Unlike most of my peers, I did not grow up with a fervent love for Robi Thakur. In our household, the record player did not emit any রবীন্দ্রসংগীত mandatorily on weekends and neither did family get-togethers commence with recitals from the গীতাঞ্জলি. I did not spend sleepless nights trying to nurse a heartbreak while poring over শেষের কবিতা. And for the longest time, only knew of the English translations of চিত্ত যেথা ভয়শূন্য and বীরপুরুষ. The গল্পগুচ্ছ was far less sanctimonious and more unassuming, as it sat between the hefty volumes of Sarat Chandra and Sunil Gangopadhyay. And ২৫শে বৈশাখ was merely acknowledged with a television programme or a news item that happened to be aired on the day. When I went to Kolkata (the city where people literally worship Kobi Guru) for higher studies—I was somewhat slighted for not being well-versed enough. For not knowing stories that were common parlance. For not being able to tell one version of রবীন্দ্রসঙ্গীত from another. And although the covert snobbery did bother me a bit, I somehow never let it get to me. To this day, I have only read নষ্টনীড়, a handful of ছোটগল্প and a quarter of শেষের কবিতা. I hum vocables in quite a few songs because I still don’t know few of the words in them. And I would be hard pressed if I am asked to quote a favourite among the vast oeuvre of his writing and songs. But to me, there is no singular way to honour and revere someone’s work. For any artist, no matter how glorious or obscure their stature is, what ultimately matters is if someone somewhere can relate with what they articulated or how they went about it. What matters more than veneration is if someone stopped on their tracks when they heard a certain stanza from a song or read a certain passage in a play, and their life was never the same again. And to me, that is how Robi Thakur will remain—a stray tune that I suddenly find myself humming in the middle of the day Or a novella that I return to, abruptly, after years. #rabindrajayanti #25eboishakh #rabindranathtagore #banglagolpo #bengaliliterature #bengalibookstagrammer

Today is Rabindra Jayanti/ পঁচিশে বৈশাখ, 163rd birth anniversary of Kabiguru Rabindranath Thakur, the Bard of Bengal. And yes, it is a big deal for Bengalis. Feeding the stereotype, we do have at least one Rabi Thakur's portrait in our homes. It's all about remembering him and everything Rabindranath because he lives in our hearts through his art. I miss being part of the cultural programs we put up as kids on this day. He is the most influential and important Bengali writer of all time. He wrote the national anthem of India and Bangladesh and was the first Asian to win the Nobel prize. He was a great influence on Wilfred Owen, Boris Pasternak and was a close friend of W.B Yeats. If you are Bengali like me Tagore is simply ineluctable. Even after 83 years of his death he is the most widely read, alluded and adapted writer among Bengalis. I cannot really describe his influence in Bengali culture but Tagore is to Bengalis, what Dante is to Italians. I consider it a privilege of having been able to read him in the original. Tagore was a giant. And being a Bengali you're told so right from childhood. But for me this perspective gained strength as I got exposed to world literature, and started to compare him with other great poets and writers. Tagore wrote around 2500 songs including those in Geetanjali (Song Offerings). The songs are grouped in themes like love, prayer, nature, etc. These are wonders (when read in the original), and are unlike anything I have come across anywhere else. And he did won the Nobel Prize in literature, 1913 for the same. His poetic vision fuses spiritual mysticism with a profound love of the nature, connecting the surface of the world and the depths of the soul into a single expression of ecstatic joy and love for all things. 💛 But I am most fond of his short-stories though. His versatility is astounding. Plays, songs, poems, novels, music, art. There was no limit to his creativity.
