and new. The convention will be celebrating the centennial of LOVE STORY MAGAZINE -- the July 17, 1937 issue, with cover art by Modest Stein, is pictured here -- and the 90th anniversary of THE SHADOW. PulpFest 2021 will begin on Thursday, August 19. Visit pulpfest.com to learn more.

This original painting by Modest Stein arrived yesterday. It was done for the cover of Love Story - Jan 15, 1938. But what is so cool about it is the provenance. It belonged to Daisy Bacon, the editor of Love Story. She went on to edit Doc Savage and The Shadow in the mid to late 1940s as well. The pulp industry, like many others at the time, was a mans world. In the second image, you can see this painting on the wall in her office. This painting is currently for sale on my website. If it does not sell, that’s fine by me. I love it! . . #vintagepulps #pulp #pulpmagazine #pulpart #illustration #illustrationart #vintage #retro #modeststein #daisybacon

Yesterday was Independence Day, the day we celebrate freedom in the USA. Today, PulpFest celebrates the free stuff that we'll be giving out to our members at this year's convention. From Bear Manor Media to THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION, this year's donations sparkle, just like the couple in Modest Stein's cover painting for the July 5, 1941 issue of LOVE STORY MAGAZINE. It's looking pretty good for being eighty years old! PulpFest and ERBFest 2021 will be August 19 - 22 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Pittsburgh - Cranberry, in Mars, PA. One of the many highlights of PulpFest is the convention’s program book, THE PULPSTER. Each issue has a circulation of 450 – 500 copies, reaching a serious core of collectors, readers, and other enthusiasts. Be a part of PulpFest 2021 by placing an advertisement in this year’s issue of THE PULPSTER. The program book will appear regardless of the convention’s status. Visit www.pulpfest.com to learn more about advertising in THE PULPSTER. Pictured here is a cover mock-up -- designed by PULPSTER editor William Lampkin -- for THE PULPSTER #30. The cover art is by Modest Stein, the primary cover artist for Street & Smith’s LOVE STORY MAGAZINE for over twenty years. Unfortunately, we’re not certain where Stein’s painting was originally used. Perhaps it was LOVE STORY during the late thirties or early forties. The cover art could sometimes get a bit racy during that period.

We'll end tonight's Modest Stein Shadow marathon with one of his more symbolic Shadow paintings from the 1940s. It's the cover art for the August 1945 issue of THE SHADOW, the Street & Smith hero pulp. It illustrates the novel, "Murder by Magic." Remember, visit pulpfest.com for "PulpFest Historical — Modest Stein — From Anarchist to Artist," a substantial look at the artist and his work written by Laurie Powers.

Yet another symbolic Modest Stein cover rendered in a realistic fashion. Created for the July 1945 issue of THE SHADOW, it illustrates Walter B. Gibson's "The Mask of Mephisto." "Somewhere in that gay carnival of Mardi Gras … lurked a macabre problem for The Shadow -- pitted against Mephisto!"

2/28/2021, 4:30:42 AM

Modest Stein's cover painting for the January 1945 issue of THE SHADOW takes the prize for his most symbolic and experimental cover of the magazine's run. What's with the twisting staircase? What does it all mean? I guess we need to read Walter B. Gibson's novel to decypher the meaning of Stein's painting and the banner running across the magazine's lower quarter: "The Winged Figure Was a 'Guardian of Death.'"

2/28/2021, 4:15:54 AM

Do we call this one a realistic or symbolic Shadow painting? It's dated December 1943, the first of the digest issues of the Street & Smith hero pulp. The story is "Murder by Moonlight" and Modest Stein's cover pretty much encapsulates the title of Walter B. Gibson's lead novel. The full moon looms large in the background of the canvas, while the dark figure in the foreground -- which almost resembles a werewolf -- is dark with hands covered in blood.

2/28/2021, 4:00:32 AM

Falling back a few years, here's the June 1943 number of THE SHADOW. It's the fourth of Modest Stein's 1940s covers for the Street & Smith hero pulp and perhaps the most fluid and one of the most experimental of the artist's 40+ cover paintings for the magazine. The Shadow's billowing cape takes on the shape of a bat's wing in this dark, yet colorful, cover painting. And then there are the colorless roses down in the painting's lower righthand corner. The story is Walter B. Gibson's "Murder Lake."

2/28/2021, 3:45:06 AM

Here's another beautiful cover by Modest Stein, illustrating "The Banshee Murders." It's the January 1946 number of the magazine. Rendered in a quite realistic fashion, it is simultaneously mysterious and symbolic. The Shadow doesn't even appear in Stein's cover painting.

2/28/2021, 3:30:15 AM

The April 1944 number is a beauty. Modest Stein offers up the traditional Shadow image with red-lined cape billowing behind the Dark Avenger, gliding above what appears to be a hail of bullets. The novel is "Crime Caravan."

2/28/2021, 3:15:38 AM

As the 1940s progressed, Modest Stein's artwork for the Street & Smith pulp line took on more life and fluidity. Sometimes it even bordered on the experimental. We'll begin our look at Stein's cover art for THE SHADOW magazine with three of his more "realistic" covers. Pictured here is his cover for the February 1944 number, a fairly classic rendition of a Shadow cover, complete with red scarf and looming shadow. The Dark Avenger appears tiny here -- a theme repeated in Stein's "voodoo doll" cover of June 1944. But the huge Shadow in the background more than makes up for the perspective of the diminished Shadow, making Stein's entire canvas quite forboding.

2/28/2021, 3:00:51 AM

Although Modest Stein painted the first cover art for Street & Smith's Shadow pulp, it was George Rozen (and to a much lesser extent, his brother, Jerome Rozen) who painted the bulk of the magazine's covers. George would paint just shy of 200 covers for the magazine's run, while Jerome painted four of the pulp's first seven covers. Graves Gladney would follow George Rozen as the Shadow pulp's lead cover artist. Beginning with the April 1, 1939 number and running through the September 15, 1941 issue, Gladney painted sixty covers for the Street & Smith magazine. Rounding out the quartet of leading Shadow cover artists was LOVE STORY great, Modest Stein. Beginning with the magazine's number for March 1943, the artist would paint over forty covers in both the pulp and digest formats. Interestingly, Stein's March 1943 cover resembles an earlier George Rozen cover -- the October 1941 issue. On the latter, the Shadow appears to be jumping from an exploding bridge. It lacks the "technicolor" palette of the Stein cover and the Shadow's arms are raised above his head. There are also a couple of military types shooting at the dark avenger from a nearby building.

2/28/2021, 2:45:52 AM

Technically speaking, Modest Stein was the first cover artist for Street & Smith's Shadow pulp. Entitled THE SHADOW: A DETECTIVE MAGAZINE, the pulp's first issue -- dated April 1931 -- featured a Chinese man in traditional gard, his shadow looming large behind him. The cover art was by Modest Stein. It was, however, a repurposed image that had been used previously. It originally ran as the cover for the October 1, 1919 issue of THE THRILL BOOK, also published by Street & Smith.

2/28/2021, 2:30:41 AM

We'll end tonight's Modest Stein marathon with one of his more experimental paintings from the 1940s. It's the cover art for the February 1945 issue of DOC SAVAGE, the Street & Smith hero pulp. It illustrates the novel, "Strange Fish." Tune into the PulpFest Instagram page on Saturday night for a look at some of Modest Stein's cover paintings for THE SHADOW. And remember, visit pulpfest.com for "PulpFest Historical — Modest Stein — From Anarchist to Artist," a substantial look at the artist and his work written by Laurie Powers.

2/27/2021, 4:00:33 AM

In the fall of 1943, Modest Stein took over Emery Clarke's spot as the cover artist for the Street & Smith hero pulp, DOC SAVAGE. Pictured here is the artist's cover painting for the June 1944 issue, illustrating the novel, "The Pharoah’s Ghost." All told, Modest Stein painted over two dozen covers for Street & Smith's DOC SAVAGE magazine.

2/27/2021, 3:45:33 AM

The 1940s saw Modest Stein adding ASTOUNDING SCIENCE-FICTION, DOC SAVAGE MAGAZINE, NATIONAL MAGAZINE, ROMANTIC RANGE, THE SHADOW, and SPORT STORY MAGAZINE to his artist portfolio. Pictured here is the artist's cover art for the November 1942 ASTOUNDING SCIENCE-FICTION. Stein's painting illustrates Cleve Cartmill's novella, "Overthrow."

2/27/2021, 3:15:03 AM

One of Modest Stein's 1930s covers for LOVE STORY MAGAZINE featuring an adventurous and independent woman who mirrored the “modern girl” lifestyle that was favored by editor Daisy Bacon and her magazine. This one is for the July 17, 1937 number of the bestselling Street & Smith romance pulp.

2/26/2021, 4:00:13 AM

While Modest Stein's 1930s covers for LOVE STORY MAGAZINE often depicted more adventurous and independent women to mirror the “modern girl” lifestyle that was favored by editor Daisy Bacon and her magazine, his paintings for other Street & Smith titles seemed to grow more vivid or action-packed. Pictured here is Modest Stein's cover for the October 1, 1933 issue of Street & Smith's COMPLETE STORIES, reflecting both the vividness and action-packed qualities of the artist's 1930s cover paintings.

2/26/2021, 3:20:02 AM

Daisy Bacon became editor of LOVE STORY MAGAZINE in 1928 and began to institute changes in the magazine's themes. As Bacon wrote for THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER: ". . . the young man in love no longer asks, 'Can she bake a pie?' What he wants to know is 'How much does she earn?'" Bacon's LOVE STORY modeled her own beliefs" "Today's fifty-fifty girl knows how to be a business woman in business hours and an alluring wife after five o'clock." Modest Stein's cover art likewise reflected Bacon's beliefs, emphasizing happy and successful women who were equals with their romantic counterparts. Pictured here is Stein's cover art for the March 10, 1934 LOVE STORY MAGAZINE.

These are Swedish pulps from the 1950s. Many of the covers are redrawn versions of US pulp covers. Another common practice was to use an interior illustration from a US pulp and color it for the Swedish cover. Most of the stories are also from US pulps. The first two images are repainted from art by H.J. Ward. I am not sure who the artist is for the 3rd and 4th images. The 5th image is a repainting of a Rudolph Belarski cover for The Black Bat and the last is a repainting if a Doc Savage cover by Modest Stein. In his new magazine, Campbell tried to give fantasy his own stamp: "UNKNOWN is not going to be science fiction, nor is it going to be another WEIRD TALES. That’s genuinely fact; not a boast . . . For one thing, the requirements so far as quality of writing go are going to be considerably stiffer than those in any science fiction or weird magazine now running . . . I want simple, clear and direct writing. You can’t convince a man of normal intelligence of something he knows darn well is cockeyed by any amount of argument. On the other hand, he’ll accept any premise you want to set up for the sake of a story. Therefore, magic is acceptable if you say it’s magic, and simply say that magic works. Period. You can’t convince him it does, but he’ll go along with you for the fun of it.” The lead story for the October 1939 UNKNOWN -- featuring a cover by the longtime pulp artist Modest Stein -- was written by Campbell himself. He used his old pseudonym: Don A. Stuart.

𝙈𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙞𝙣 .
