Omen issue 1 from Rebel Studios and Northstar Publications! This issue (first of 3) is a superhero title Tim Vigil and Paul Martin' Rebel Studios originally planned to put out as "Omega" but Marvel's lawyers quickly sent a cease and desist, they went for the Northstar name, too, protecting their Alpha Flight copywrite. Rebel Studios turns out to be not just a clever name! The storyline actually does resemble an update of the classic Captain Marvel origin and the design is a carbon copy of the Gene Colan Mar-Vell (but still c'mon calm the f down). Not what you'd immediately associate with the Faust guys! There is a back up featuring "Buzz Mason" a "Captain Stern" type strip by Mort Castle and Gary Amaro. QUINN 2023 23 x 31 cm oil on wood DM gallery for a catalogue of available works by gallery artist David Quinn David Quinn, born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1971, creates intimate, small-scale paintings influenced by a variety of elements including musical notation, minimalism, book design, signwriting, and the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. 'I went to art college to study design and photography but while I was there I kept lots of notebooks in which to put down ideas often with no goal or particular brief in mind. After a while, I realised that these were more interesting, to myself and others, than the more finished projects I produced, and so I figured, why not present them as objects/paintings, in their own right. I didn't set out to be an 'artist' but it seemed the most obvious route to take if I wanted to keep doing my own thing. I have made larger pieces as well, but I often return to the notebook scale as it allows me to try things out and it matters little if it doesn't work out. They are also something I can work on no matter where I am, and I like to travel light. I've had to work in small studio spaces at times and wouldn't always have been able to make larger work. Most of my favourite works of art are small. Pieces by Kurt Schwitters, Paul Klee, Agnes Martin, Charles Brady and Forrest Bess come to mind. I also love old Russian icons and miniature Persian paintings. Simonides I think said "painting is silent poetry" and I see these small pieces of mine as visual haikus. While on the power play, Lawson Crouse got the pass on the inside of the left circle and he snapped a shot in the net to the far side. Just 30 seconds later, the Sharks drew a penalty of their own. Coach David Quinn put Henry back on the ice on the power play. Henry took a hard shot from high in the slot that ended up in the net through some screen in front of the Arizona goalie and tied the game at 1. At 11:07 of the first period, Liam O'Brien took a shot on net. Mackenzie Blackwood made the save but the puck slowly trickled through the 5-hole and crossed the line. Half way past the 2nd period, Luke Kunin laid a huge hit on Travis Dermott on the back boards. He quickly made his way back to the front of the net where he got a perfect pass from Henry Thrun and he one-timed a wrist shot in the net and tied the game at 2. Collin Graf got his 1st NHL assist. Currently on display in the Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda, is the work of Seamus Quinn. Born in Dublin in 1947, Seamus is the father of David Quinn. He retired from work as a stores manager in 2010. In 2019 he started carving animal figures, out of wood, using a Stanley knife. ‘lucent’ is supported by an Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon Touring Award, initiated and developed by Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre @uillinnwestcorkarts and touring in 2024 to Highlanes Gallery Drogheda @highlanesgallery (10 February to 27 April) and to the Wexford Arts Centre @wexfordartscentre (15 June to 31 July).
