Reflecting on this picture with Ezra, it’s clear he was more than just my buddy. He walked with me through life's milestones—from vet school in Canada to California sunsets and a residency at UC Davis, from my wedding to the first steps of my children. 2024 has come in blazing! My bestie Sher experienced a chimney fire that caused extensive damage. Luckily her new rescue cat rescued her! She was sound asleep when the flames were 8 feet high in the room next door. Boy, as she lovingly calls him, kept kneading her legs until she woke up. If the shock of seeing fire in and around the woodstove wasn't enough, it was the night of a storm and she had no power = NO lights, phone, or water! She (age 75) had to run to her neighbors in her pajamas at 11:30 pm to bang on their door for them to call 911. Life is full of uncertainty, challenge, and struggle. All this week we will be spotlighting special stories of pets that live at the “See Me Home- Senior Dog Sanctuary” “Jude was found in October of 2020, paralyzed in a ditch in Twiggs County, Georgia. With the help of Crystal Vargas and Guardians of Rescue, he was saved and taken in for initial medical care. A short time later, Jude made the first leg of travel to his layover with Dakota Fultz and Adoption First Animal Rescue in Kentucky. We did all the therapies we could try for a Jude. Acupuncture, chiropractic, water therapy, laser... At one point he stayed at King Veterinary Clinic for three days straight where he received therapy three times a day, as we all watched and waited for a sign of hope or healing for his paralysis. Jude’s spirit and personality remained unmatched as he dealt with everything we put him through. What came along with his therapy was the constant wrapping, treating, and rewrapping of his battered, useless legs. The drag sores were constant, the wraps trapped moisture and created worse sores. We tried leggings, drag bags, socks...I spent nights sewing together things I thought would work, but nothing did. His legs, with poor circulation and constant pressure, started to rot. With no progress throughout the therapy and the constant digression of the health in his legs, I started researching other options. I went back to conversing with Dakota who has a dog that’s been profoundly successful following her bilateral rear amputation, and as I researched other paralyzed dog groups, I found there were many more who had taken that route with grand success. Surgery date was set. It’s the best thing we ever could have done for him. Healing was slow and progress was made with bated breath. We reintroduced him to the yard in his wheelchair, which he met with tolerance but not excitement. Jude found freedom on his own. There isn’t a set of stairs he can’t do and very few dogs he can’t outrun. He is full of life and one of the happiest dogs we have yet to welcome into our home, and we are so glad he is here.”

Today we celebrate International blind dog and more importantly one of our very special clients Shiloh. Shiloh who lives with mom Judy, was born on the 6th August 2018, lost both her eyes on the 26th July 2022 due to glaucoma and other complications, which her vet suspected may have been hereditary. Judy took Shiloh to the vet as soon as she noticed a change in her eyes, initially the condition was treated with drops but unfortunately the glaucoma got worse and due to the pain she was under, the decision was made to remove both her eyes. After spending a few weeks recovering and letting her other senses strengthen, Shiloh returned to daycare and has not looked back since. She happily gets around at home and at daycare. She has 4 siblings (Shae, Toby, Oreo and Marmite) who keep a close watch on her at all times. She is the sweetest girl, who loves a good scratch behind the ears and of course any treats on offer. She prefers to ride up front in first class when possible, away from her very busy siblings. Affectionately referred to as “The 5” by FurKidzFerry staff. 🌟 A Concerning Discovery Maple's journey began when she visited Dr Kate for her complimentary puppy check. During the examination, a grade 5 heart murmur was detected, indicating a potential underlying issue with her heart. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Dr Kate immediately recommended a referral to a specialist cardiologist, Dr Mariko @northsidevetspecialists for further evaluation. 🩺 Diagnosis and Treatment Under the expert care of Dr Mariko, an echocardiogram revealed that Maple had a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), a congenital heart condition where a blood vessel that should have closed after birth remained open. This caused blood to flow in an abnormal manner, putting stress on Maple's heart. After a few days, Maple went into heart failure and was taken to the emergency vet hospital. A decision was made to proceed with major open-heart surgery to correct the PDA. The surgical procedure was complex, but Maple's determination to overcome this challenge was nothing short of inspiring. 🌈 The Road to Recovery Today, we are delighted to share the fantastic news that Maple has made a full recovery. 🏥 Why Early Intervention Matters Maple's case is a testament to the importance of early detection and intervention in addressing heart conditions in such young puppies.
