🐳Full Report – Whale Watching🐳 Thank you to Dana for capturing beautiful pictures of some adorable bottlenosed dolphins during our first trip of the season! On the 5-18-24 #whalewatching trip, we encountered multiple small pods of bottlenose dolphins. Observing them from the surface, we estimated at least 60 dolphins. During our journey, we also spotted ospreys, cormorants, common terns, and various gulls. The weather conditions were calm, allowing a peaceful day on the ocean. Additionally, we came across a balloon floating in the water, which prompted us to stop the boat so that a crew member could retrieve it. The female, larger than the male, can reach a length of about 15 meters. The term “humpback whale” comes from mega + pterus meaning “large fin,” in reference to the species’ characteristic of possessing long pectoral fins, which can exceed 4 meters in length. 📣Humpback whales emit very characteristic vocalizations: the “songs” are mainly used by males during the breeding season. But even today, the possible uses of humpback whales’ songs are being studied. They often make spectacular jumps, breaches, in which their bodies come almost completely out of the water, then fall heavily to the surface, creating a splashing effect much appreciated by whale watchers. 🌊They make extensive migrations between feeding and breeding areas, often crossing the open ocean. Oh man! I could make SO many bible-grams from the book of Jonah. This Old Testament book in the Bible is super short, but it is packed FULL. Maybe you've heard about the wild story about someone getting swallowed by a whale-- well, it comes from this book. Jonah is a friend in faith that we can certainly learn so much from. He carries big feelings and strong convictions. When God calls Jonah to a hard task, and one that Jonah didn't necessarily think was his responsibility-- Jonah runs. Flees. As far as he could physically go, in the opposite direction of where God called him to go and who he was supposed to minister to. Then he gets swallowed by a giant whale in the ocean. And then has to hang out in the belly of said whale for 3 days. Boy, that resonates with me BIG TIME! There have been seasons & situations and I want to tell God a big fat no, and forget that he even asked me to do something. When I'm swallowed up in my own emotions and expectations, I often can't understand or be open to what God wants me to do. But God is bigger. He has an eternal perspective. Something that seems hard + heart wrenching to handle-- He knows that calling us to do that said *task*, will grow us in our faith and partner with Him in His good purposes. Don't feel ashamed if you feel like you've ran from God's calling or nudging. Not one single bit. God's feelings for us don't slosh around like the waves of the sea. God's love and grace for us is steadfast and unchanging! If you have the time this week, I'm inviting you to crack open God's word and read both Jonah 1 and then mull over what Jonah does in chapter 2. It’s a hard feeling to describe, somewhere between euphoric and giddy. I was a junior lifeguard the first time I saw a whale breach, I must’ve been eleven or twelve. It was out on the horizon, fully leaping out of the water while the entire beach stood still to watch. This was long before the menhaden returned and humpback sightings became a daily occurrence. The second time was in 2018, it was the first summer I had a drone and right when marine life activity started to flourish. At that point I wasn’t able to get the drone up fast enough to capture any good footage. The third and only other time was this week, and I was definitely ready for it this time. Ever since I started filming marine life on the East End I’ve wanted to get this shot, I’ve wanted to reclaim that feeling of reverence and awe from when I was a kid at juniors. - On Long Island, most of the time when we watch humpbacks break the waters’ surface they’re lunge feeding, launching themselves horizontally or at an angle to engulf as much fish possible. Reaching speeds of 18mph to propel 90% of its body above the surface, whales need deeper water to breach than to feed. From my experience, seeing this from shore is incredibly rare as they’re usually far past the horizon where the ocean is boundless. ・・・ ORCAS - I went camping and in the morning, the atmosphere by the sea in the fjord was so idyllic. I sat there, sipping my coffee, and enjoyed the wonderful view over the mountains and the sea. Suddenly, orcas appeared in front of me. With calves, there must have been almost ten orcas in total. An unforgettable experience. When it comes to whales, communication takes on a whole new dimension. These magnificent creatures communicate through a variety of sounds, from haunting songs to clicks and whistles. Their intelligence is remarkable, demonstrated through complex social structures, problem-solving abilities, and even cultural behaviors passed down through generations. Whales exhibit a level of intelligence that continues to fascinate and inspire researchers and conservationists alike, reminding us of the depth and diversity of life in our oceans. This whale left his 2 friends he was traveling with to come check us out, swimming upside down then spy hopping to look at us. The largest animal to live or ever live on our planet goes down for a dive near Santa Rosa Island. The blue whale is such a magnificent animal, I am always in awe of their size and beauty. Sadly,, blue whales are listed as an endangered under the Endangered Species Act and are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
