This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot over the last couple of weeks. . . What is it with some online marketing that really makes me uncomfortable? That makes me say – NOPE! It’s usually when it’s offering something that seems too good to be true. . . “How my. . . earned me £10k overnight” Or when it’s guilt trippy, like. . . “If you really care about your business, then do this. . .” Now, maybe these people really did make £10k overnight. . . but I suspect a lot of hours and possibly years went into it before that. If it was that easy, we’d all be loaded, right? And there probably is something else you could be doing in your business to make it more profitable, run more smoothly, feel simpler. But just because you don’t have the time or headspace to do said thing right now, doesn’t mean you don’t care. Hard sales and pushy tactics have never been for me. . . And that’s why I love working with outdoor businesses. It’s a kind and truthful space that feels supportive and inclusive, which I adore. And yes, these businesses still need to market themselves – hi, that’s what my job is 😅 But there’s little room for false promises and bully tactics when you’re inviting people to something like a camping weekend. I’m here for all the real stuff, the messy stuff and of course – the fun stuff. As life asked me to take a little break I intentionally slowed down more. It’s always how I receive my most magical moment of clarity… Every time I just slightly fall back into “old” business strategies - because let’s be real, they are still everywhere promoted by the algorithm and ads - I start to not enjoy my business as much. Something starts to feel off. And once I’m back doing business MY WAY the joy and spark comes back. Myself and the majority of my clients have had a fair amount of trial and error investing into “this is the one way to success” formulas, and at some point we gotta chose. I decide to chose my way and what feels authentic to me - that means having a lot of courage to go against the grain. And with my clients we do exactly that, we work on building a business that feels fun and joyful as a priority. Because if it doesn’t, what’s the point? Hence you won’t see me plaster big money wins as client success stories - I will tell you how freaking aligned my clients feel and how much they enjoy showing up in their business while spending more time on things that matter to them - like gardening, spending time with friends and cooking delicious food with their hot husbands! I hate to admit it but… I was a serious teacher’s pet at school 😂 I went from school straight into being a workaholic with a job that became so wrapped up in my identity I didn’t know who I was when I wasn’t working.  For me the common thread was validation. From a very young age, I learnt to crave academic validation, which then turned into chasing perfection, which to no one’s surprise eventually led to being very burnt out in a job I was overcommitted to.  When I started my own business, I worried about where I would find that sense of validation- how would I know I was working hard enough, and that the outcome of the work I was doing was actually good? Snails often get a bad rap, don’t they? You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘going at a snail’s pace,’ typically used to criticize something or someone for moving too slowly, perhaps not meeting the usual standards of speed in business or creative pursuits. That phrase resonates when you think about many entrepreneurs and musicians, including the iconic Grateful Dead. While they were in the thick of creating and performing, their progress might have seemed painstakingly slow, almost like a ‘snail’s pace.’ I just finished listening to “Marketing Lessons From The Grateful Dead by David Meerman Scott and Brian Halligan.” And what a story. The Grateful Dead was at the forefront of changing the music industry. They loved “Innovating and Changing” the status quo business models in the music industry at that time. They loved performing live concerts, so they decided to make money from them and sell merchandise directly to their fans. They made more money by touring, selling out concerts, and selling merchandise than any other band touring. This is what snails, the Grateful Dead, and cassette tapes all have in common. 🙂 - Go at your own pace to create success (Stop beating yourself up for how long it’s taking.), - When you tap into your genius, no one can stop you. And even prouder of what you say about us. Thanks Elliott! “hi Elliott, I’m the founder and designer of it! I’ll never directly knock another brand, because that’s crass. But I would take on any CG jacket with great confidence. CG do 6 sizes between 36” and 56” chest. We do 11. Far more specific increments. They mostly use more fragile synthetic outer fabrics. We only use tough ones, like those British Millerain dry waxed (you can machine wash it) waxed cotton. They use down filing, which is cruel, hard to care for, bunches and degrades. We use Primaloft, which is far more practical and low volume. Their jacket are big and voluminous. Ours are neater and more stylish (in my wildly biased, but agreed upon by our customers, who leave CG for us in ever greater numbers). Our service and after care are exceptional. The pockets are bigger and tougher. They’re rare not ubiquitous. We are a family business only owned by me, my best mate and our customers. They are owned by US private investment fund Bain Capital. They want ever increasing massive profits. I want to protect our reputation long term and buy a treehouse for me and the kids. (Mostly me). Oh, and we’re just miles better. I’ve been wondering how you run a business that is genuine and personal, how you share creativity in a healthy way… without breaking down also healthy boundaries and losing your life to the content machine? ⚖️ BALANCE— what does it mean to balance priorities of family, work, church, and ministry? How can I live a life that isn’t just divided into sharp categories, but also isn’t a rat race from one thing to the next? 👩🏼‍❤️‍👨🏼 MARRIAGE— what does growth look like both personally and together? How can we carry the strength of one season into the change of another one? (aka going from married without kids to married with kids). As someone who’s worked in marketing and events for… well…. a very long time, it is always a total treat to be on the other side. I had the total pleasure of being a delegate at the inaugural Partner Conference for an incredible product business where they launched their new product to their Channel. It’s not yet hit the market yet but I’m super excited to be a part of the ride when it does. This served as a great reminder of the power of events. Why? Here are just a few reasons why they’re soooo good… ⚡️ Communicate several messages at once to a highly targeted audience ⚡️ Facilitate the deepening of relationships ⚡️ Instigate feedback and research ⚡️ Create on the spot action plans to move things forward (for example there are a few immediate things I’ll be working on next week as a direct result of this event. All of these ‘things’ will help generate future revenue. Not to mention, events are a huge content generating activity too. UGC as well as original content that the host can use in its own marketing efforts. No matter your business, there is always a place for events in the marketing mix. The trick? Doing these for a reason, not just because. This one? Be yourself and the sales will follow… Starting any business online can be very challenging all on its own. Then you add the doom scroll and comparing yourself to other accounts…it can become overwhelming very quickly. I feel like since MRR started a little over a year ago, it has become more feasible to earn a little extra income online. I’m not saying it’s easy, but it is possible. People are starting from zero with absolutely no experience whatsoever in changing their lives in this business. I will say….it does take some time. It takes grit, determination, persistence, and a little sweat equity. But we are fortunate to be in an industry here where you can take a product that you didn’t have to create yourself and earn 100% profit. I don’t know what other industry would allow for such a business model. It’s fantastic. The opportunities here are endless. If you are just thinking about starting in this space, or are a newer account, or I’ve been doing this for a while…here is my best piece of advice. JUST KEEP GOING. Keep taking a chance on yourself. You will never know what’s possible in this space unless you try. I know that there are hard days. But it’s just important to keep pushing. Regardless of what kind of business, you run…brick and mortar, online…whatever it is…there are going to be hard days. There are going to be days that you are going to want to quit. However, the people who succeed are the people that keep going. Keep your chin up. It’s worth it. I promise. Being tired isn’t new. 🫠 I listened to a podcast last week (hellooo @theheartuniversity !!) that talked about how the trend toward homesteading and homemaking is a trend, yes… but also additional indication of how tired we are of loud, gimicky marketing. People are increasingly drawn to slow and basic. Maybe it started to come to a head in 2020, but it’s only grown since then. We want people to be honest with us, to connect with us, not JUST sell things to us however they can. (Of course the trend toward homesteading/ “trad” lifestyle has its own whole universe of marketing things but that is a WHOLE other conversation 👀) Anywho the podcast made me smile, because that drive toward rest and connection is one of the main motivations for me to write copy that is clear and ethical. I’m convinced that there’s no need to make your dream clients more tired! Don’t hide things. Be forthright! It will make their lives better— they won’t have to deal with the pressure of being squeezed into something. It will make YOUR life better— you won’t have to feel sneaky or slimy when you talk about what you have to sell. Sounds like a win all around. 🙌🏼 And I’m curious— what are some ways you implement the slower/more basic/more whole-person oriented … into your marketing? Or your business in general?
