An interesting thing happened when I recently bought this XK. When arranging to view, the Berkshire based owner asked where I live. Herefordshire I said. “I lived in Hereford for almost thirty years” he replied. I met Tommy at his home and the XK was all I hoped for. I asked what he did for a living. “Security Consultant” When I had my chauffeur business most of my clients were Hereford based Security Consultants. We each tentatively pulled a little information from one another and found we had many mutual friends & acquaintances. But this is the bit I like……… When I was a kid my next door neighbour was in the SAS and was considered their top driver. He owned a succession of interesting, sporting, powerful motors - mk2 Jags, Triumph TRs, Trans Am, 3.0 Granadas, Rover Vitesse etc but the one relevant to this was a New Six BMW 3.0 E3 (Bavaria in some markets). Some of you may have heard of this car before as I’m always going on about it when an E3 is pictured. One morning I walked past the E3 as usual but it had been in a heavy accident. Soil and grass were in many of it’s crevices, the front of the car had an Elvis snarl, the wings dented and, further back, the whole car was twisted like a corkscrew. Neighbour John had had an off and somehow managed to drive the wrecked Beemer home. I mentioned this to Tommy. Tommy’s account of the incident: “John was a hell of a driver but a mad bugger. John was driving and in the front passenger seat was a guy called Johnny. John had been driving in his usual breakneck way late night in the sticks, lost it, gone through a hedge, down a ditch and, as he hit the bottom of the ditch, the car rolled over a couple of times and landed on it’s wheels.
