Ten years ago, @jackcarlson’s book Rowing Blazers was published. Originally intended to be a passion project, the book attracted the attention of Ralph Lauren and became a cult classic in the fashion and menswear communities. The book documents the striped, piped, and badged blazers worn at rowing clubs around the world, and the colorful traditions, myths, and rituals that surround them. Of course, the book also laid the foundation for Jack’s brand, also named Rowing Blazers, which in turn has helped change the way people around the world think about the sport and about so-called “preppy” style. The new, revised, and expanded edition of the book has launched worldwide. Ten years ago, Jack Carlson released his richly photographed book “Rowing Blazers” about the history and tradition of the rowing blazer at colleges and clubs around the world. “Rowing. Blazers” is an ode to the striped, piped, and badged garments that epitomize the preppy look, and the colorful myths, rituals, and races associated with them. The book laid the foundation for the Rowing Blazers brand. In 2014, Georgetown Alumni posted this photo of Jack Carlson with the caption: “When it comes to crew, Jack Carlson (F’09) really knows his stuff: once a coxswain and team captain for Georgetown, Jack has gone on to represent the United States at the World Rowing Championships and has won several international regattas. But this Hoya now has a different take on the sport: the role of rowing blazers. Jack has just published a book exploring the intersection of fashion and rowing culture to help showcase the sport’s colorful heritage.” Fast forward a decade later, this week the entrepreneur behind the iconic brand Rowing Blazers made a major announcement: his company has been acquired by Burch Creative Capital. A statement from the founder accompanying the announcement is a testament to the power of trusting one’s instincts and also a testament to the enduring power of preppy style: “Many of our friends advised us, for our own good, not to start the Rowing Blazers brand. “Preppy is over, it’s dead,” they said. What a cozy spot located in a side road in SoHo, Manhattan the @rowingblazers store. The brand, known for its blazers, rugby shirts as well as its colorful garments, can be categorized as a "preppy" style - a slightly more colourful approach to the more traditional Ivy style. I stopped by to check out their newest pieces and went through their great vintage collection in the back of the store. In the middle of my visits, I took the opportunity and sit down and read about Rowing Blazers in this book written by his founder @jackcarlson In tomorrow’s post, I will be posting more pictures of their garments and a video of the store. Arthur Ashe was a tennis player: the first Black man to win the US Open and the Wimbledon, an Olympic champion, and a three-time "Grand Slam" winner. But he was also so much more. Ashe was also a stentorian activist who not only strove against barriers set against his own professional ascent, but also publicly articulated a compelling case against racial injustice and inequality--in his public campaign against the Apartheid and beyond. Perhaps just as importantly, Ashe established Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health a couple of months before his passing. The issues he highlighted in terms of inadequate delivery of and unequal access to health care remain a vital cause for our day. Arthur Ashe passed away from this mortal earth on this day three decades ago. But legends never die. In this magnificent portrait captured by Michael O'Neill in December 1992, Arthur Ashe wears his iconic Rolex Day-Date that has accompanied him through the decades.

* * ON THIS DATE * November 6th, 1979 * Dave Langevin scored his 1st NHL goal. * New York Islanders defeated Los Angeles Kings 4-1 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. * Langevin scored a shorthanded goal against Ron Grahame, assisted by Lorne Henning. * Langevin played 513 games in the NHL with NYI (422GP), Minnesota North Stars (80GP), and LA Kings (11GP). * Langevin was selected in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft by NYI in the 7th round, 112th overall from Minnesota-Duluth. He was also selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1974 WHA Amatuer Draft, 5th round, 67th overall. * Langevin completed 4 years of hockey at Minnesota-Duluth (2 years after being drafted). He then opted to play for the Edmonton Oilers in the WHA for 3 years (216GP). Langevin was reclaimed by NYI when the WHA merged with the NHL for the 1979-80 season. He was on 4 Stanley Cup Championships with the New York Islanders. * Langevin scored his final NHL goal on March 3rd, 1984, at Maple Leaf Gardens. NYI defeated Toronto 11-6. Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier assisted on the goal scored against Allan Bester. (relieved in 3rd by Rick St.Croix) Langevin was a team high +5 for this game. * Langevin played his final NHL game on April 5th, 1987, at Pacific Coliseum. From today until 11/15 I have changed my profile photo in memory of a little boy named Jack Carlson who was born with CHD. As hard as the Drs tried to fix him, God had bigger plans for him. and took him from his parents and the Earth way too early. During his short time on earth he taught many of us about what it means to be a fighter and to live each day to the fullest. His memory lives on in so may ways and I will never forget Jack and cherish the friendship that I have developed with his Mom over the years. #chdawareness #specialhearts♥️ #jackcarlson #inmemoryof

Arthur Ashe, as stylish as ever, posing at the Queen's Club in London (1970). On his wrist is his Rolex Day-Date with the beautiful champagne dial and in its classical proportions. It only makes sense to honor his memory as the @usopen is being played with the Arthur Ashe Stadium as its primary venue (since he was, in 1968, the first winner of the US Open in the open era). Congratulations on that note to @jackcarlson—of @rowingblazers fame—for launching a new lifestyle brand in the name of this larger-than-life athlete and activist! I finished watching “Abducted: Fugitive for Love,” and “Kept Woman” on Amazon Prime last night.
