Rescue and recovery efforts have finished at the site of a building collapse in George, South Africa. After 12 days of operations, 33 persons have been confirmed dead, with 19 remaining unaccounted for. The municipality in the Western Cape province confirmed on Friday that the laborious rescue operation had ended. The province Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs, and Development Planning, Anton Bredell confirmed on Friday that 62 workers were on the building site when it collapsed on May 6. 10 people are still in hospital, and 19 people have either been discharged or received on site medical treatment, he added. Five of the 34 people who were successfully rescued died in the hospital as a result of their injuries. Many of the victims were foreign laborers from countries such as Zimbabwe and Malawi. The structure will now be handed over to the national department of employment and labor, which will conduct an investigation into the collapse. During the rescue operation, about 6,000 tons of rubble were cleared by rescue crews. Preliminary findings from the investigation by governmental entities have revealed regulatory and compliance gaps in the construction of the building in George that collapsed last week, killing more than 30 people to date. The George municipality confirmed on Tuesday that 61 construction workers had been retrieved from the site over the past week, 33 of whom died. In videos circulated by the local authorities, rescue workers can be seen drilling through the rubble searching for the remaining 19 workers. Rescue operations have continued since the five-storey apartment building collapsed on 6 May. Saturdays post about parapet wall collapse mentioned that the sidewalk is always in the collapse zone. Here's an illustration. Note the hydrant at the curb at right and the debris out to the yellow lines in the middle of the street. The point I was making is that if you are on the sidewalk, you can guarantee you are in the collapse zone. You don't have to do any calculations, you're too close! But being in the street may still leave you buried in red hot rubble also. The main point of that post was to explain the structural components of parapet walls over the show windows of stores which can cause parapet collapse from the heating of steel. Un- fortunately, Instagram limits posts to 2200 characters, which makes long explanations difficult. Collapse zones for most buildings should be AT LEAST 1-1/2 times the height of the wall. For a 10 ft. wall, you need to be at least 15 ft. back in order not to be buried. You may still be hit by bouncing bricks and other debris, but that should keep you from being buried. For a 20 ft. high wall, 30 ft. out, means you are running out of street. You may not be able to operate in front of some buildings on narrow streets. There are certain buildings that pose additional dangers, where even that 1-1/2 times the height of the wall will not keep you safe. Do you know what they are? Do your people know how to recognize them? How far back do you have to extend the collapse zone for these extra hazardous structures? What are your options for dealing with these extra hazardous structures if their collapse zone extends across the entire street? Here's a hint: you are looking at it! On May 7, 2024, a tragic incident occurred when a five-storey building under construction collapsed in the city of George, located in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The collapse resulted in the loss of two lives, and 53 people were left trapped in the mangled wreckage of the building. Authorities have been working tirelessly to rescue those trapped inside. Rescue efforts have been underway since the incident. Heavy lifting equipment and sniffer dogs have been deployed to assist in locating survivors within the debris1. (CNN) — At least six people have died and 48 so far unaccounted for after a multi-story building collapsed Monday afternoon in the South African city of George, officials said Tuesday. Rescue missions remain underway, and 26 people have been removed from the rubble since the building collapsed in the Western Cape province around 2 p.m. local time (8 a.m. ET) on Monday, George Municipality said in a statement.
