So yesterday, this happened: I started a new habit some time ago of touching trees with my bare hands for at least one minute every day. At first, I would go into private, hidden spots to do this without anyone seeing me and thinking I was weird. But after a while, I realized this is probably one of the most beautiful things I will ever do, so began doing it in the open at the side of trails with no shame. Yesterday morning, I was holding the trunk of a massive old fir tree at the side of a trail with my eyes closed - feeling how big, strong, and stable it was - when a group of people walked past me. I remembered that this wasn’t something I was ashamed of anymore, and continued to do my thing as they strolled by me. When I felt like it was time, I opened my eyes, stepped back, & looked up at the towering tree. Then, an older man in that group of people said: “Did you feel the energy?” I thought for a second, smiled, and said: “Yeah. It was big.” He and his wife nodded their heads, smiled, and walked on. Four years ago, on April 5th 2020, I made my first #morningaltars nature art. Since then, I became a certified @morningaltars teacher in Day Schildkret’s inaugural teacher training. This practice combines nature, art, and ritual and is life changing. One thing I love about it is it reminds me to play… to awaken the inner child and create. Creating with nature fills my soul. It also helps me reflect on things that trigger me, that make me sad, angry… and things that make me happy. Maybe we don’t talk much about it because there really aren’t many words. Maybe that’s why the predominant sound of Saturday is silence. Cornel West says, “Black folks have been locked into that long Saturday after Good Friday. We ain't had Easter yet. All we have is each other, and the promise of Easter, the promise of freedom.” Saturday is the promise of resurrection without the reality. I don’t know what is more jarring: that these spectacles were turned into postcards or that they took place in the front yard of the church. There is an image that haunts me— a sea of white faces posing for a photograph. Smiling. Laughing. One man points his bony finger at the lynched bodies with an obvious look on his face that says This is what will happen to you, too. It pains me to say this, but I see myself in the man hanging on the right. He looks like he could be my relative. Maybe the other man does as well, but I can hardly tell given how disfigured he appears.
