The Delhi High Court emphasized the importance of gender neutrality in judicial proceedings, stating that courts must not be influenced by stereotypical views regarding gender or profession. This came as the court overturned an order clearing a police officer’s husband of cruelty charges under the Indian Penal Code. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma criticized the lower court’s decision, stating that it was not based on principles of criminal jurisprudence and fair trial but on unjustified biases, particularly the belief that a police officer cannot be a victim of domestic violence. The court stressed that judges must adopt a gender-neutral mindset when crafting judgments, ensuring that their language and reasoning are free from gender-based prejudices. It called for gender sensitivity to be integrated into judicial education, urging the Delhi Judicial Academy to include it in its curriculum. In the case at hand, both the husband and wife were employed by the Delhi Police, yet the lower court unfairly favored the husband based on his professional position while disregarding the wife’s complaints. The court emphasized that professional achievements should enhance, not diminish, an individual’s standing, and noted that despite their success in the workplace, women can still face power imbalances and mistreatment in their personal lives. The High Court asserted that women, regardless of their profession or background, deserve equal respect, recognition, and legal protection. It emphasized that gender equality benefits both men and women and called for a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives to ensure fair and informed judicial decisions, thereby strengthening public trust in the legal system. #DelhiPolice #Delhi #Crime #Ganster #CrimeNews #DelhiNews #DelhiUpdates #DelhiNCRNews #News #LatestNews #Explore #ExplorePage #Media #DelhiMedia #DelhiCoverage

To enhance vigilance and streamline communication among officials during night duties, the Delhi Police has introduced a specialized team known as ‘Delta-48’. This unit, consisting of four personnel, operates as a coordinated force to ensure effective policing during nighttime operations. Delta-48 serves as the designated call sign for these officers, facilitating seamless communication during their patrols and operations. Each police station and district in Delhi has its unique set of call signs for identification and communication purposes. The initiative was launched by Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi), Devesh Kumar Mahla, following his appointment to the position. Comprising constables and head constables, the team operates in rotational shifts within the New Delhi district. Their responsibilities extend beyond mere vigilance; they also provide essential amenities such as tea, snacks, and fluorescent jackets to patrolling staff between 8 pm and 6 am. The New Delhi district, home to key government institutions like the president, prime minister, and parliament, encompasses 10 police stations. Each station is staffed with approximately 100 personnel, including three police inspectors. On April 17, the coordinated efforts of Parliament Street and Kartavya Path police stations led to the apprehension of 28 bikers for reckless driving. DCP Mahla commended the efficacy of the Delta-48 initiative, citing its instrumental role in the swift apprehension of the offenders. He attributed the success to effective communication and coordination among patrolling staff, facilitated by the vigilant monitoring of Delta-48 personnel throughout the night. Under DCP Mahla’s directives, Delta-48 officials are required to make at least two visits to patrolling staff during their shift and submit detailed reports of their observations to the DCP’s office. In a pioneering move, Delhi Police officers will now be permitted to travel on metro trains with weapons during emergencies to circumvent traffic congestion and swiftly reach crisis locations, officials revealed on Friday. The proposal received the green light following discussions between Delhi Police, DMRC, and CISF in a recent meeting. Previously, officers were prohibited from carrying weapons on the metro. A senior Delhi Police official stated that the standard operating procedure (SOP) has been finalized, with potential implementation before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Delhi. The SOP entails notifying DMRC officials about the personnel’s details and purpose of travel, allowing them to bypass token requirements. During crises, a dedicated coach may be allocated to police personnel, who will don uniforms and cover travel expenses. This initiative aims to address challenges faced during riot-like situations, where heavy traffic impedes swift mobilization. Metro lines, which span across Delhi, offer a strategic advantage in expediting response times during emergencies. Additionally, transportation will be arranged for pick-up and drop-off services between metro stations and crisis sites, including deployment of paramilitary personnel if required. #DelhiMetro #Metrotrain #Metro #DelhiPolice #DelhiNews #DelhiUpdates #DelhiNCRNews #News #LatestNews #Explore #ExplorePage #Media #DelhiMedia #DelhiCoverage

A 22-year-old man employed at a renowned eatery in Connaught Place was reportedly murdered by his former employer over a financial disagreement, police said. Sachin Kumar, a waiter at the eatery, was found deceased in Dasna, Uttar Pradesh, with Hashib Khan (31), his former employer, and Khan’s wife, Shamina Begum, arrested in connection with the case. Initial investigations indicate that Kumar, who had a dispute involving Rs 2 lakh with Khan, was allegedly involved in a romantic relationship with Begum. Khan operated a T-shirt manufacturing unit in Sangam Vihar, south Delhi. Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla said that Kumar had been missing since March 31 from Connaught Place, prompting the police to register a case of abduction based on his family’s complaint. Another police official mentioned that the accused revealed Kumar’s alleged involvement with Begum and claimed to have witnessed them in a compromising situation. However, these allegations are currently under investigation. According to Kumar’s elder brother Mohit, who resides in Aligarh, his brother had previously worked at Khan’s factory in Sangam Vihar for about one-and-a-half years. “In February, he left the job due to a financial dispute. Although my brother repaid Rs 1 lakh, they demanded more money,” Mohit explained. He further stated that they frequently threatened his brother, which caused him distress. Police reports indicate that on March 31, Begum summoned Kumar to meet her. Upon meeting her, Begum and her husband allegedly murdered Kumar by slashing his throat. The duo then transported the body in their Maruti Alto car to Dasna, where they disposed of it in a jungle. #Crime #Delhi #Murder #Death #DelhiUpdates #Delhi #DelhiNews #News #LatestNews #Explore #Explore #Media #DelhiMedia #DelhiCoverage

On the occasion of Chaitra Navratri culminating in Ram Navami, Shovana Narayan and ASAVARI Repertory will organise “Ram Aagaman”, a dance presentation on April 9 at Kamani Auditorium. The dance production centres on the effect Lord Ram’s arrival caused in people: such as on Sita, maid Manthra, step-mother Kaikeyi, brother Bharat, on Ravana, the King of Lanka and on the washerman of his kingdom. His arrival stirred up a series of emotions, whereby the absence or the presence of ‘Ramatva’ (noble, sense of duty and accountability) became evident. For Sita, the arrival of Ram in Pushpa Vatika, or in her swayamvar, or on receipt of the news of Ram’s victory over Ravana, and the events that transpired during the Ashwamedha yagna, displayed her selfless devotion as well as her inner strength. The time span in the dance production begins with Lord Ram’s birth to Sita’s disappearance in the womb of Mother Earth. Chaitra Navaratri and Ram Navami: Navaratri is held in the honour of the divine feminine. Chaitra Navaratri marks the beginning of spring in which devotees pay homage to Goddess Durga and seek her blessings for prosperity and good fortune. It ends with the arrival of Vishnu’s 7th avatar, Lord Rama. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been caught in a controversy after Dhananjay, a safai karamchari, allegedly killed himself after blaming his senior officers for torturing and demanding a bribe. The Delhi Safai Karamchari Aayog has demanded probe and strict action against culprits who have been blamed by Dhananjay in a suicide note for demanding Rs 60,000 in exchange for permanent appointment. “My name is Dhananjay. I work in Punjabi Colony. My daroga’s name is Devendra and the inspector is Krishan Kewal. Both are responsible for my death. They are demanding Rs 60,000 in a bribe. So, I am killing myself,” he stated in a suicide note. Dhananjay was working in Narela Zone of MCD for eight years on ‘karuna mulak’ basis (daily wager on compassionate ground) after being appointed in his mother’s place in 2016 following her death. He was living with wife and a five-year-old son on rent at Vijay Chowk in Narela. Rajender Kumar, his elder brother, seconded the allegations made by Dhananjay. “On February 15, I was also present when Devendra and Kewal Krishan demanded a bribe for making him permanent. I’m an eyewitness. He went to them several times but they did not let him join duty, despite him submitting medical and fitness reports. There were many responsibilities on him, like rent, his wife’s treatment. He was also not completely fit,” added Kumar. Dhananjay’s wife Rani has written a letter to the Delhi Safai Karamchari Aayog chief and demanded justice. She wrote that her husband was unable to pay bribe to both the officers due to his dire financial situation. They threatened to make his service record poor. She also alleged that they used derogatory and racist words against the Dhananjay and that he was mentally disturbed and therefore, died by suicide. “Nestled in a plush bean bag beneath the vast expanse of the night sky, I found myself fully immersed in the timeless romance of ‘Notting Hill’ at an open-air cinema. With delectable snacks within arm’s reach and an ambiance of pure cosiness enveloping me, the movie took on an entirely new depth. Surrounded by fellow enthusiasts of the silver screen, we shared laughter, shed tears, and collectively savoured the experience, forging memories that will endure beyond the closing credits,” recounts Kartik Anand, a 28-year-old corporate professional in Gurugram, who recently indulged in the cinematic magic of ‘Notting Hill’ at the DLF CyberHub amphitheatre, which was transformed into a haven for outdoor cinema aficionados by the Sunset Cinema Club. The DLF CyberHub amphitheatre is just one of the many open-air cinemas that have come up in Delhi NCR recently. A Tradition Re-Imagined Open-air cinemas are not new to Delhi. Jatin Parveen, an independent director and writer, highlights, “The history of outdoor cinema in Delhi dates back to the mid20th century. One of the earliest initiatives was the ‘Moonlight Movies’ in the 1950s by the New Delhi Municipal Committee (NDMC). It was aimed at providing entertainment to residents during the summer months by screening films in open-air venues across the city. One such venue was Nehru Park, located in the heart of Delhi. The NDMC organised regular film screenings at Nehru Park, attracting large crowds who enjoyed watching movies under the stars.” Soon, other parks, gardens, and public spaces in Delhi also became popular venues for outdoor cinema events. These screenings were organised by various cultural organisations, film societies, and even commercial entities. These events, which showcased a wide range of films, from classics to contemporary releases, fostered a sense of community among the attendees. @the_tanishaa_saxena Reports #OpenTheatres #OpenCinemas #Cinema #Bollywood #Movies #OpenAirCinemas #DelhiNews #DelhiUpdates #DelhiNCRNews #News #LatestNews #Explore #ExplorePage #Media #DelhiMedia #DelhiCoverage

Shakeel Ur Rehman is among scores of parents eagerly waiting outside National Public School in Daryaganj for their wards to return after completing their annual examination. Tense murmurs are exchanged. But usual examination butterflies are not the only reason for their worries. The school is on the verge of closure after over six decades of existence. “I don’t know where my son will study, now that the exams are about to be over,” says Shakeel. Mohammad Furqan, whose daughter is slated for promotion to class three, recalls how he got to know about the impending closure of National Public School. “On March 7, I received a notice on our WhatsApp group of school management and parents. It stated that the school’s recognition would lapse on March 31 and premises will be shut down on April 1. I simply could not believe it,” says Furqan, clenching his fist. He wonders why school authorities did not inform them about the decision earlier. The new academic session, slated to begin from April, will see the 400-odd students seeking fresh admissions as news around the closure has stunned the local community. “Ever since I received the notice of closure, I have been running around. It is not like it (admission to school) is a straightforward process with these huge donations involved,” says a parent over phone on the condition of anonymity. According to him, the development has left him and his family devastated. “My daughter is very silent these days. These are a child’s developmental years and now she will have to adjust to a new environment, find new friends,” says a worried Furqan. Her presidential debate speech has been viral on social media for the last two days. “The response is very good. We visited all the hostels for campaigning. Earlier students had only two options — Left and Right — but this time they have a third option too, which they were searching for, so they were also happy,” Aradhna told Patriot. About the key issues in the election, Aradhna said, “Although there are many issues, my main focus is on women’s security. I am the sole woman candidate, so I will work for them, their equality besides working for PwD (People with Disability) and other problems.” Link in bio/IG story to read the full story by @tahir_journo #JNU #JNUSU #JNUElection #PWD #JNU #JNUElection #Election #JNUElection2024 #Art #Delhi #DelhiNews #DelhiUpdates #Delhi #DelhiNews #News #LatestNews #Explore #Explore #Media #DelhiMedia #DelhiCoverage

The artist’s ‘Disrupted’ series expresses the trauma that women as well as men go through, faced with the strains of living in a harsh and at times antagonist society that is often unaccepting of the choices they make. Some of the paintings weave narratives around the wider socio-cultural landscape — these include a series of five paintings loosely inspired by Shelley’s poem, ‘Masque of Anarchy’, wherein the poetic imagery is juxtaposed with imagined scenes from current times. Another two satirical works depict the growing obsession with the self, of makeovers, body-shaping and selfies, while another is a tongue-in-cheek image of a cocktail party. “The primary focus of this show is to give imaginative articulation to what I believe are the disruptive and disquieting conditions we are living in. I use a range of devices and visual languages – from mythology and literary references to flora symbolism and human-animal hybrid characters,” says Kaul. He further adds, “I have explored a variety of styles, treatments, and choices of the medium in consonance with my shifting thematic — from heavy, textured layers of acrylic using the palette knife, watercolour, mixed media, to working with thick brushstrokes using oil. I find sticking to a particular style or theme rather constricting, and thus remain free from conservative constraints that can inhibit an artist from innovating, discovering, learning.” When: 11 am to 8 pm; March 26 to March 31, 2024 Where: Visual Art Gallery, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi The show will continue at Urban Fringe – the underground studio F-15 Basement, Okhla Phase I, New Delhi, between April 12 to April 22, 2024 #Exhibition #Art #Delhi #DelhiNews #DelhiUpdates #Delhi #DelhiNews #News #LatestNews #Explore #Explore #Media #DelhiMedia #DelhiCoverage

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections, which are being conducted after a gap of four years, will be held on March 22 with the results of the polls to be declared on March 24. The united front of the Left-leaning organisations had swept the previous elections, held in 2019, with Aishe Ghosh elected as president. Over 7,000 students will cast their vote in the upcoming elections with an eye on various problems in the campus including lack of facilities for disabled students, women’s safety and quality of food. Saurabh Sauhta, a visually impaired student of the Centre for Historical Studies (CHS), drew attention to problems faced by blind students. “The main problem for the visually impaired is the lack of ‘tactile path’ inside the campus. You can’t find it anywhere, even on the main road of the library. PwD (People with Disability) students mainly stay in three hostels — Godavari, Periyar and Kaveri, but there is no tactile path and people are inconvenienced without it,” he told Patriot during a chat at the School of International Studies (SIS) building. In the mesmerising world of Indian classical dance, where grace meets tradition and storytelling transcends time, male dancers often find themselves navigating through a labyrinth of societal stigma and prejudice. Their journey is not just about mastering intricate movements or perfecting expressions; it’s a battle against stereotypes, online trolling, and systemic biases that threaten to stifle their passion and aspirations. For many male dancers, their love for Indian classical dance begins as a childhood dream, fuelled by the enchanting rhythms and narratives woven into the fabric of their culture. However, as they step into the limelight, they are met with a barrage of online trolling and derogatory comments that seek to diminish their identity and belittle their artistry. From questioning their masculinity to ridiculing their choice of profession, these hurtful remarks serve as constant reminders of the societal stigma they must confront. In conversations with several male Indian classical dancers, a common thread emerges: the importance of educating society, particularly parents, about the value of their craft and the emotional toll of discrimination. They share poignant stories of emotional trauma inflicted by family members and society who fail to understand or support their aspirations. The Delhi High Court is set to address Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea for protection from coercive measures in a case linked to the excise policy and money laundering on Thursday. This comes after Kejriwal’s counsel requested a postponement of the matter. The plea for interim relief is part of Kejriwal’s broader petition challenging the summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning. Kejriwal’s latest summons, the ninth from the ED, mandates his appearance before the agency on Thursday. However, he has consistently declined, denouncing the summonses as unlawful. The court had questioned his non-appearance previously, prompting his lawyer, Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, to argue that while Kejriwal is willing to cooperate with the ED, protection from coercive actions is imperative, especially with elections looming. In his petition, Kejriwal has criticized the arbitrary implementation of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), alleging it’s being exploited to skew the electoral process in favor of the ruling party. The case revolves around alleged corruption and money laundering related to the formulation and execution of Delhi’s excise policy for 2021-22, which was later annulled. Notably, AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh are currently in judicial custody as part of this case. Kejriwal’s name has surfaced multiple times in the charge sheets filed by the ED, which alleges that the accused coordinated with Kejriwal to manipulate the excise policy, resulting in undue benefits, and paid kickbacks to the AAP in return. Recently, a Delhi court granted bail to Kejriwal in two complaints filed by the ED for missing six of the prior eight summonses in the money laundering case. #DelhiHighCourt #Kejriwal #ED #liquorcase #AAP #Delhi #DelhiNews #DelhiUpdates #Delhi #DelhiNews #News #LatestNews #Explore #Explore #Media #DelhiMedia #DelhiCoverage #Delhi #DelhiNews #DelhiUpdates #Delhi #DelhiNews #News #LatestNews #Explore #Explore #Media #DelhiMedia #DelhiCoverage

On March 11, the Central government put in place the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rules through which persecuted minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, will be given citizenship. Presently, Delhi serves as home to many Hindus who had fled from Pakistan to evade forced conversions. “They would kill us if we did not agree to get converted,” said a resident at one of the refugee camps at Majnu Ka Tila. Around 150 families have been residing for the past 10 years in these camps, which are spread across the banks of River Yamuna. Many arrived together, spreading across the national capital and the National Capital Region, at the same time, while a few set up their residence in the slums as recently as March 14. Without work and with several mouths to feed, the residents reside in a stupor, expecting the government to help them out with their citizenship woes. Lining up the pavement on the road, the residents selling mobile phone covers and tempered glass showcase their wares in a perpendicular line, one after the other. They haven’t been able to secure steady jobs, owing to a lack of proof of citizenship. @cushionkneeyogi Reports LINK IN BIO FOR FULL STORY #Pakistani #Hindus #Citizenship #DelhiNCR #refugee #camps #employment #Education #CAA #NRC #DelhiNews #DelhiUpdates #DelhiNCRNews #News #LatestNews #Explore #ExplorePage #Media #DelhiMedia #DelhiCoverage

A court in Delhi late on Saturday requested an action taken report from the Delhi Police regarding a petition filed to summon and prosecute a sub-inspector who physically assaulted individuals praying on a street in north Delhi. The incident occurred during Friday prayers around 2 pm on March 8 near the Inderlok Metro Station and was captured on video, subsequently spreading widely across social media platforms. Metropolitan Magistrate Manoj Kaushal stated, “Arguments have been heard. The minimum temperature in Delhi dipped to 13.9 degrees Celsius, slightly below normal, on Friday, with the weather office forecasting strong surface winds during the day. The humidity level, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), stood at 53 percent. Air quality remained in the “moderate” category, showing an improved reading of 139. As one views Anwar’s recent and large body of work, one becomes aware that his search has been to evoke this sense of quietude, and peace, through a delineation of colour geometrical forms and textures. Artist Anwar, (born in 1964 in Ambha, Madhya Pradesh, living and working in Delhi) is of the belief and he approaches his act of painting with a sense of wonderment and discovery that is admirable. His prolific acts of creation are an almost daily engagement with colour on canvas, paper collage or mixed media. They are expressions of art made in the privacy of his studio and he believes them to be ‘an occurrence of intuition’, where one discovers a language that deeply is internal and personal. Made over the last three years it showcases work that Gallery Art Positive Director Anu Bajaj is delighted to showcase. “I have always loved Anwar’s work, his simplicity, his process of creating and his thoughts that translate into his work.” It has been argued by many artists that when one begins to look for a narrative in abstract or a specific meaning, then one loses the entire purpose of appreciating the work of art. Abstract art as we know it is an understanding and visual representation of shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks that does not strive to ‘represent’ the world as we know it, rather it achieves its effect through communicating through a non-narrative, non-representation. Anwar also brings to his work the lyricism of an Indian classical vocalist, Kishori Amonkar, who belonged to the Jaipur Gharana. A suite of paintings dedicated to this singer goes from the whites and greys to light blues and dark browns. It captures the clear tones of the Sur (the melody) to its crescendo and then its melting into the warmth of the next stanza. Anwar has received multiple awards such as All India Kalidas exhibition (1985), Bharat Bhavan Scholarship, Government of India Senior Fellowship (New Delhi, 1996- 97), National Award by Lalit Kala Akademi (New Delhi- 1995), and many more.
