Ze moesten voor hem een polsklokje ontwerpen dat er niet alleen koninklijk uitzag, maar ook nog waterbestendig was. De sultan hield namelijk van wat baantjes trekken in het water en wilde dan graag weten hoe laat het was. Bijna onmogelijk, maar het lukte ze toch. Daarmee is dit koninklijke horloge, dat de naam Pasha de Cartier kreeg, het eerste waterbestendige uurwerk van het juwelenhuis. Hoewel het dus al eerder was ontworpen, kwam het in 1943 in de collectie. Gérald Genta ontwierp een nieuwe versie in 1985. Het ⌚️ dat je hier ziet is te bekijken bij @BruensJuwelier uit Amsterdam. Het heeft een horlogekast van 18 karaats geelgoud en een lederen band. In totaal heeft het juweel een diameter van 38 mm en is het glas gemaakt van saffierglas. There is a world full of dreamers, but only few can make them come true. Gerald Genta was one of those magicians. He would create more unique designs in a year than other brands have in their entire lineup. Collectors are often focused on the icons, but for me the real magic is hiding among the outliers. As the genius was always experimenting with shapes and materials, there is lots of different and exciting variation to be found. Besides their cool looks, there is always an extreme level of detail and finishing to be observed. The cases are heavy, the dials are exceptional, and the fonts and engravings are always on point. In addition, Genta is one of the few who always took straps and buckles into consideration in his designs. Exhibit A A heavy 18kt yellow gold chronograph with so called ‘bomba’ lugs. At 34mm, the case size is optimal, especially given the substantial lugs. An outstanding Mother of Pearl dial, that makes the object come to live. The typography is clean and minimal. Sporting organically shaped hands, which we know from other important Genta designs. Nicely aged tritium plots serve as hour markers. The date is placed at the six o’clock position, so that it doesn’t ruin the symmetry. Prominent pushers and a big ribbed crown compliment the lugs, creating an impressive case profile. The shark skin strap continues the lines initiated in the lugs, which makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. The lightly rounded gold pin buckle ties it all together. For a variety of reasons, the 38mm AP ROC with the grey dial is my favorite watch. I love the size, feel, and finish, and I love the look of the grey dial against the stainless steel case and bracelet. After wearing the Royal Oak for a couple of weeks, the sobering verdict is: it feels cheap, and flimsy. Why: When I had the bracelet adjusted, the watch felt so light to the shop assistant she asked me if it was fake. I took it to the chin, but deep inside I had to acknowledge she had a point. The design and finishing are untouched of course, but the hands and markers feel like an afterthought (the seconds hand is stamped and looks literally unfinished), the blue of the dial is an oddly vulgar tone and the clasp is the most uncomfortable I’ve ever worn. The fact that modern iterations lack hacking seconds, a date quickset and water resistance make the package feel like a bit of a p!ss-take. To add insult to injury, the media have become so saturated with the design that it doesn’t feel like an extravagance any more, but rather as a boring, conformist choice. Add to that that it feels incredibly fragile and the whole wearing experience becomes oddly dissatisfying and dull. Prototype vs Finale Version 👑 The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date ref. 1530 was a transitional watch - produced in less than 1500 units and not appearing in the Rolex catalogue back in the days - using the brand new design of the Oysterquartz 17000 but integrating an automatic calibre 1570. The quartz calibre 5035 (and 5055 in the Day-Date Oysterquartz) were not ready in the mid 70's so Rolex decided to use their brand new design with old tech inside! Here’s something special: A 2022 Octo Finissimo Sejima Edition, ref 103710, one of 360 made. The Sejima Edition was inspired by a mirror train, also conceived by Pritzker-winning Japanese architect Kazuyo Sejima, back in 2018 and began running the next year. This watch is one of the more interesting concepts of recent times: the “luxury” side of “steel luxury watch” to an absurd degree, the thinnest watch made even more invisible, and a watch that barely registers the time. This one is a futurist mirror, the only occlusion to the full-polished surfaces is the special crystal flecked with a dot pattern designed by Sejima to echo the pattern on the mirror trains. It’s a study in contrasts: a watch with a nearly blank face, a steel watch in full polish, an “invisible” watch that reflects light like a beacon. A gorgeous collision of Italian and Japanese design.
