This beautifully crisp example is executed in stainless steel, with applied hour markers and hands in gold. In addition to golden dial fixtures, the gilt writing further complements a stunning black dial that has warm and attractive elements of tropicalization. This Tri-Compax (ref. 22279) is powered by the cal. 481, and it features a Portuguese calendar. Eric Wind identifies the punch mark on the upper left lug as a Portuguese import hallmark, which confirms this provenance. Exemplary. Universal.

Maximizing the 36 hours I had in Hong Kong was pretty cool. The first thing I did right after touch-down was to seal the deal for the watch. Having settled in my tiny, cosy apartment conveniently located just next to Jordan MTR Station, I went exploring the streets. One thing I had to go for was the cha chaan teng ('tea restaurant' or Hong Kong-style cafe/diner) experience where objectively, it's all about the food, not about the service. It is essentially an East-meets-West blend of cuisine such as toast of some sorts, coffee and tea, and simple bites in a casual setting with fast service and affordable prices. And because of that, you got to decide quickly, eat and take your leave - no nonsense. I did just that and I was fine. Of course, I visited a couple of Patagonia boutiques. Then I stumbled upon @funshop_outdoor in Mongkok where they carry a wide range of outdoor products from various brands. The last remaining piece of the @snowpeak_official Field Barista Kettle ('Made In Japan' version) was on massive discount and I had to grab it. What a find! The folks there were really friendly and we had a nice little conversation. My main mode of transport getting around was the via subway (using the Octopus card to pay, which was really convenient) and a lot of walking. The temperature was between 18 to 22 degrees and it was overall very comfortable and cooling. Travelled with my trusty Mystery Ranch Scape Artist pack with absolute ease and comfort. Of course, I couldn't contain the excitement of taking pictures with the watch and that took quite a bit of time too. With a twist of fate, a timepiece, and the alignment of the stars, I found myself in Hong Kong for my first time ever, for exactly 36 hours. The Rolex Explorer has always been my grail. Frankly, a 1016 would have done it. Yep, had a 1975 1016 but as I learnt more about vintage timepieces, I realized I couldn't unsee the things that bugged the hell out of me. So I had to learn an expensive lesson. Passed the watch back to the dealer who sold me with a huge cut. Ouch indeed! Told myself to be patient and learn the lessons, and ever since, I have been keeping a lookout for another worthy vintage Explorer that hopefully can become an heirloom piece one day. And yes, condition is king. Came across many vintage Explorers and missed a couple of really nice ones. Then I came across this particular 6610 on a wider platform. Circa 1957, with original radium dial, gilt letterings and hands (only 6610s between 1957 to 1958 come with the big lollipop seconds hand in white). Honest condition with thick lugs for a watch over 6 decades and counting. The original brevet crown is also period-on-point for pre-1960 watches. It was love at first sight. And by sheer luck, a few months later, I came across the owner of this watch on IG. No way this happened. Thereafter, I sought all the help I could get to vet the watch. Got the green light (and confidence). Flew to Hong Kong. Met the owner. Saw the watch in person. Did the list of checks and sealed the deal. And then had lunch with him and his family, which was really nice. Also managed to visit The Vintage Concept, a well-established vintage watch shop in Hong Kong, Central. There are some insane pieces in there. Incredibly cool. I still couldn't believe it. To kind souls who have rendered assistance, and you know who you are, I cannot thank you enough. You have all my gratitude.
