The Aston Martin V12 Vanquish from Die Another Day (2002) This was a bit of an emotional one for me (well they pretty much all were) but this one especially. This was the car for Pierce Brosnan’s final outing as James Bond in his fourth film Die Another Day in 2002 and it was the triumphant return of Aston Martin after his first three films were with BMW cars who paid to be in the films. We say the DB5 in his first two but it wasn’t his main car so it was more of a cameo appearance from Aston Martin. This was the most cutting edge car that Aston Martin had at the time and was the best possible choice to have as Bonds car. This was also around the time that I was getting into the series and I remember seeing the trailers for Die Another Day and the buildup to the premiere. I was nine years old so I couldn’t see it in the theater because it is PG-13 but I eventually got the DVD when it came out and watched it constantly. I instantly fell in love with the Vanquish when I first saw it. Those classic Aston Martin curves and lines while also being modern, the gadgets, the environment it is used in the film, it all captivated me. I know that Die Another Day isn’t well received by many fans but I can defend most of it and you can’t deny that the Vanquish is a great car and the chase is incredible. sure a frozen lake car chase was done once before in the 80’s but this brought a new twist on it. It is also heavily used in two James Bond video games for PS2 in 007: Nightfire (2002) (which also has a battle on a frozen lake) and Everything Or Nothing (2004) where it is prominently used for a good portion of the game. I not only was captivated by it on screen but also driving it in the games and really feeling like I’m in the world of 007. The Aston Martin V12 Vanquish is a car that I’m very emotionally attached to so I couldn’t help but feel a bit emotional and nostalgic when I got to see it in person. The Skidoo MX Z-Rev 800 snowmobile from Die Another Day (2002) This is the only vehicle you can touch and sit on in the Bond In Motion exhibit. This only has a small cameo in the film but snowmobiles are always fun. Bond first steals this from one of Graves’s guards after the infamous kite surfing scene 😖. He uses the parachute that he used to kite surf to choke and knock out the guard as he came . He then speeds away back to Graves’s ice palace to try and find Jynx, then the car chase with the Aston Martin ensues. I love snowmobiles and have driven them a few times and they’re so much fun to drive. The BMW Z8 from The World Is Not Enough (1999) This is one of my favorite cars in the whole James Bond series. Unfortunately it wasn’t given a proper chase sequence in the film but what we get is still a fun scene. This one doesn’t have many gadgets compared to the BMW 750iL in the previous film but it makes great use of what it does have. Bond can drive it remotely with his key fob, similar to the 750iL, and he puts the rockets to good use using a control pad in the center of the steering wheel. The Z8, or Zed 8 as it’s said in Europe/UK etc., was inspired by the 507 Roadster from the late 1950’s and was modernized for the early 2000’s. BMW only had a running test car for filming because the Z8 hadn’t gone into production yet until early 2000. They also had a shell body for the part where the saw blades cut the car in half lengthwise. Fun fact: that helicopter with saw blades was an idea originally for Goldeneye but never used so they recycled it for TWINE. We don’t get to see all of the gadgets that are mentioned in the Q scene except for the rockets that come out of the side air intake vents that shoot at the helicopter. The Z8 really shines in the James Bond video game Agent Under Fire (2001) and is filled with various gadgets. I was lucky to see a stock Z8 in the wild for the first time last year in my area and it was even the same color. These are a rare car too and they still hold their value at at least $200,000. I bet these are so fun to drive too? This also represents the end of an era in the Bond films because it’s when we first see the Z8 in Q’s workshop it is the final appearance of Desmond Llewelyn as Q. He passed away in a car accident after the film premiered in 1999 at 85 years old. I have so many memories of watching the film over and over again and driving it in the Agent Under Fire video game, the BMW Z8 is such a beautiful car and it will always be a personal favorite of mine. Q: “Your new BMW 750. All the usual refinements, machine guns, rockets and a GPS tracking system.” The BMW 750iL from Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) This is an interesting choice of car for Bond. It’s not the most glamorous but it suits his cover as a banker and this is what a banker would have driven in the late 1990’s. However, the gadgets are what make this car great. Q mentions it has machine guns but it actually doesn’t. With rockets in the sunroof, caltrops that drop from the rear bumper, self-inflating tires, a dual saw blade that come up from the BMW badge on the hood plus a then new GPS tracking system, this car will certainly reek havoc in any situation. This is hands down one of the greatest car chases in the whole series and one of my favorites. It has the great gadgets and causes so much destruction while also being fun and you can see on Pierce Brosnan’s face that he’s having a ball shooting this scene. Designed as the Reliant Rouge in the 1960's it was felt at the time that this tiny little wedge shaped three wheeler was not right for the Reliant brand. Following the acquisition of Bond Cars Ltd in 1969, Tom Karen of Ogle design restyled the car which utilised components from the Reliant Regal. This car came to be known as the Bond Bug which was produced between 1970 - 1974 and is one of the most iconic cars of the 1970's with its bright orange wedge shaped and three wheels. This particular example joined our local 'Drive it Day' event recently. 1) Glastron boat from the boat chase scene in the Louisiana Bayou in Live And Let Die (1973). One of a few boats they had while filming. This one probably didn’t do any of the bigger stunts (especially the jump) since it’s in pristine condition. 2) Parahawk from The World Is Not Enough (1999). This is a cool piece that I’ve always liked since I was a kid when I first saw TWINE in the early 2000’s. It is a snowmobile and paraglider hybrid with a tan engine on the back. Last Saturday I went on a mission we decided to call Operation: Capitol Royale. I had the opportunity to join some of my friends in the Bond fan community at the @spymuseum in Washington, DC to see the Bond In Motion exhibit. Bond In Motion is a traveling exhibit that has various cars, boats, motorcycles, submarines, etc from the James Bond films in its now 61 year history on display. This exhibit will be in DC for the year until April 2025. Right when you enter the lobby before entering the exhibit you can see the Aston Martin DB5 aim display with its battering rams sticking out of the front bumper. Its my favorite car of all time. There were a total of 17 vehicles on display from different eras of the series including ones driven by James Bond and some of the villain cars too. My personal highlights were the classic Aston Martin DB5, BMW 750iL from Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), the BMW Z8 from The World Is Not Enough (1999) and the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish from Die Another Day (2002). It was a fairly small room so they couldn’t fit every car from the series but the ones in there were the most memorable ones. There was even things like the Parahawk from TWINE and the Neptune submarine from For Your Eyes Only. All the cars were beautifully displayed and you could go right up to them and look inside. It was cool to see every single detail detail of each car and boat. This whole even was put on by my good friend Melanie from @birb.jamesbirb in lieu of Gatherall 5 which was supposed to be that weekend but was postponed. It was such a fun weekend and I got to live out my childhood dreams of seeing these vehicles up close in person. These are things I’ve spent most of my life watching on screen and to see them in person makes it more personal. The fact that I got to experience this with some of my closest friends made it all the more special and I even made some new ones when I was there. Thank you Mel for putting on this great weekend for us. CAPITAL ROYALE - 2024 Bond in Motion was a great experience with a solid presentation of the vehicles combined with small fact sheets and video clips. 10/10 recommend you take the time to go experience this for yourself. Many in the community seemed to agree that even with less cars than some of the other global BIM, this display was very well done and seemed just overall more comprehensive. “I’ve had a few optional extras installed.” •• • I absolutely adore “The Living Daylights” and a big part of it for me is Bond’s Aston Martin V8 Vantage. So I have painted the car to show off its stunning looks and many of the gadgets installed by Q Branch! These include the lasers from the wheel badge, the rockets at the front under the fog lamps, those iconic ski outriggers and even the HUD on the windscreen. It’s screen accurate and I have even has painted in Bond driving wearing the Bratislava leather jacket and sweater outfit!
