LEWIS CHESSMEN The Lewis Chessmen (or Uig Chessmen) are among the best loved archaeological treasures in Britain. Copies have long been popular among chess players, giant carvings dot the landscape throughout Lewis, but their global fame is in no small part due to being featured in a Harry Potter film! In 1831 Malcolm MacLeod was tending cattle on the rich farming land of Ardroil on the west coast of Lewis, when one of his animals wondered out onto the sands of Uig Bay. As he followed the cow onto the beach to retrieve it, Malcolm noticed a small stone chamber. In the chamber was a wooden box. In the box were 78 elaborately carved chess. The treasure Malcolm uncovered, carved from walrus ivory and whale teeth, may well have been in its hiding place for over 500 years, having been carved most likely in Trondheim in Norway sometime in the 12th century. The pieces were in pristine condition. Did they belong to a powerful Norse leader? Were they a merchant’s wares heading for markets in wealthy towns like Dublin? Certainly they were deliberately buried and the owner did not return. They lay hidden and safe until Malcom MacLeod found them. Every chessman is unique and intricately carved. There are 8 kings, 8 queen, 15 knights, 16 bishops and 12 warders and 19 pawns. Perhaps the most well known pieces are the 4 Berserkers, gnawing on their shields and working themselves into a frenzy before going into battle without armour. Chess was popular with the Vikings, looking for ways to pass the cold winter nights in their longhouses, focusing, as it does, on battle strategy which could save lives and lead to greater wealth and status. You can find folk with Hebridean ties in pretty much every corner of the world! Whether through choice or coercion, people at many points throughout history have left our island shores to seek a better life (some finding out that it was not so good after all). A mass emigration from the Outer Hebrides to Canada took place in the 1920's and saw hundreds of young folk leave from Lewis to Barra. It is no wonder we have such strong ties with North America. It is just over 100 years ago on 15th April 1923, the SS Marloch (the SS Metagama was to leave Stornoway the following week with 300 on board) left Lochboisdale with 500 islanders from Benbecula, South Uist, Eriskay and Barra, set for a new life in Canada. A monument was erected in the community gardens in Lochboisdale, South Uist to commemorate, reflect and acknowledge some of the harsher periods of our cultural history and remember all those that had little choice but to emigrate to Canada. WALK THIS WAY⬅🚶🚶 This short coastal circular route combines both sandy beaches and impressive sea cliffs. It also provides a good chance to spot whales, dolphins and basking sharks on calm days. Much of the walking is on short cropped turf above the cliff tops. day -1 - journey part II it’s already evening, the last evening before we take off on the hebridean way. and I’m tired, ready to go to bed but simultaneously thinking very hard about what I can write down to summarize today🤯 • what has been really remarkable is that little happened throughout the day but it felt like so much more. all the stimuli, the people around us, the chatter, the different sounds and smells, all of it added up on top of the exhaustion of the last weeks and the excitement of various impressions of the past days. funny enough it increased my craving for our impending hiking trip, the solitude that comes with it and the possibility to still my mind and give it a well deserved break • we slept in until 9am, having a lot of time in the morning due to the ferry we would be taking to the isle of barra departing only in the early afternoon. after having packed up we went for a walk around oban, had some coffee, tea and pastries at a local cafe and were still left with 2 hours to kill before the next part of our journey • the wait was unfortunately pretty unspectacular, aside from watching people constantly getting lost and turning up at the wrong ferry terminal • once on board we spent the next 5 hours, admiring the view, walking around deck, eating fish and chips, taking pictures, spotting dolphins (I’m apparently not only bear blind, but also dolphin blind, and did therefore only see one, everyone else around me was in comparison shrieking excitedly every other minute and pointing at something in the distance), scrolling through the internet and napping while impatiently waiting to arrive at our destination last • to conclude the last day of our extended journey in a deserving manner we ended up eating lots of delicious indian food and fighting against strong wind gusts during our postprandial stroll around castlebay😄 #hike #hiking #hikingadventures #adventure #life #journey #scotland #hebrides #barra #castlebay #ferryride #dolphins
🥃🥃WHISKY GALORE🥃🥃 In 1941, when the SS Politician, bound for the West Indies and America, was blown off course and came aground on the rocks in the Sound of Eriskay - the 260,000 bottles of whisky she was carrying became fair game to the island’s inhabitants. Islanders thought the rules of salvage applied. That anything lost to the sea could be legally seized. A local Customs man disagreed. People came from as far as the Isle of Lewis, battling the waves to ‘rescue’ the whisky, some dressed in their wives clothing to avoid incriminating oil marks getting on their own attire. It’s estimated that 24,000 bottles were either hidden, destroyed or drunk by the residents of the Outer Hebrides - good folk made weary by wartime rationing and scarcity. A second salvage mission was conducted, this time by the authorities. Villages and crofts were raided, with guilty parties being arrested, fined and, in some cases, even jailed. The SS Politician was then dynamited to prevent further looting - consigning any leftover liquid cargo to Davy Jones’s locker. As with any good whisky story, this story has legs. It’s a tale that’s inspired books, Hollywood films, plays and musicals. But there’s no substitute for hearing it first hand, especially in @ampolitician1 in Eriskay, with authentic memorabilia from the ship itself (recovered from the ocean floor in the 1980s).
