Die griechisch-orthodoxe Kirche St. Johannes der Täufer (Istorikós Naós Agíou Ioánni) in Korfu-Stadt, Griechenland. Die Geschichte der Basilika reicht bis ins Jahr 1480 zurück, sie ist damit die älteste Kirche der Stadt. Man kann nur die nördliche Seite sehen; die übrigen Seiten sind von anderen Gebäuden zugebaut. Bei der Kirche handelt sich um eine einschiffige Basilika mit einem äußeren Narthex. Sie beherbergt Reliquien des Johannes des Täufers und Ikonen von Tzanes und Chrysoloras, von zwei größten korfiotischen Künstlern. Das heutige Aussehen bekam die Kirche nach Renovierungsarbeiten im 18.Jh. Die Kirche ist die einzige Kirche in Korfu-Stadt, die die Kanzel an der Südwand hat (Foto 7). ✝️ Σήμερα εορτάζουμε την Κυριακή της Σαμαρείτιδος! ✝️ Χριστὸς Ἀνέστη! Έρχεται ο Κύριος σε μια πόλη της Σαμάρειας που λέγεται Σιχάρ. Έρχεται εκεί μια γυναίκα από τη Σαμάρεια να πάρει νερό και ο Κύριος, της ζήτησε νερό. «Αν γνώριζε, τη δωρεά του Θεού, ποιός είναι αυτός που σου ζητά να πιεί νερό, εσύ θα του ζητούσες και θα σου έδινε ζωντανό νερό.» Ο Κύριος επιβεβαίωσε ότι αν γνώριζε θα γινόταν μέτοχος πραγματικά ζωντανού νερού. Όταν άκουσε ότι το «νερό που θα σου δώσω» θα γίνει πηγή που τρέχει προς αιώνια ζωή, άφησε λόγο ψυχής που ποθεί και οδηγείται προς τη πίστη και ζήτησε να το λάβει για να μη ξαναδιψήσει. Ο Κύριος θέλοντας να αποκαλύπτεται λίγο λίγο, της λέγει να φωνάξει τον άνδρα της, γνωρίζοντάς της πόσους άνδρες είχε και αυτόν που έχει τώρα δεν είναι δικός της. Βλέπετε πόση είναι η μακροθυμία και η φιλομάθεια αυτής της γυναίκας; Πόση συλλογή και γνώση είχε στη διάνοιά της, πόση γνώση της θεόπνευστης Γραφής; Και αμέσως τον ρωτά που πρέπει να λατρεύεται σωστά ο Θεός, εδώ σ’ αυτό το τόπο ή στα Ιεροσόλυμα; Και τότε παίρνει τη απάντηση, ότι έρχεται η ώρα οπότε ούτε στο όρος αυτό ούτε στα Ιεροσόλυμα θα προσκυνήτε τον Πατέρα. Παντού είναι ο Θεός όχι μόνο εδώ στη γη αλλά και υπεράνω της γης, Πατήρ ασώματος και κατά τον χρόνο και σε τόπο αόριστος. Η Σαμαρείτιδα καθώς άκουσε από το Χριστό αυτά τα εξαίσια και θεοπρεπή λόγια, αναπτερωμένη, μνημονεύει τον προσδοκώμενο και ποθούμενο Μεσσία, τον λεγόμενο Χριστό που όταν έρθει θα μας τα διδάξει όλα. Μόλις την είδε ο Κύριος τόσο θερμή της λέγει απροκάλυπτα: Εγώ είμαι ο Χριστός, που σου μιλώ. Εκείνη γίνεται αμέσως εκλεκτή ευαγγελίστρια και αφήνοντας τη υδρία και το σπίτι της τρέχει και παρασύρει όλους τους Σαμαρείτες πρός το Χριστό και αργότερα με τον υπόλοιπο φωτοειδή βίο της (ως Αγία Φωτεινή) σφραγίζει με το μαρτύριο την αγάπη της προς τον Κύριο. St Fillan, in common with many of the Scottish church fathers, was actually born in Ireland. The story goes that his mother was St Kentigerna, later the foundress of a religious community at Loch Lomond. St Fillan arrived in Scotland with his mother, his brothers and his uncle, St Comgan. The family settled at Loch Duich, before St Fillan moved south to what is now Strathfillan where the first of many legends relating to him arises. While engaged in building a church near Auchentyre a wolf killed the ox which had been carrying building materials. According to the story, Fillan managed to persuade the wolf that it was following the wrong path whereupon the wolf took up the burden of the ox. The Holy Pool next to the church was used as a shrine to the saint for many centuries after. St Fillan had a bit of the wanderlust in him, as it seems he travelled extrensively through Scotland. As well as his stays near Killin and in Fife, he is also known to have spent time in Islay, Perthshire and in Dumfries and Galloway. Die dreischiffige Basilika wurde 1869 erbaut. Die Kirche ist verputzt und gelb gestrichen. Das Satteldach ist mit Dachziegeln bedeckt, der Glockenturm an der Südseite hat eine rote Zwiebelhaube, die mit einem Kreuz bekrönt ist. Der geostete Chor ist gerade geschlossen und an ein anderes Gebäude angebaut. Die Kirche verfügt über eine beeindruckende hölzerne vergoldete Ikonostase mit interessanten Ikonen aus dem 19.Jh. Μια ασθενής γιαγιά, πήγαινε στην Παναγία της Τήνου κάθε χρόνο. Πολλοί την έβλεπαν να κλαίει μπροστά στην εικόνα της Παναγίας, αλλά πάντα έφευγε χαρούμενη. Κάποιοι την ρώτησαν: - Γιαγιά σε βλέπουμε τόσα χρόνια να είσαι ασθενής και να έρχεσαι εδώ στην Παναγία. Δεν κουράστηκες να έρχεσαι συνεχώς στην Παναγία και να της ζητάς να γίνεις καλά και να μην σε κάνει; - Κάνετε λάθος! Δεν ζητάω ποτέ από την Παναγία να με κάνει καλά... - Μας κοροϊδεύεις; Αφού σε βλέπουμε συνεχώς να κλαίς... - Παιδιά μου, αυτά είναι δάκρυα ευχαριστίας! - Ευχαριστείς την Παναγία που είσαι άρρωστη; - Όχι! Την ευχαριστώ που είμαι ασθενής! Την ευχαριστώ, που δεν έχω γογγύσει για την ασθένειά μου! Την ευχαριστώ, που δεν έχω χάσει το μυαλό μου από την ασθένειά μου! Την προσκυνώ και φεύγω... Μεγάλο πράγμα αυτό! Να έχεις ανάγκη και να μη ζητάς απολύτως τίποτα! Σημαίνει πως είσαι υπεράνω όλων αυτών των πραγμάτων και το μόνο που ζητάς είναι να γίνει το θέλημα του Κυρίου... The Holy Icon of Saint Barbara is filled with symbolism - the Orthodox tradition of iconography ensures that even the faithful who cannot read or write can still look at an icon and know exactly which saint they are viewing and what the saint’s story is. Saint Barbara holds a cross in her right hand, indicating her martyrdom for Christ, and her head in her left arm, indicating the method by which she was martyred. In the bottom right of the icon, she kneels during the act of being beheaded. She wears blue on the inside and red on the outside, indicating that she began her life in the world (represented by the blue) and, through her martyrdom, took on divinity (represented by the red). Saint Barbara also wears a crown, indicating her high status in earthly society. On the left side of the icon is the bathhouse into which Saint Barbara directed the builders to carve the three windows in honor of the Holy Trinity. Saint Barbara was from Heliopolis of Phoenicia (in modern-day Lebanon) and lived during the reign of Roman Emperor Maximian. She was the daughter of a pagan named Dioscorus. When Barbara came of age, she was enlightened by belief in the Holy Trinity. Her father built a bathhouse, which during the Roman period was a major financial undertaking made by benefactors to increase their personal standing with the public. During construction, Barbara directed the builders to cut three windows, as opposed to the two planned by her father, in honor of the Holy Trinity. When Dioscorus discovered three windows had been cut, he asked why the third was added. Barbara declared to her father the mystery of the Holy Trinity, enraging him. Dioscorus ordered his daughter to renounce her faith, which she refused, and he subjected Barbara to torture and beheading by his own hands, in the year 290 AD. Like the modern Greek monarchy, the major cathedral in Athens is also not old. In 1833 with the establishment of the Kingdom of Greece , the new government decided to form its own church and broke away from the Patriarch of Constantinople. The cornerstone of the new cathedral was laid in the presence of king Otto on Christmas Day 1842. The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annunciation was built in several stages and four architects worked on its construction : Danish architect Theophil von Hansen , Greek architect Dimitrios Zezos , French architect Francois Boulanger and Greek Architect Panagiotis Kalkos. Marble from 72 demolished churches was used to build the cathedral. On May 21 , 1862, the completed cathedral was dedicated to the annunciation of Virgin Mary in the presence of King Otto and Queen Amalia. The exterior of cathedral is simply Byzantine - modern style with two bell towers. One of our beautiful new icon themes is of Saint Stephen, the First Martyr of the Orthodox Church. Saint Stephen was a Judean living in the Hellenic provinces of the Roman Empire and in fact he was related to the Apostle Paul. He was one of the first seven deacons ordained by the Apostles to serve the Church in Jerusalem, described in Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 6, where the Apostles appointed seven deacons to minister to the needs of the poor. In addition to Saint Stephen’s philanthropy, the Holy Spirit worked powerfully through his faith, enabling him to perform miracles and defeat the Jews who disputed him. The Jews spread hatred of and lies about Saint Stephen to the people, but his faith overcame these lies and hatred, even as Saint Stephen rebuked the Jews for killing Jesus Christ. Saint Stephen’s words enraged the people so much that they killed him, dragging him out of the city and stoning him. Saint Stephen, in keeping with the teachings of Christ, said as his final words, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” Falling asleep, Saint Stephen became the first martyr for the Church, about one year after Pentecost. May we all have the boldness and faith of Saint Stephen! He is depicted here in our icon, wearing the vestments of a deacon, holding a censer and a church building, the former portraying his status as a deacon, the latter an indication of the role he played in establishing the foundations of the Church. Finally, he is shown smooth-faced and with a full head of hair, to mark his young age at the time of his falling asleep in Christ. Χριστός Ανέστη! Τα βυζαντινά χρόνια, η εορτή της Μεσοπεντηκοστής ήταν η μεγάλη εορτή της Μεγάλης Εκκλησίας της Κωνσταντινουπόλεως και συνέτρεχαν κατ’ αυτή στον μεγάλο ναό πλήθη λαού. Δεν έχει κανείς παρά να ανοίξει την Έκθεση της Βασιλείου Τάξεως (Κεφ. 26) του Κωνσταντίνου Πορφυρογεννήτου για να δει το επίσημο τυπικό του εορτασμού, όπως ετελείτο μέχρι την Μεσοπεντηκοστή του έτους 903 μ.Χ. στον ναό του Αγίου Μωκίου στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, μέχρι δηλαδή την ημέρα που έγινε η απόπειρα κατά της ζωής του αυτοκράτορα Λέοντα ΣΤ’ του Σοφού (11 Μαΐου 903 μ.Χ.). Εκεί υπάρχει μία λεπτομερής περιγραφή του λαμπρού πανηγυρισμού, που καταλαμβάνει ολόκληρες σελίδες και καθορίζει με την γνωστή παράξενη βυζαντινή ορολογία, πως ο αυτοκράτωρ το πρωί της εορτής με τα επίσημα βασιλικά του ενδύματα και την συνοδεία του ξεκινούσε από το ιερό παλάτι για να μεταβεί στον ναό του αγίου Μωκίου, όπου θα ετελείτο η θεία λειτουργία. Σε λίγο έφθανε η λιτανεία με επί κεφαλής τον πατριάρχη, και βασιλεύς και πατριάρχης εισήρχοντο επισήμως στον ναό. Η θεία λειτουργία ετελείτο με την συνήθη στις μεγάλες εορτές βυζαντινή μεγαλοπρέπεια. Μετά από αυτήν ο αυτοκράτωρ παρέθετε πρόγευμα, στο οποίο έπαιρνε μέρος και ο πατριάρχης. Και πάλι ο βασιλεύς υπό τις επευφημίες του πλήθους «Εἰς πολλούς καί ἀγαθούς χρόνους ὁ Θεός ἀγάγει τήν βασιλείαν ὑμῶν» και με πολλούς ενδιαμέσους σταθμούς επέστρεφε στο ιερό παλάτι.
