Yesterday’s accomplishment: I got the first 20 outdoor tomatoes in the ground along with four tomatillos and six peppers. The part that took the longest was building the A-frame support structures for the tomatoes. I still need to string them to the A-frames and the pegs I have at the base of each plant. . Have you heard of “Lower and Lean” for trellising tomatoes? I hadn’t until this year! I found a blog post from the @bootstrapfarmer 's website talking about this system for growing tomatoes in hoop houses, after that… I checked several videos of home gardeners using this method in their backyards and I was sold! 🍅The Lower and Lean method is a technique for supporting tomato plants as they grow TALL. It involves guiding the plants along a string and progressively lowering them to maintain manageable heights. 🍅Here is a quick overview of the technique: 🌿Setting Up a frame: Install a strong, vertical support system. This could be strings, wires, or stakes that are securely anchored to the ground or overhead supports like wood or T-Posts. 🌿Using a Tomato Hook: (I got mine from Bootstrap Farmer) Attach a tomato hook to the top of the trellis. Tomato hooks are pre-wound with twine and make it easy to manage the vertical growth of the plant. As the tomato plants grow, tie them loosely to the trellis with plant clips, twine, or special tomato clips. Start tying when the plants are young to train them early. 🌿Pruning: Regularly prune the plants to maintain a single main stem. Remove suckers (side shoots) to direct energy into the main stem and fruit production. 🌿Leaning the Plants: Once the plant reaches the top of the trellis or gets too tall to manage, gently untie the plant or release the clips. Tilt or "lean" the plant slightly to one side. 🌿Lowering the Plants: Allow the plant to descend down the trellis, effectively lowering the height of the plant while keeping it supported. Re-tie or clip the plant at a lower height. 🌿Repositioning: As the plant grows, continue the lean and lower process. I’ve been crafting structures from fallen branches I gathered in the local woods 🪵 I was debating over popping to B&Q, but felt a real resistance this year to bringing more (generally imported) stuff to this piece of land. It turned out everything I needed was right here all along 🌞 ∘ I love how the allotment landscape shifts throughout the season, it’s like a temporary village that arrives from the earth and returns back to it as the seasons cycle forth 🪱 ∘ I’ll be growing marketmore cucumbers and cobra runners on the left cone trellis, sungold and moneymaker toms on the tunnel, and snap peas and sweet peas on the bamboo trellis 🥒🍅🫛 ∘ Now for all my seedlings to move into their new home 🥲🌱

Took advantage of the perfect weather to do more gardening than gunsmithing this weekend and made up some trellises! I like this tomato "cage" because they sprawl over the woven bamboo mat and then fruit hang down below for easy picking. Rounded out with a vertical cucumber trellis and some bamboo tripods (not pictured) for pole beans. The wood garden stakes and bamboo poles last about 3 seasons before really breaking down too much to be useful. Until that point these structures are very strong! Oh also harvested some new potatoes for German meal night. Assembling my tomato trellis. I’ve been using migardener’s method of furring strips for a few years. They work well until late August, I find at that point my tomatoes tend to reach the top and start flopping over, and eventually some supports will fall if they don’t die back by September. So this year instead of sinking them in the ground and leaving them freestanding, I’m attaching them to the sides of my raised beds and using additional furring strips as crossbars for extra support. Any plants that reach the top I can run along the crossbars so they don’t form massive cascades of foliage. The greenhouse not only protects our plants, but also our students when we have class on cool early spring mornings. Yesterday we learned about trimming tomato plants for greenhouse/high tunnel production. These tomatoes were seeded back at the beginning of January and they have been babies along the way. It’s a bit of a faith walk sending my students out to trim these plants after instruction on the how-to trim suckers… but they did an AWESOME JOB! 👏👏👏 there were no tomato plant fatalities. 🎉🙌 Note: tomatoes were trimmed and trellises with the #qlipr system, which was purchased from @farmersfriendllc @madisonacademytn #urbanfarm #educationalfarm #gardeningclass #tomatotrellis #tomatopruning

First attempt at driveshaft tunnel was a failure, 2nd attempt works great. My press break was missing the front ledge and it wouldnt bend this so I had to make a new front ledge and now it works flawless.
